  • she is winner ......normal .. c'est la meilleur ...the best singer .....

  • This is terrific . I worked with a group that appeared on this same show the mariners from Louisville KY . By some chance is there a clip of them that exists on this show .

  • That was incredible! The host was a weiner but the name "Dick" might have been used because back in 68 "Richard" wouldn't have sounded as hip .Funny, today they would have stuck with Richard.Do ya notice Karen dosen't have the range in her voice that she developed later.Good posting, thanks!

  • I love you Karen, she looks so pretty here and like her voice so much...

  • 'She decided to play with DICK?? What an arse, but Richard & Karen are great...

    and the other guy too!

  • What's up with the DICK!!! His name is Richard DICKHEAD! Great video, thanks!

  • A ver quién puede poner un buen sonido a este vídeo. El solo del bajo y del piano son muy buenos par que se escuchen tan mal. Un saludo

  • Best female drummer by a country mile. Jazzy version of a disco song.

  • I counted him saying DICK 38 times!! :-) heheee

  • What a drum solo. I wonder what role Karen Carpenter played in the creation of Drum and Bass today. Were she alive today, it would be interesting to get her take on electronica as a whole.

  • hmm. i wonder what drummer influenced the most?

  • @oranger2525 Definitely Roy Haynes, Gene Krupa and Bernard Purdie.

  • Putting their own spin on a song .. that was their big strength

Much more that Richard could have done on keyboard too..

  • I love Carpenters, but to be fair, they weren't really Rock & Roll, so I don't know if they should be in the Hall of Fame.

  • @theredreceivers well maybe they could just make a music hall of fame lol

  • @brickmaster24 lol i'm all for that.

  • @theredreceivers Neither was ABBA, and they're in.

  • WOW!!! Good job to everyone, but especially to Karen!!

  • that may be poor sound quality

but it's so much cooler than the version (the studio-version?) that i know all the time before

  • What an incredible gift to see them this young, they sounded so great. I like the bass player.

  • She was some kind of drummer karen carpenter.

    Love her .

  • thanks for posting :) Karen is really GREAT in singing and playing the drums :)

  • from Cal State, Northridge ^^

  • Thank you very much for uploading this, in its entirety.

  • Kind of ironic, that for up until a couple of weeks ago, all the "presenters"/winners except Dennis James (host) were alive in 2010 except Karen. Obviously we just lost Art Linkletter. To quote Johnny Cash/9 inch nails, "everyone goes away in the end".

  • I'm just getting to know them... Karen was a grrreat drummer in her own right!!

  • dick and karen get down with their funky selves!

  • very funky sound

  • Californians? Yes. But they're originally from New Haven, CT....and will forever be Nutmeggers.

  • She9They) will always be a winner/s for me!

  • Karen Spirit !!

  • VHS!! Yeahh!!

    love Karen!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. This is the first time I've had the chance to hear Karen play the drums!

  • karen se be linda

  • Coolz! ALL three are shreddin!!

  • america has the misconception that just because this woman and her brother made money at writing and performing pop songs, then they were fluff-- but as this video proves, they were serious, talented musicians even in their teen years. more people should realize this about karen now that she is gone.

  • "By mid 1968 Spectrum had disbanded, but Richard and Karen had now set their sights even higher. On June the 22nd and 28th of 1968 Karen, Richard and a bass player appeared as Dick Carpenter Trio on 'Your All American College Show', where they performed "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Dancing In The Street".

    From leadsister. com

  • Bravo! LOVE

  • Karen was amazing! This is not really a right song for her voice but she was only 16, for God's sake! Can you imagine what a find she's be today? Nobody would be able to stop praising her.

  • "You will also find out she has a lovely voice." Perhaps the most understated, but universally proven statement of the century!!

  • hahahahahhaha

yeah the Ultimate Kc tribute i said

  • Karen Carpenter was only 16 in this clip. This was in '66 not in '68.

  • behold the premature makings of jungle/drum n base

  • COMING SOON

  • wish there was a full version in better quality!

The muse is hanging around them while they're playing there. *wipes sweat an sighs*

  • They were always great!!

  • karen carpeter could play drums, and she she reminds me of a bass player named Rachel Haden.

  • I wish they would have recorded that song in the studio. It sounds amazing.

  • jee Christ listen to karen go. who'd think think that a broad could play like Buddy Rich? most "modern" drummers couldn't touch this style of playing

  • Strange arrangement. Would be almost impossible to dance to.

  • @friendlier not to honkies

  • It's funny that a rock 'n roll show in the 60's was sponsoed by Baggies. "All purpose plastic bags".

    Hmmm.

  • Lord have mercy... Dick Carpenter was a HUGE talent. Listen to him play!

  • In the piano solo at the middle of the song Dick Carpenter played "The Shadow of Your Smile".

    Very Funny!!!

  • woah... she can play drums... she's very talented!!!!

  • This song was composed by The Mamas and The Papas, isn't?

  • No it was originally composed by Martha and the Vandellas, the drums are banging

  • This song was composed by Marvin Gaye and played first by Martha and the Vandellas

  • Who knew that Karen could play the drums? WOW! She's awesome. CARPENTER'S FOREVER!

  • every real carpenter fan knew that Karen was a drummer before to be a singer...

in fact, many people think that the real problems of Karen began when she let the drums to just sing. The drums were the wall between Karen and the critics

  • Well, I never knew that, and I'm a big fan of The Carpenters!

  • I guess almost everyone who like The Carpenters knows that Karen was a drummer too.

  • I didn't know that, though. I'm only 18, so I haven't seen a lot of footage of them. I've only heard their songs. I've seen some videos, but I usually only listen to the songs.

  • wow!! a thousand dollar check!!!!

  • Karen is awesome

  • they tore it up...karen got funky as hell @ 2:53!!

  • classic classic

  • absolutely amazing!

  • I used to love her. I had forgotten how talented they are!

  • I want to make it to mp3.

    but..this version not good quality.

If have good quality version that perfect.

    Karen's sing live very good.

so I very like her song is live version.

  • this should have a lot more views

  • lmfao that guy is dumb he called richard dick lmfao! you can see Karen laugh

  • Um, that was the name of the trio.

  • also Dick is a nickname for Richard, so they were probably trying to sound more hip since I remember in another documentary, just before coming to this spot, they were using the name Richard Carpenter Trio.

  • I cant even believe that the bass player is someone who once ever existed

  • d n b :))))

  • J M . C . M 7086T TE AMO KAREN CARPENTER

  • Thanks for the video. She was really pretty at that weight. I guess I always pictured her as the ultra thin Karen that unfortunately killed her.

  • Why the Dick Carpenter Trio? I thought his name was Richard Carpenter

  • Dude, you are not one of those youngsters who doesn't know that Bill is short for William or Bob is short for Robert or Dick is short for Richard (though not as commonly used as back then)? Are you?

  • Yeah I am......but now I know.....thanks:)

  • No problem. Just glad I could help...and sorry if I sounded like a cranky old person.

  • I wish I could play the drums like her!

  • All the talent is already in place. They just needed their own sound, which they soonafter found.

  • they're the best!!! :)

  • This is Steven McLachlans new single "Winner takes it all/Show me heaven" with Every penny of the profit going to BEAT the charity for eating disorder. on channel: stevenmclachlan .

  • talk about old fashoned presentation...lol

  • I kinda like all the flowers n stuff in the background. But anything older than the 60s is just too old for me.

  • I love you carpenters.. karen rest in peace forever...

  • Karen: what an amazing natural talent. Even though the quality is bad, it's still really cool. Thanks for posting.

  • I don't like it (maybe it's the sound quality, but probably that the Vandellas' version is so iconic). But gotta love the Carpenters for trying.

  • Thank you for posting this, I've been waiting YEARS to see this in it's complete form!

  • she loves to play along with dick "-_-

  • Is that suppose to be funny? Har har.

  • wtf is with the thumbs down on my comment.

thats what he said, at about 00:39 he says "she decided to play along with dick"

  • lol, I thought it was funny... I actually gave it a thumbs up a few days ago to try and even out the negatives.

  • :D thanks

  • Thank you so Very much for this!

  • Thank You for this video. I never realized that Karen was such a good drummer!

  • Karen loved to play drums and in one special that was aired she got back to it. The decision was made because she had a voice to get her out from behind the drums and into the center spotlight. You can't argue with that decision. She was not only very pretty but had a pitch perfect voice that you love to listen to.

  • For everyone's information this aired on

    June 22,1968.

  • thanks.

and what i love about this performance is they just went out and did it their way.

    and of course, they won.

  • This was almost 2 years after they won the Hollywood Bowl "Battle of the Bands" contest in 1966. But it was indeed their first ever TV appearance. It was taped in June, 1968. The week after RFK was assassinated in the same city (Los Angeles), in case anyone wants to put it in historical context of the times.

  • My god! She was also a wonderfull drummer!! I never knew about this. Thanks for the video!

  • he says "she's a fine singer too"

  • wow! was this the first time they were on tv?

Is this before or after they won the Battle of the bands" at the Hollywood Bowl?

    Ohhhhh...someone please tell me!!!

  • Check her out on those drums! Wow. A multi-talented star of her time, or any time.

  • did not know the TRUE GRIT anecdote; it probably worked out for the best, in case Karen had a barney with Glen Campbell about who'd sing the title song - he might have got a guitar finger bitten off

  • we have 2 sing this song 4 choir but its in a way more better version then this. its a duet

  • UH,,,,,,,,,,what was THAT all about?

  • Just shows what talent Karen possessed at such at an early age, playing drums and singing at the same time which is not an easy thing to do. Great footage BTW.

  • can anyone tell me how to get a cd containing all of the carpenters songs? PLS???? how and wer do i get the cd?

  • Really promising jazz musicianship displayed here. Might be the quality, but it sounds as though Karen had not matured vocally, but listen to Richard play the piano! And even at 18 she is very good on the drums. Not just her solo.. listen to her backing of the bass solo. The unknown Bassist "Bill Sissyoev" is also excellent.

  • This copy destroyed her voice quality. Go to the link provided by the person who posted the video as listed in his description. The voice is excellent there.

  • i have to agree jp. and he'd fit right in to any band nowdays, the name the clothes, everything.

  • That bass fackin' rules!

  • its very hard to play drums and sing at the same time . what a star

  • Fresca, juvenil y siempre linda luce Karen, cuando apenas tenía 18 años.

  • This is not my favourite... I think the video made it bad.

  • lily white buster brown and scarecrow....do not even try it haha

  • THis really "YEAH, WOW!!!!"

  • maestraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    genial!

y mis aplusos para el pianista!

    que es de el????

karen desde donde estes siempre tus canciones viviran!

  • W00000W SHE is really awesome!!! Btw, they wrote this song? or Vandellas?!

  • Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Martha is currently a city coucilwoman of Detroit.

  • Her vocal technique was not refined by that time, but the drumming was 11 outta 10!!!

  • mad drumming chops

  • oh my god! she should have stuck to DRUMS while singing. unbelievable talent -

  • i always knew she could play the drums but that was some serious playing! :)

  • Why is the video so bad? Did it go bad over time, or was it never any good.

  • go Karen go bad ass

  • karen! <3

  • Thanks for posting this. It's great to get to see the entire performance. Notice how they each took a turn to show what they could do.

  • That was WACK! They has some great jazz chops and you'd never really know it from their hits. That keys solo was rippin' and she tore it up on those drums at the end.

  • What a talent. She is missed!

  • They are really hot. I would love to have heard more songs with this upbeat style. May have had twice as many hits.

  • It's just amazing to see Karen having so much fun singing and playing the drums. It's just amazing.

  • wow, didnt know that karen was also a drummer !! WOW !!!

its very difficult drumming while sinsging, i think she is great !

  • Of course she was a drummer, and a great one!! I recommend you to watch the movie "the story of Karen Carpenters" there you will see all her childhood and how she became a musician.

    Greatings from Argentina!!

  • Dick is smoking!!!!

  • She was.... She Certainly was!

  • Wasn't Karen voted Best Rock Drummer of 1975 in a Playboy poll?

  • I doubt that! Keith Moon was still alive at the time.

  • Sorry Rusty, it's true and Keith was still alive...and so were Ginger Baker, Jon Bonham and a bunch of other great studio drummers too, but the fact is she was a great drummer as well, could play a number of styles and was a great snare player. Look it up, but consider the poll too.

  • I'm amazed at her drumming, too. I'm guilty of underestimating her talent. Also surprised she was playing drums in a dress

  • I'm truly amazed by Karen's drum skills! The song has a fast tempo and yet she played it so brilliantly. I'm overwhelmed by her talent!

  • Such precision- great post!

  • karen look so cute in that video!!

  • This was absolutely awesome! I never 'knew'!!!!! THANK you SOOO much! I found this while viewing Martha Reeves and The Vandellas! Wonderful!

    C.J.

  • lol, caroline just decided to play with dick

  • She was probably just 18 when this was filmed! Fantastic.

  • Wow, she could have been in Mahavishnu Orchestra or something.

  • Awesome post. I'm so glad to see the entire performance. The solo sections were great. And there was something surreal about hearing Dennis James say about Karen, "Incidently, she's a fine singer too; you're gonna find out."

BTW, I'm a big fan of the Carpenters AND Rush. Can't we all get along?

  • She kicked so much ass... unreal, thanks!

  • I'm so glad to see someone trash Neil, i think Rush is one of the worst bands ever, as well as, most pretentious. I obviously have good taste because i love the Carpenters

  • What a GEM! I was only 5 or 6 when this aired. Is it me or did she become sad as the years went by? I think I have some of the problems she had without her great talent.

    Jim H.

  • are you anorexic?

  • YES

  • DAMN, KAREN! YOU ROCK!!!! She's better then Neil Peart!

  • Oh come on!

  • Look, Karen was not even a large girl. It is sad how the press made her feel so bad about herself all of those years.

  • karen sounded realy good and the bass player did too rich over alittle played a bit thou

  • I love you Karen. You will always be my number one girl.

  • she was fine there, but then she wanted to be thin

  • This is a great tune that sounds great with Karen's voice and her passion that she puts into it. Good stuff.

  • how funky is that!

    love ya karen!

  • arent those old Baldwin amplifiers??... my neighbor had one ... heavy as lead...

  • Crap before greatness.

  • Better than Bonham too!

  • "indidentally she's a fine singer too" cracks me up.

the world would find out soon after this.

  • Wow...I've never seen this before, but I've heard about it. Karen, we miss you. You know, Richard, if you happen to ever check yourself out on here. A re-release of Karen's best twelve would be awesome!

  • This video is really straight from a wild dream. Captain Kirk and Zsa Zsa presenting an awar
