piss me off.. I grew up here. this is the song of my home town. I'm over 50, mixed culture, my child born in the same tract house mixed race, most of my friends non white/non anglo. this video makes it look like all were white, with BIG houses and had swimming pools??!! NOT it wasn't fun it was shit. the only thing you wanted to do was get away. away was anywhere with some sunshine! either that or get pregnant or dead. as many I loved did. Daly City. the Daly slaughterhouse sat behind my school
@virgopiglet The song isn't meant to make it look like fun. It's meant to make it look like a monotonous hellhole... and no, not all the people are white in Suburbia. I lived there, too. There's one black family, one asian family, and one latino family... and the thousands of white families use these families as justification to call themselves culturally diverse.
@Marcownz747 I love how you attempt to generalize the ratio of ethnic minorities in suburbia, with your only justification of these claims being that "I lived there, too"
My teacher let us listen to this song in like 6th or 7th grade (along with puff the magic dragon & Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds) I always felt like it was so nerdy and lame. But now I freakin' love it. :)
I like it when people come here, listen to this song and then get all defensive about the suburbs. Fun! If you like it there that's fine. I think it looks like shit. So does Pete.
Lol Well first of all this song started during suburbanization in the 1950's after the great depression. The G.I. Bill allowed extra housing loans which were cheap, BUT they had to build a new house. This fueled the economy... problem housing segregation, houses all the same, people had to follow rules made them all the same, keeping up with the "jones's"... Interesting in some ways its the same nowday but maybe not?.. university isn't negative though but required to go? certainly not..
Well all you guys are mean! If you don't like the song don't listen to it or comment! I thinks a funny song and actually has meaning maybe you should do YOUR research and stop hating cause your gonna be a mean old person one day and no one will love you cause your an ass!
Thought of this while noticing the ugly plywood boxes between San Jose and San Francisco a while back; later I learned that it was written about Daley City, which is right in that area. Now, there are hipsters who crave those unpretentious "Twilight Zone" era houses. Reynolds couldn't have anticipated the stupid, vinyl-drenched mcmansion-wannabe tracts built today. Or some of brick-fronted "upscale homes" around Boston with quoin stones adjoining a generic siding clad wood wall. Sad.
Tacky little boxes. Something wrong with the way we live. So you see the extremely tacky way we live! Social engineers should go back to school and learn about beauty and philosophy. Oh our schools are idiot boxes too. We need another tsunami to wipe out this shit!
Some of the "little boxes" shown here are pretty darn big and unique. I think I'd take one of those over the tiny ranch I live in right now. I've always thought this song was about the cookie-cutter ranch-style houses that were built in the 50s, about 3 feet apart with hundreds crammed into one subdivision. Even so: think about 3rd world slums like Rio or Sao Paulo, those people would die to live in one of the U.S. "little boxes". A matter of perspective.
Yea it was good on weeds, that show is a whole different show now. After watching everything up to season 7 i just saw the pilot episode today. They fucked up the show pretty bad after the fire.
I love this!!! Wish that Weeds would go back to singing the theme song b4 show starts! Ne who, did ne one happen to c the E for entertainment on the pink house? Funny. It's upstairs on the left window. Hah hah
@Swede7777 i think its just an expression to show how everyone does the same thing and come out the the same way. just like a cycle with their children and their children.
Nowadays this song ought to be further updated. Not only are we content to put ourselves into neat little boxes tha all look just the same, we like to shut ourselves up in those boxes and isolate ourselves from the world.
Except on the internet where we are quite happy to talk to complete strangers we've never met (admittedly like I'm doing here), and never even get to know our neighbours.
@yeahduden How is this sad? How is it depressing? People take non-conformism too far. Now having a fairly successful career and owning a house is too mainstream for you? What's next, breathing? "I was breathing before it was cool" stupid hipsters..
@Mac1634 the song portraits regular life as boring and regular, it made me want to beak out and do something different, its not the fact that its mainstream that it doesn't/didn't appeal to me so go fu ck yourself. its just the way the song makes regular life look like, i am fully aware that there is much more to that life, and i probably going to end up in the exact place the song describes.
No way out of the little boxes sadly. Just the practical, modern outcome of human life on earth. We live in a silent, self created prison that nobody seems to mind
@quantomintomentum True: But like Billy Holliday sang, "God Bless The Children that gots his own". So many people in other countries wish they had what we are able to have in this country. God bless those who have lost their homes because of who knows? But lucky are those who have those "Little ticky Tacky Little Boxes. A lucky, long time ticky tacky little 1500 sq. ft. home owner.
little hipsters on the in the Urban little hipsters riding fixies, little hipster little hipsters little hipsters all the same. theres a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one and there all riding fixies and they all look just the same.
If you only watch the American news on T.V. that is generated by public opinion polls only, you will soon find yourself right at home in one of thoes little boxes where everyone just looks and sounds the same.Take care ADonovan43
@DeathPodJr Don't stop trying. Pete Seeger is saying that you don't have to live the American dream.. it's not so hot and it's the same as everyone else. Be different. Whatever is you !!!

"Little tubes stuck together, little tubes pay for sunny weather"
@GordonGraphic86 I don't think it has anything to do with capitalism. I think it's really more about human psycology, since everyone is living in boxes. Capitalism just so happens to be the culprit behind putting them in boxes :)
And if you look at socialistic countries, historically, they have always been a marvelous wonderland of free-spirited and creative people, and never, EVER but people in boxes.
Just in concentration camps. But oh well. At least not in boxes. :|
@AustrianChaos Canada was socialist once, we never put anyone in concentration camps o.o We put people in boxes once we started going capitalist though. BTW, I believe it was a fascist leader who put people in concentration camps through the guise of socialism :P
You know, I'm from Austria, and we're having a social market economy atm. I guess you have the same system? Anyways, this system has been working perfectly for several decades and still would, if it weren't for our stupid politicians.
In socialist countries, usually there is no political and little personal freedom. Look at China until the 90s. Or North Korea. I'm not saying pure capitalism is the solution - but pure socialism is it even less.
@er20092009 First off chill out dude that's pretty uncalled for. Second off, yes i'm in college but that doesn't mean I'm a know it all. I guess higher education is frowned upon where you're from. This song is a critique of the post WWII trend of building neighborhoods and even towns out of copycat houses. The houses have no personality and neither do the people living inside of them because the american dream was shoved down these people's throats and that's all they know. Not a kids song.
@Wanteddreadandalive Not quite. Ticky-tacky is political correctness. You have to buy a SUV because your neighbor has one. You have to buy a in-ground pool because your neighbor has one. There is only one way to think. Only one way to do. You want to be different? OK, pick a color. Politics? Pic a party, they give you 2, Rep, or Dem. That's all of the difference that anyone needs. Everybody must fit in! There will be Hell to pay if you don't fit in!
@Wanteddreadandalive it's not ur professor you heard it from..it's wikipedia "The profundity of the satire is attested by a university professor of the time who said that, "I've been lecturing my classes about middle-class conformity for a whole semester. @NewOrleansCrazy funny you ask that...i consider it folk myself. if you check out other songs by malvina reynolds there's some good stuff. great lyrics.
He didn't steal it. She allowed Pete to perform this song. Plus if you would look back at the folk genre you would notice that many of them would play each others songs. Joan Baez and Bob Dylan did this a lot.

He didn't steal it. She allowed Pete to perform this song. Plus if you would look back at the folk genre you would notice that many of them would play each others songs. Joan Baez and Bob Dylan did this a lot.
