They're musical influence is outrageously over rated. In the image and attitude department, they're in the upper echelon. But lets not get carried away. They were bold and confident coming out on stage in a drag. By audacity alone they seemed to have been persuasive. But if they didn't look the way they looked they would not be remembered for their songs alone. Thats a fact.
@Ronniewants2die you're full of it. watch the documentary "end of the century" and hear the ramones talk about the great and simple (as in no long solos, etc.) music of the dolls. do some proper research (and NOT your biased opinion) and you will find out just how influential the dolls were (and continue to be) to many bands. never say "that's a fact" when you don't know what you're talking about.
@Ronniewants2die:Stick to Schostakovitch+Nina Hagen, whose main hobby during the last years was to chase German prominents out of talk shows with pre-dementia scream attacks+sing silly gospel songs for German Calvinists (YEP,she got PIOUS). Some people like showbiz in crazy clothes on stage, others don´t, but as an obvious Hagen devotee you should not be so silly+slag off the N.Y. Dolls´ image, they had more influence than hardly anyone,in dressing style+in playing punk´n´roll.
I think I've just spotted Steve Jones Les Paul that Sylvain Sylvain is playing that's if it is true about Malcolm Mclaren robbing stuff from the dolls
@wipers86 That is Steve’s Les Paul custom. But McLaren never stole it. Sylvain gave it to McLaren to take to England, and he said that he would come out a little bit after...but he never did. So he gave it to Steve.
I heard the album version and if they had released a version without the screeching background singers, it would have been a big hit. I can't make it more than than 30 seconds of the album version.
Great footage. Lots of TV shots got destroyed. Glad this was saved & even gladder that you uploaded it. Thanks!
Yes, the Cadets (recorded this song as the 'Jacks") had the famous version . The Jayhawks did the original version. Like many up-and-coming-but-never-got-there bands, their cover was quickly covered by the Cadets. Marketing muscle took over from there. Karl Perkins knows how this goes.
Don't forget the writers. Stranded in the Jungle was written by Ernestine Smith and James Johnson.
A guy in Chicago, Michigan started glam rock by using pool chalk under a beer light at a dive across from the 1920's wood pallet and auto graveyard. That town isn't even there any more. It turned into a beer and wine shop for right wing crackers who get high.
@bigal838 I think all of them had "invented" it. They had a very different style, but the people says that they were glams for his clothes style and make up. But if you look to Bolan, Bowie and the new york dolls, they are very different.
@bigal838 Well, New York Dolls (& Lou Reed) in New York, it was just the fashion of the New York underground and all. Bowie was influenced by Marc Bolan, but was already dressing strange (red hair in Space Oddity video, Man Who Sold The World cover, big hats in the Warhol meeting). But when Bolan broke trough with White Swan with all those glitters and all, Bowie must have thought ''Let's go all the way'' and then invented Ziggy.
I remember hearing this on the radio about 4 times in 1974. Too bad because I ended up following disco a few yars later -vs- punk. Many years later I realize what I missed back then.
@giggie LOL yep meanwhile back in 2010 we have squat for good music that is on the radio...oh I'm sorry the jonas brother LOL yeah OK maybe on planet boring.
It sucks being the age I am, there are no good bands like this around anymore. I'm fine listening to New York Dolls and Ramones and various punk bands from the 70's and 80's, but there are no good shows to go to. Musicians now just aim to please with what is popular regardless of how much they suck at what they are doing.
@alk3tom These are the same reasons a lot of good bands got started. A lot of punk bands were tired of the scene at the time or the music the radio was trying to feed them, so they made their own music. A lot of good bands form as reactions to this kind of stuff.
@alk3tom And the REAL problem is when you are at a show, The crowd turns into a fucking Karaoke ship from hell. It's impossible to see and hear a band today.
probably one of the less popular Dolls tunes- but I love it! At the Burlington VT show in June 2009 DavidJo asked for any requests and I hollered for this and everyone around me looked at me like I had 2 freakin heads... They did an awesome acoustic version of this during their May 2009 tour of South America- on the radio- DavidJo forgot a few lyrics, but, what the hell..
Trivia time!: The white Les Paul custom that Sylvain is using in this show is the very same one that Steve Jones used in the Sex Pistols. Malcolm McClaren got it for him from Sylvain Sylvain. Cool eh?
o gomes é um cara muito loco, adoro arroz docê, rir me fa muito feliz... diretas já e viva os andromedas........ paz a todos os fanaticos por pão........
I'd rather hear David Jo than SJH anyday, in fact it's a great way to hear Hawkins material if you ask me. This shit lives!!!!!!!!!
I saw them in Portland back in May, attended rehearsals and then dined with them, filmed the show and went back stage and partied with them, it was an amazing experience. And I do this with plenty of bands, the NY Dolls are as good as it gets, as long as you have good taste you will see that.
Meanwhile back in lousy 2011 Aerosmith is bringing their "one of a kind live show" to Latin America and Japan oh fuckin' yaaaay!
