Physx are real time particles that collide and actively respond interference.Physx can't catch the market cos Microsoft announced compute shaders. These are similar to CUDA wich runs Physx and probably Physx will die slowly and be replaced by Microsoft implementation but we know it was the first.Maybe they wouln't even thought of compute shaders if it was not for CUDA
Well, it's not that big difference - not in view of the fact, that turning PhysX on just KILLS your PC. I play on full detail but PhysX off - many FPS, full fluency. I turn on PhysX - LAGS!
@Bojak10 Your PC must be pretty shitty one. I have cheap system - Intel Dual-Core E5700 3ghz, MSI GT240 1gb GDDR5(PhysX capable) and with max settings at 1440x900 with physics on High i can play smoothly at 30fps. So your pc must be even worse.
Btw you can choose if your CPU of graphic card will have to process physics, so try both of them and compare it to each other, maybe your Cpu will do better than Gpu.
I Know that the Physx is designed for Nvidia cards, but, can i get the same results (physx on) with an ATI radeon HD 4600? Something i can do to get thos physx Effects? BTW my pc has a Phenom II X4 3.6, 2GB RAM, and the ATI HD4600 card. Thanx!!!!!
@shinji097 sorry to dissapoint you, but PhysX are Nvidia´s idea meant to run only with Nvidia graphic cards. There is something like Aegia PhysX, simulating this technology, but it isn´t working in games, i think. ATi cards just aren´t made for something like this.
Okay, I'm a total noob, but I'm trying to get a crazy powerful PC soon, so will I get those effects with an ATi Radeon HD 5970 CrossfireX Enabled Video card?
@TDUShelby Unfortunately not, Physx is locked to Nvidia cards only so you'll need an Nvidia card in your rig at least as a dedicated Physx card even if you use ATI cards for your actual display. I have 2 5870's in my rig in CrossFireX with a GTX 460 for dedicated Physx.
Okay, my noob-ness is showing. So, I can get two graphics cards in one computer? One an ATi and the other an Nvidia? Also, is the 460 the best, or is there a better one? I'm going for total overkill when I finally get a gaming PC.
@TDUShelby The best Nvidia card is currently the GTX 580. That would definitely be overkill for just Physx and there are issues with using it as a dedicated Physx card with ATi cards. To run ATI and Nvidia at the same time you'll need a patch. check your messages for the link of where to get it and the instructions on how to use it.
I ran the in-game benchmark with EVERYTHING of the game on max (including resolution, AA, Geometry, etc.) and with PhysX on High, and I got an average of 9 frames, I ran the EXACT same setting except with no PhysX and got an average of 26 frames. And the funny thing is that there is literally no difference between turning PhysX on or off. Specs: Core2 Duo 2.93 GHz, GTS 250 1 GB, 4GB RAM, 1920x1080 res.
@MrGreekdog Yeah! Mafia II's physics are JUST like PhysX. Plus, PhysX lags when it's used a lot of times at the same time (and I have a very powerful PC) :(
I've got Q9400 / HD4870 (XFX/512MB) / 3GB Ram, and when I pull settings to max without PhysX I get fairly 70FPS~ at 1680 x 1050.. And with PhysX, Around 25-35.. o.O
when i change my settings of batman physx to normal! i get a framerate of about 5 fps, and without physx everything on or v high, i get 60 fps. WHy the hell such a big difference?
@Lawdrun Yes, Vito's clothing is physically simulated with APEX Off settings, but with APEX Med/High it's more detailed (5-7x times more vertices) plus clothing sim is applied to some NPCs too.
@Zogrim Just wondering what settings you use. I play Mafia 2 on a Phenom x4 9750 2.4 Ghz and GTX 480 with settings maxed out. 1920 x 1080, I only get avg of 17 FPS. It really lags.
i can max it out with phenom x810 overcloked to 3.1ghz, his 5850, 4gb ram.. i just got my His 5850 and so far it can run every game on very high my res is just 1400x900
I dont really need PhysX, its eating up my framerate for an effect which is barely visible when playing most of the missions. Also, having this only available for specific graphic cards its a shame some people cant try this out. (They could like it!)
now if they did that with physics and stuff, it could probably turn out with some cool effects. Killzone 2 on PS3 renders 720p, however alot of the particle effects and physics are rendered in a slightly lower resolution but it doesn't matter because visually it looks amazing, without even a loss of frame rate, very clever tenchniques.
Wanna know what's retarded? Tiny little graphical things like falling pebbles and added debree to destruction seems to take alot more power to run. What people should do is make these little effects in low rez and stream a bunch of low rez shit together so they can fit more destruction. If you look at the halo series, the textures were really detailed on everything but it seemed they were a bazillion low rez textures streaming away to make seeminfly gorgeous close up visuals
@JoJoRockets52 Dude! I LOVE the 955. I have it as well and overclocked it on stock cooler to 3.6 ghz and it still keeps at low temps. I've never loved a processor as much as the phenom 955.

NVIDIA PhysX is way, way better than anything Radeon--exponentially. Of course it's coded to their GPU--it has to be. Otherwise you get the effects from Radeon, which are unplayable on a card that costs $100-200 more! Or, you can get no effects, which is boring. GeForce just makes it more entertainting. Period.
@paulb4uk nope , the 5870 is a great card but if you run with physics on high itll offload to the cpu and to my knowledge there aint really any processors that can handle the physx on high very well. Even my i7 2600k Clocked at 4.8Ghz cant pull phyx at good fps.
@randysailer You can enable the effects in Mafia 2 even if you have an AMD card, but fps drops dramatically causing the game to be almost unplayable, or enjoyable. It is best(performance wise) to have a dedicated nvidia gpu for PhysX in addition to another main card.
@FALLENFORFISH its not bullshit its just that consoles at the moment dont have this technology builty into it so when you get pc ports of console games like this one they always have the switch to turn on physx on or not batman and mirrors edge did it as well
im assuming when consoles catch up then it will be different
@Flaringo The only shame about PC, is not enough PC ONLY games out there, so we hardly ever get to see what a "enthusiast" PC can do. Metro and Crysis look amazing on maximum, but there are fewer games like those these days. Starcraft II is pretty impressive as well. I just wish their were more Strictly PC games out there to play. My GTX 460 would appreciate it.
@FALLENFORFISH No it's not bullshit. The consoles, which have been outdated for years does not have the computational ability for things like this unlike a modern PC. Plus consoles are fixed. PCs can be upgraded when ever you want so they stay ahead.
@TroutButter AMD 5970 IS faster than all nvidia has to offer in a single card. The GTX 480 beats the AMD 5870 in most cases, but costs more and runs hotter. You are both Fan Boys looking ignorant.
@TroutButter well considering its a 'made for nvidia' game you would hope so.. But the demo has been suffering major FPS drops in the game with phys-x enabled (tho there has been a fix) although the nvidia reports higher frames on average, observations have been made where the nvidia looks jerkier but still gives off higher FPS overall, wouldnt surprise me if the game is coded to give nvidia higher scores. Nvidia suck, compare overall a 5870 vs GTX480 price for performance.. 5870 wins by far :)
I used to use nvidia geforce card,s but my last one only lasted 2 years and seven months so i made the switch to an ati 5870 so glad i did its a much better card .
@uzi500 That is because Nvidia locked PhysX so it wont run or run really bad when run on Ati. You cant even use an Ati card for graphics and a Gforce for PhysX, becasue the drivers won't let you. But someone already unlocked it, and there are modifications for the drivers so you can use a Gforce as a secondary / PhysX card.
And it kinda proves that performance is locked too, because i get those 30-25 fps with PhysX enabled too, with only one 5870.
Impressive. When the screen is just 1 scene divided to 2 pieces, I suppose that both APEX and NO APEX show the same things, right? Otherwise, APEX shows a lot more small stones. On the other hand, they're mostly stones at useless places, so one must also praise the NO APEX algorithms that they know where to focus - there are still small pieces of debris in NO APEX wherever it matters. ;-)
@Zogrim u dont need a new processor just a good overclocker board. for quadcore cpu... liku Gigabyte EP45 UD3R or P boards... U can OC, your cpu to 4-4.5GHZ:)
@MajinMinh Actually, the high-end processors are not that much faster than this processor. Yes, they are somewhat faster, but if you crank up the graphics the GPU is going to be the problem, not the CPU. This processor is fine for pretty much every games. There are a few exceptions, but those games are written/ported so badly that even new processors can only do so much.
or... you just need a dedicated card for physx. you can get any cheap geforce 8xxx card to do the job and just overclock it. i've even accomplished a physx setup while i had an ati card as my primary. i agree, the effects aren't that impressive but my point is you don't need anything that expensive
@wildwolves8 Physx went down hill since nvidia bought it. They aren't a good enough company to take it somewhere, it should have been big by now. Sticking on on their bulky slow gpus made it inefficient so its now just a fraction faster than it was in the old PPU days.
The Only difference i can see is more particles on the left side of video.

physx is actually the name for 2 things:

turning physx off in mafia 2 makes the clothing still physics based, but less, and many of the things like sparks and rocks are taken out.

@MajinMinh
wtf i have a q6600 and am also planning to get a gtx 470
and you are saying that q9400 is a bottleneck ?
rastamees 1 year ago
@MajinMinh Actually, the high-end processors are not that much faster than this processor. Yes, they are somewhat faster, but if you crank up the graphics the GPU is going to be the problem, not the CPU. This processor is fine for pretty much every games. There are a few exceptions, but those games are written/ported so badly that even new processors can only do so much.

The first mafia game was great, I've got a feeling that this one's gonna be a blast... (I think I made a PhysX pun)!

i'm not impress by that thing,it's just a pain in the ass. If u don't have a rocket computer.

@wildwolves8
or... you just need a dedicated card for physx. you can get any cheap geforce 8xxx card to do the job and just overclock it. i've even accomplished a physx setup while i had an ati card as my primary. i agree, the effects aren't that impressive but my point is you don't need anything that expensive
schmidtbag 1 year ago
@wildwolves8 Physx went down hill since nvidia bought it. They aren't a good enough company to take it somewhere, it should have been big by now. Sticking on on their bulky slow gpus made it inefficient so its now just a fraction faster than it was in the old PPU days.
