I believe that this is one of the all-time greatest albums ever. This particular song was also played by The Home Service (one of the many combinations and permutations of Fairport Convention / Albion Band, this time led by John Tams) which was the orchestra for _The Mysteries_ in London in the late '70s, one of the theatrical highlights of my life. As I recall, this was played, appropriately, during the scene showing The Flight Into Egypt.
Pretty song. Sad song! Does tend to bring out the weepies. Thanks for putting this out and thanks to TeddyRdiator who suggested we all come and listen! I think I'll move on to the sidebar and check out more from The albion Band. The name Kate M sounds familiar for some reason. Do you know what else she's done that I might have come across her?
This song just slays with with its plaintive lyrics and the pleading sound of the voices. It is one I can't sit through without being moved to tears...
@TeddyRadiator You introduced me to this song and I'm so addicted. Just had to come on here to share with another friend who will appreciate it. *hugs* ~banjobraids
the instrumental that opens this track is called Ampleforth which the segues very nicely into Lay Me Low, the perfect illustration of what is argueably The Albion Band's finest hour, Rise Up Like The Sun.

Blame it on TeddyRadiator that I now have an addiction to this song! I, too, will have to check out this band as I was once a fan of Steeleye Span.

Yes, it stuck after six seconds with me too. Still, it's my favourite version of Lay Me Low. I have the album on vinyl and must listen to it again.
