I Can do Lessons in Love but not by slapping

  • Excellent slapping!!!! Now practice some more on the non-slapping part and you're Mark-2 (or should I say: Mark too ;-)

  • 9/10 in my books, so awesome that you got pretty much the EXACT sound as mark king, very impressed

  • Yeowch !!! BIG UP GAZ.

Excellent stuff, and tasty improvisations to boot. 9.9 out of 10

(Loose .1 for not actually being Mark King, sorry.)

  • "great. Now play AND sing at the same time like Mark"

    You first.

  • No? Didn't think so...

    BTW gdenyer, great stuff! :)

  • OK. I will do that for you sometime. The jaw grinding is a subconscious idiosyncracy.

  • @gdenyer sick cover in my opinion what the fuck is this guys problem right?

  • hahahahahahha

  • @Stanseng why can you play and sing this song???

  • @Stanseng lets see you play this without singing... asshole

  • @Stanseng Actually fun fact Mark King never sang and played live... he only sang most of his bass tracks were prerecorded and he just did the solos. and very good job man.

  • @MrTatebass Rubbish Mark King sings brilliantly live and plays amazing bass at the same time

  • hey, you shouldn't scratch your head while playin..hehe :-) excellent job, really!

  • hahahahahaha

  • very nice

  • good job dude

  • Great playing, I just ordered my very own Jaydee!

  • dude u r the FUNK!!

  • love games....if it dont move you...your dead!!

    on the money bud,respect!!!

  • Fucking Brilliant!!!!

  • great slap. but wot happened to the finger playing? bit clicky all round. still great though. and well in time. like ur jaydee.

  • I agree. It's really amazing and on the beat and all but sounds like the action is too low and the strings are buzzing against the frets or something. Is that part of slap?

  • Hi benjamin, im Tom. In a way very low action and a little fret buzz are part of the classic slap sound, as are very light gauge strings since advanced slap techniques like triplets are very difficult to play with high action heavies, but you do have a point that this is very very buzzy which i think is partly to do with the recording quality. Sorry the reply is so late on, hope that helped at least a little, Tom xx

  • Great show dude! You have THAT groove! Need a drummer?

  • you the man !!

  • you are the bass!!!

  • i like you collection of bass guitars behing you :P

  • i was born in 70s and grew up in 80s yeah i love Level42 ever since they made a big break in 80s. i share the same music taste with you bro. i dont have any music background but i know all about King's style. you got it absolutely spot on right down to the finest point. you are truelly awsome.

  • slapping in E is simply advantageous due to being able to utilize the open E string as a fundamental note. I'm sure MK, as TCW says, can slap in another key, just not necessarily using that open note.

  • just out of interest, is your name in context with "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)" by parliament/funkadelic? i know its random but i was listening to it at the time and it made me think. Thanks xxx

  • i never understood why mark king was supposed to be so awesome because he can slap in E?

  • Umm i think you will find he slaps in many keys.

  • al, he's doing exactly what mark does, use of the pinky where classically the ring finger should be utilized. i play king's lines the same way. it's not right or wrong, it just is what it is. both wooten and king are masters and have their own unique styles.

  • Wow, amazing- I like your twists on each song, Gary, it shows so much extra flare on top of an already difficult song.... I especially like the very subtle head scratch at 2:02. Do you have the tabs for the fingerstyle part?

  • Amazing...lovely sounding bass

  • Mate you're awesome.

I'm seeing them tonight in Bristol.

  • top notch playin....i like your style

  • Nice playing there Gary, I especially like the bit in where I can see you singing the first line of the song"As I watch your face" lol.

  • LOL! I can sing and play most songs... but the cats dont like it!!!!

  • You've got some really killer licks there, gdenyer...I'm thinking of trying out the bass for the very first time...got any recommedations for a good brand of bass for novices like me?

  • It really depends on your budget. Let me know how much you want to spend and I'll tell you what you can get for the money.

  • if you dont mind ive been looking at your hands to see how its done. Incredible mate.

Thats a jaydee innit one of MK's, i see a Status on the wall behind too.

  • Yes, It's a JayDee Supernatural Classic Series I. It is a Status on the wall (a Washburn), but with re-fitted Status Empathy electronics.

  • if level 42 need a stand in bass replacement then ur the man u rock dude !

  • Wow, nice job, fella...I dig your style

  • Try this: when you play notes with your left hand, never use your fourth finger unless the note is 4 frets up from your index finger(one finger per fret)

Also, always have your fingers(left hand)no more than a few mm above the string(economy of movement)especially just after you have played the note. It will help a lot. These are classical guitarist tricks that work great on bass. Checkout Victor Wooten.

  • i think getting some mechanical movement into the playing with the fingers helps to add to the sound.

  • he's doing exactly what mark does, finger placement is almost identical, use of the pinky where classically the ring finger should be used. mark isn't a classically trained player either, you know. it's not right or wrong, it is what it is, and if it feels comfortable and accomplishes the task, there's nothing wrong with it.

both wooten and king are masters, but they each have their own style.

  • Good work but try Havona on Weather Reports heavy Weather album. The bass line by Jaco Pastorius is in a different league and very few bassists can pull it off. It's fun trying though.

    Keep it up.

  • I am a level 42 fan for years and I just want to tell you that the way you play your bass is really good. One of the best I have ever seen.

  • ace one of the best bass tracks of all time and you played it stunningly well done dude.

  • WHAT A SONG!
