As many others have commented. This documentary is just so good & the people in it are just so likable. I almost imeddiately just felt bad with em' not breaking through cause damn, that Lips really have the heart of a rocker. As he say also say in the documentary, he don't care if he plays for 5 or for 5 thousand people, he just want to play his music. Would defo watch that documentary again, kudos to the director.
Success is sweet: the sweeter if long delayed and attained through manifold struggles and defeats. Anvil you are starting to get some of the success you deserve.
Not a metal fan but I thought this film was first class, really brought home the ups and downs of people and how they overcome the bad episodes in life.
Thumbs up to the film maker and to the band. Awesome movie (just went online and brought a shirt after watching it on Foxtel in the hope it would help fund their new cd....cause thats how this flick made me feel.) Bravo Bravo Bravo
Total respect for Anvil simply because they have spirit, yes they do.
THE TRUE DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH.
Cool, down to earth, real beings and truly smiling at life, still laughing at all that has been thrown at them...they are certainly not inflated, pompous, disposable idols.
The film really moved me. Its a story of a metal band, but its really a story of being positive and following your heart. The movie vindicated may 30 year metal addiction. I made my mom watch it, she said I remember that song coming from your bedroom!!!
I just saw this movie for the 1st time yesterday and it is inspiring. They have been around for 30 years and they still haven't made it. They came close but I believe they were just a little ahead of their time. Helix another Canadian band that hasn't quite made it over the hump to stardom and they've been around since '74. It is great to see Anvil getting another go round as they are currently touring North America then will be doing dates in Australia and Japan.
This movie wasnt just about ANVIL it was a lesson in life to never give up your hopes and dream and to stay positive whatever you do great film well they have their fame now
There's life lesson in this film: Never give up, work hard, keep your friends close and you can succeed. Totally touching and inspirational film, whether you like metal or not. I do.
Watched this yesterday. I listen to HipHop and don't even own a rock album. But these guys are great. One of the best, if not, the best documentary i have ever seen.
yeah, he'd jump in front of them and say, "yeah, no disrespect, but (enter any black person documentary here) had the best documentary of all time"!!! Damn, that guys needs to jump off a bridge
Yeah, some black ppl like this asshole can be really shit (this coming from a black person as well). This movie, on the other hand really touched me a whole lot.Been watchin it again and again for the past few weeks. I've come to love these guys . Lookin forward to 'Juggernaut of Justice' coming soon!
As a musician myself, strandedathome, I have come to realize that assholes come in all colors and so do good people. For instance, what Beyonce Knowles did after that was a 100% class act thing to do, and I'm not even a fan of hers.
This Movie Rules.. For anyone who's ever strived or reached for a goal.. Must See it.. All will relate in some form.. You'll be rooting for Anvil from the start.. This film "Makes me want to be a better man" haha
I wouldn't be a major fan of metal, but this is one of the best Rock/Documentarys i've seen in a long time, Lips and Rob are just 2 down to earth, sound blokes, if it wasn't for bad luck they'd have no luck at all, i hope this film gives them the recoginition and riches they deserve.
A little anecdote! Back in the '80's I was in this PACKED club in Toronto (Rock'n Roll Heaven) and I was there to see another band (SUCCSEXX). I accidently stepped on Lips' foot and he turns to ME and APOLOGIZES!!! I thought for SURE he would've told me OFF!!! You SEE!!!! That's the kind of MENSCHES!!!! (Gentlemen) these guys are!! They are the COOLEST, KINDEST people you would EVER MEET!! I'm SO HAPPY that they are getting the RECOGNITION they DESERVE!! TONIGHT SHOW was GREAT!
the tear droppimg part was the very end when they play in Japan and it was packed full of Anvil fans it was like the waite is over go home kiss your wives and Torah's boys...the devil wants you back!
if we take anything from this film it will be to live your dream and always remember our friendships are everything!sad how someone from the mickey mouse club can go on to sell millions.but people who really play get pushed away..this diplays why record companies are no longer.i really hope that they some how make some money doing what they love and find there way.i was really not a fan of theres because i really was never exsposed to there music.but i am now..keep pushin guys ..your all heart!
Like-wise I saw them on VH1 last night for the first time...Just as DaVinci and Michael Angelo had now-barely-known people that inspired them,so is Anvil.
i remember seeing them live at the gas works down stairs..it was at least 23 years ago..lips playing slide with the dildo was funny as hell.bands like priest, the scorps, iron maiden were massive back then...Anvil put on a great live show, but the music was kinda weak..anyway it should be about the love for your music not the record sales...respect!!
truly an amazing and emotional documentary. The heart and dedication these guys have is inspiring and i am glad to see this movie has given them more recognition. I never knew who Anvil was before, but now I do and wont forget. Keep on Rocking on Anvil and a big fuck you to the music industry
I watched the movie twice on an Air Canada flight to Hong Kong last week. Brought back for me those lazycrazy days of the 80's immersed in drink & drug metal to the mat!!
The Anvil story is profound ,Lips &Rob,now in their 50"s have remained whole heartedly immersed in an unchanging metal-stupor that begun around the age of 15. Like are these guys real?...YES! they are from Canada where nothing ever changes except the seasons.
Absolutely True Blue - hope they hit the jackpot with this movie!!
well... just saw the film and it is quite frankly one of the more touching documentaries I think I´ve ever seen. It has such depth and the story is told so elegantly... I can´t say much more than... see it and enjoy! =)
i love the fact this director hasnt done this purely to try and take the piss.. its obviously got its humour element like spinal tap (which isnt lost on the band) but its done with heart also.. regardless of it being about guys playing metal seems like its just a story about pursuing your dreams and being true to yourself.. now i gotta see it.
Huh, I never heard of this band. I saw the movie trailers and thought it was like a Spinal Tap sort of thing. I don't really like this kind of music so not as interested to see the film as I first thought.
Sacha definitly did the band justice. This film had it all,the reviews were all dead on...it made you laugh,it made you cry,its one of the best independent films I have ever seen.
10/10
ive been a fan of Anvil since 1985,and its great to see classic thrash bands still around and getting recognition today.Same can be said for bands like Overkill,Annihilator,Exodus,Exciter,Testament,Infernal Majesty,Onslaught, etc.
Great film...even Shitallica and others like Motorhead say these guys were incredible and still none of those big names SHITALLICA for starters would give ANVIL pocket change or a crumb.
I never liked Shitallica and for lemmy, c'mon mother fucker after all these years rolling in some dough still too fuckin cheap to get that huge fuckin mole removed from your face.
I hope this is a comeback for ANVIL they fuckin deserve it.
yeah i saw they were gonna be on some of ac/dc tours but then i heard it wasnt gonna be winnipeg, geeeeez i was a big fan, my fave album was hard 'n' heavy.
u lucky thing, im goin to dc here in ireland on 28th june but they have the answer supporting them, there gud id jus love to see anvil:) u lucky thing, ohh also search in utube for acdc and then sort by newest u can follow their tour from the clips posted by ppl, right now there in norway:)
I'm going on 40 years old and first heard Anvil when I was about 18 or 19, these guys rock! and I always wondered whatever happended to them, it's good to see that they are now getting the exposure that they so well deserve.
this movie fucking ROCKED ! there isnt one band out there that is truer to the music and to the pure unadulterated love of the music than Anvil. Seriously, nothing but gigantic amounts of respect for what these guys have gone through. They are a source of inspiration for anyone who never ever gave up no matter how high the deck was stacked against them. Anvil rules ! ( Yes I am old enough to remember them and I loved them back then too. )
In the movie, Lemmy, Slash, Tom Araya and Scott Ian all cite Anvil as influences. If they say that Anvil were good, then they were. It's a compelling film, regardless of whether you like the band or not.
Another great metal doc is Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, just in case you havent seen it. See how I got my point across without name calling or swearing?!
well, many people have said that Anvil aren't that great, maybe you're right. At the same time, Im going to try and see them in Calgary, June 25th. Why, because I had their first album when I was in junior or senior high, and they were relevant at the time. They cant compete with Slayer, Megadeth (another show I will be attending this month), but thats not the point, is it? they have persevered, never gave up, and that shows and builds character.
@ dickravis:you started to put anvil down.. of course someone will be offended.. and yet you wonder ?
@ shamanysam:you did overreact and werent diplomatic enough.. too emotional bro.. you're 100 % right, but you cant fight fire with fire.. be water my friend... ;o)
Im an asshole to assholes , good guy to the good guys ,diplomatic to diplomatics ,smart ass to smart asses ,hetero hero to faggs ,musician to musicians ,helper to the unfortunate and so on!!
I know that 2 wrongs wouldn't make one right..but i also know from experience ,that there is assholes out there that u can't be diplomatic with at all...u just gotta be like them for a minute ,and then they'll shrink back!
This r people that r frustrated in real life ,so they compensate their frust in here!
As for this dickravis guy..i'm not worried at all..i even think i spent my precious time educating him a bit..and i'm sure he knows now that there's crazier people out there and bigger dicks then he is. ertan31 ,u seem to be cool..but being emotional just shows u how much i stand for what i do. Musicians r cool people..dickravis is just a consumer that claims having excellent taste in music!!
If u have a hangover after a long drinking night....what do u fight it with?! Alcohol?! : D
i'm a musician myself... and i know how far i am with my band from the dream being a rockstar... what what does it mean to be a rockstar ? fame, money, groupies, interviews, drugs etc. ? after all its about the passion to music as art to express yourself... these guys did and still do.. in their own way...
ok.. their lyrics arent the best like typical in that heavy metal genre I#m not a big heavy metal fan anyways, never was, will never be.... but it doesnt matter actually... these guys were authentic in the movie and are in reallife.. the message of their lifestyle is to dream on til the dream comes true... they can take away your house, your car, your everything but not your dreams...

dude - when i saw A:TSoA on tuesday may 5th (09) in san jose, ca robb and lips were there at the screening. they said as of that date they had only sold 4000 units of their latest record. FOUR THOUSAND?!? even with all this hype they're not selling units?
now why don't you ask the members of anvil if THEY believe that units sold is an indicator of success and something they'd like to improve upon.
yea true im sure if you ask them they would love to sell more records but if you want to think that way i guess the jonas brothers are a better band than black sabbath
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
don't be a fucking idiot..
where did i even suggest that album sales alone justify a career?
however, you are a dipshit if you don't think album sales suggest success and/or relevance.
why don't you turn down the retard knob and think about what you'd like your own musical legacy to be...
i'd want a) to make an impact on my genre b) be respected by my contemporaries c) make enough money at it so i don't have to have a fucking day job ever again.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
they knew for a year that this film was coming out. the fact that they couldn't / didn't get a label or a distribution deal to capitalize on the publicity afforded by the movie speaks volumes. it tell us that NOOOOOOOOOBODY wants to touch these guys with a ten foot pole and that there is a COLOSSAL hole where the management is supposed to be.
i'd love to be wrong, but i'm not; this is a below average band that got 15 minutes in the sun and it's just about over ...hold on a second ...now.
They released an album during the movie in wich it only sold 4,000 copies, i think the name was this is 14 or thirteen idk lol. the new album hasnt been released yet and dont realy know if they have a record label. If they cant make their new album sell then you are right, they are a below then average band.
U love famous bands..yeah?!What'd made u love them..?!The music or their fame status?! If u r so negative about such a pioneer trash/speed/ metal band that inspired the rest of the famous bands u know ,and still has the nuts & guts to be rolling like they do..then u r a sexually frustrated linking park lover from the charts developing movement!!Go fuck your self..with your own dickravis, cause u r done in about NOW and always been lonely!!Pussy!!

wow, speaking of angry you use A LOT of exclamation points. it like you're yelling, but instead of actually yelling your just talking out of your ass on the internet.
if you want to stop guessing and find out the kind of music i actually like, you can check my favorites list.
(i know you're not smart enough to figure that out so i thought i'd give you some help.)
and if i'm wrong about ANVIL, why are they already being forgotten again?
ya think maybe lars and lemme just wanted to be in a movie?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
speaking of lonely - you have no friends.
i sent a request because i'm willing to reach out and help the less fortunate.
(like this fucktard who tries to project his own pathetic and meaningless life on anyone who's views are an upsetting eye opener to his uneducated rock and roll fantasy that was fed to them by a movie that was financed by VH1)
Someone is paying u to be an asshole in YouTube?! Duude!!And u felt for that?! U ain't better than them in this case!! U better be embarrassed!! The first step to improvement is the self-realization..so go ahead reprogram yourself ,in order 2 become a better human..it is not too late yet!!
I enjoyed the movie, and I admit that I wasn't familiier with their stuff. I can tell that their songs suck even after hearing little pieces of them. Thats the reason they didn't make it. The music itself is ok, but the lyrics are ridiculous. Still, as a veteran of many bands, I hope that this movie helps them get their due after busting their asses for 30 years.
According to guys like Lars Ulrich & Dave Mustaine, it was bands like Anvil, Raven & Motorhead that formed the foundation of thrash metal, not Black Sabbath & Judas Priest. Sure, those two are the godfathers of heavy metal, but we are talking about speed metal and thrash here! Anvil were huge! I don't think it was necessarily poor songwriting or lack of talent that was the reason for their lack of big success. Metal on Metal & Forged in Fire are two of the finest heavy metal albums ever forged!
Wow. I feel like a dick for not saying happy bday to lips. Anvil is a real band that i loved in the early 80's....Hope he feels better knowing that we have a park named after him here in KW...........Cheers
i just came home from seing the movie at The Music Box in chicago. i've been playing music since 1970 and this film really tugged at my heart. after the film ended lips robb and glenn 5 walked into the theater and really gave us a surprise of being there. they had a 2o minute Q&A. they are so down to earth. afterward i got all three of them to sign there new cd THIS IS THIRTEEN. what a treat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
man thats friggin' cool. I just saw the movie 2day and I know(cuz I just sat thru 2 showings- I couldn't move after it was over the 1st time, I was knocked over), this movie just shot right to the top of my top 10 movie list.
great freakin' movie and a cool pair of dudes, for reals.
LOLZ they even got a 'stone'enge' joke in!! ;0 this movie does look freakin' awesome... :) can't wait to see it, and hope the lads have the bestest of luck grinding out some new metal. ;0 sounds like they were ahead of their time!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I doubt that, and the reason is because Anvil's songwriting has always been very lame....all of their songs are very typical, redundant, uninspired metal songs.
Nothing particular about them, nothing that really sticks out, nothing that makes them interesting....
Lips, Robb and Heavy Metal are like one ! GREAT!

Lips and Rob are already legends in their own right.
Everything else is all about record sales which sadly these days doesnt always translate into great music.
They made it already, they made three classic archetypal albums that laid the ground work for 'thrash metal'.
Its just a shame that others took the credit and it always comes down to bad management!!

Huh, I never heard of this band. I saw the movie trailers and thought it was like a Spinal Tap sort of thing. I don't really like this kind of music so not as interested to see the film as I first thought.

this movie was absolutly incredible!

I hope this is a comeback for ANVIL they fuckin deserve it.

this movie fucking ROCKED ! there isnt one band out there that is truer to the music and to the pure unadulterated love of the music than Anvil.

Sergioloser 2 years ago
well, many people have said that Anvil aren't that great, maybe you're right. At the same time, Im going to try and see them in Calgary, June 25th. Why, because I had their first album when I was in junior or senior high, and they were relevant at the time. They cant compete with Slayer, Megadeth (another show I will be attending this month), but thats not the point, is it? they have persevered, never gave up, and that shows and builds character.

you educated me alright; you taught me that you're a fucking imbecile and an internet weirdo who know shit about music.
i commented on this video to state the obvious, that ANVIL got lost in the shuffle because they kinda suck.
instead of just being crazy and kinda gay, why don't you prove me wrong with some facts.

i'm a musician myself... and i know how far i am with my band from the dream being a rockstar... what what does it mean to be a rockstar ? fame, money, groupies, interviews, drugs etc. ? after all its about the passion to music as art to express yourself... these guys did and still do.. in their own way...
ertan31 2 years ago 6
ok.. their lyrics arent the best like typical in that heavy metal genre I#m not a big heavy metal fan anyways, never was, will never be.... but it doesnt matter actually... these guys were authentic in the movie and are in reallife.. the message of their lifestyle is to dream on til the dream comes true... they can take away your house, your car, your everything but not your dreams...

dude - when i saw A:TSoA on tuesday may 5th (09) in san jose, ca robb and lips were there at the screening. they said as of that date they had only sold 4000 units of their latest record. FOUR THOUSAND?!? even with all this hype they're not selling units?
now why don't you ask the members of anvil if THEY believe that units sold is an indicator of success and something they'd like to improve upon.
nice try.
dickravis 2 years ago
yea true im sure if you ask them they would love to sell more records but if you want to think that way i guess the jonas brothers are a better band than black sabbath

don't be a fucking idiot..
where did i even suggest that album sales alone justify a career?
however, you are a dipshit if you don't think album sales suggest success and/or relevance.
why don't you turn down the retard knob and think about what you'd like your own musical legacy to be...
i'd want a) to make an impact on my genre b) be respected by my contemporaries c) make enough money at it so i don't have to have a fucking day job ever again.
tell me how to do this without selling records.

they knew for a year that this film was coming out. the fact that they couldn't / didn't get a label or a distribution deal to capitalize on the publicity afforded by the movie speaks volumes. it tell us that NOOOOOOOOOBODY wants to touch these guys with a ten foot pole and that there is a COLOSSAL hole where the management is supposed to be.
i'd love to be wrong, but i'm not; this is a below average band that got 15 minutes in the sun and it's just about over ...hold on a second ...now.
dickravis 2 years ago
They released an album during the movie in wich it only sold 4,000 copies, i think the name was this is 14 or thirteen idk lol. the new album hasnt been released yet and dont realy know if they have a record label. If they cant make their new album sell then you are right, they are a below then average band.

I enjoyed the movie, and I admit that I wasn't familiier with their stuff. I can tell that their songs suck even after hearing little pieces of them. Thats the reason they didn't make it. The music itself is ok, but the lyrics are ridiculous. Still, as a veteran of many bands, I hope that this movie helps them get their due after busting their asses for 30 years.

here's the deal - if they wrote better songs, they would have been bigger.
they have paid a lot of dues, but in the long run, the bands that left them in the dust all those years ago were superior in talent and creativity.
this wasn't just another case of them missing the train; they never had a ticket.
dickravis 2 years ago
you maybe right.
maybe all they were was just a flash in the pan.
You can't deny that the flash formed all metal after it. That white hot flash of molten metal.
All the Heavy Metal gods respect them ......they must be wrong....according to you.

according to history and reality and their record sales and sb1127, i'm right.
and yes, i deny that this band is the very blueprint for all metal to follow.
i give a little more credit to, oh i dunno - black sabbath?
dickravis 2 years ago
Uh and maybe Judas Priest?!?
hankandthetwins 2 years ago 4
According to guys like Lars Ulrich & Dave Mustaine, it was bands like Anvil, Raven & Motorhead that formed the foundation of thrash metal, not Black Sabbath & Judas Priest. Sure, those two are the godfathers of heavy metal, but we are talking about speed metal and thrash here! Anvil were huge! I don't think it was necessarily poor songwriting or lack of talent that was the reason for their lack of big success. Metal on Metal & Forged in Fire are two of the finest heavy metal albums ever forged!
thefadeaway101 2 years ago
I really agree with you. I like the band alot after seeing this doc, but the fact is, the lyrics are very lacking.
The musicianship is pretty spot on though. They just need better songs. Alot better songs.

I doubt that, and the reason is because Anvil's songwriting has always been very lame....all of their songs are very typical, redundant, uninspired metal songs.
Nothing particular about them, nothing that really sticks out, nothing that makes them interesting....

Soo, what you're saying is you aren't a fan.
Metal On Metal and Forged In Fire were both bangin albums.... before Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer.
