I found the first part of her madness, where she's kinda humping, to be kinda amusing...
but this part, this part is just so... disturbing. Her little laugh, and the imaginary flowers, her face is still pink from crying, and the song... oh, it's just so terrible to see her so broken down...
@greg11bishop Because she went mad. The fact that it's all caused because of her father's accidental death by Hamlet, who thought it was Claudius and whom Ophelia thought loved her is what makes it so tragic.
@asafk8 Yes I know she's gone mad; I've read the play :)
Yeah...Hamlet going mad, then him rejecting her, and then him killing her father (but I don't know if she knew if it was an accident). She was one of the only innocent characters but she got quite screwed...
@greg11bishop I don't think he really did mean to reject her. I personally think that it was all part of his pretending to be mad. The whole is-he-really-mad-or-is-he-just-pretending thing really comes into mind in this version twice; at the scene where Polonius dies, when Hamlet sees his father's ghost and his mother doesn't and she asks him what is he looking at. The other is when Hamlet confronts Laertes during Ophelia's burial and yells about how much he loved her.
@BeauteousMcKahl while I agree cos of the length...it contends much with when Hamlet realizes she's gone and he loved her more than anything and anyone.
Laertes is supposed to be more handsome in appearance. Trust Branagh not to allow himself to be o'er-shadowed! Kate Winslet was a very good Ophelia thank goodness
as much as i love her i cant help but feel like she should haveput more emotion into it. Not that its emotionless cause i know people are gonna get pissed when i put this comment up. She started off at the top and its only at the very end "For bonny sweet Robin..." that she shows a different layer to the character. I enjoyed this version a bit but it just seems to be missing levels. Not bagging on her or anything, cause i know im gonna get butchered if people think that >.<
Ahhh, I HATE this Laertes. It's a shame too because this actor usually does so well in Branagh's films. This is exactly the wrong way to do Shakespeare, by just relying on the words to act for him. Laertes is supposed to be soft and tender to Ophelia and is supposed to have his heart broken by what he is seeing. That...doesn't happen here.
I like how this version has the whole script in it, but I dislike how it's in a modern time period. In the other Hamlet (1990 with Helena Bonham Carter) I like how it's in the original time period, but they completly butchered the script. I dont think Fortinbras was even mentioned in that version. I wish those two versions could be blended together. That would be awsome!
Think about the lines as just your reaction to what just happened in the scene. Most people think that Shakespeare= words, words, words, but it's really not. Shakespeare was great at writing honest reactions. Just use them.
@jakefitt94 She should have gotten an Oscar nomination for this. Considering the fact that she's been nominated so many times, and that she won for "The Reader', it's amazing that she wasn't nominated for her Ophelia in "Hamlet".
I think the Academy is biased against nominating the acting performances in Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare films.
her chuckle is so cute

Amazing job by Kate. Makes me cry when she sings. More so when there is a reprise later on when she dies.

in comparison to Mariah Gale's act of Ophelia, this is so much better. You see her madness rather than just thoughtless screaming and crying.
brilliant

In no other actress has Ophelia been more perfectly played, it's made me understand that this 4:35 is were Ophelia truly died.
She surrendered her soul and gave up on living. Drowning was simply a means to exit.

She did madness believably, not in a hammy way.
