another thing to do to the flathead six is to balance the rotating assembly. there is a guy onlinecalled "manifolds by moose.com" he has some real cool manifolds for flathead mopar sixes and stovebolt chevy 235s. check out his stuff
i have basically the same engine in a 40 plymouth coupe and the gas mileage did not change a whole lot from stock. got 17 mpg stock and now get 15-16 mpg now.people who have multiple carbs don't really care about mpgs anyway. depends how you step on the loud pedal
Most folks consider these engines boat anchors, you should be able to pick one up in just about any junk yard. They were also used in combines, welders, water pumps, airport tugs, etc. NAPA still carries most of the engine parts too.
@idahoblueskies Thanks! I've wanted to build a '27 Ford hot rod for quite a while but have been waiting to find a cool engine, this is it then. Somebody coulda built this in the pre-'53 hot rod scene
@DamnStraightM35A2 ok in each carb theres2 to 4 jets more jets more gas this car has dual 4 jets so thats 8 so that will empty your tank faster im a auto mechanic at wyotech in laguna beach ca
@BlackLabelFREAK yes twice as many jets. BUT each jet only has to work half as hard, so if you drive NORMALLY really no change. drive hard, then yes youre right. it will allow you to run out fairly quickly.
I just finished putting an Offenhauser dual intake on my 48 Plymouth flathead six. Used two 1946 Carter W-1 Carbs. I got the intake manifold from Exeter Auto Parts, they keep them in stock. Have not split the exhaust yet, does it improve the HP at all? Wouldn't ever ruin that car with a V8...six is enough and sounds amazing, great low RPM torque to, and smooth.
More people should do some stuff with these old flat 6's a lot of people spend the money and by v8's It's nice to see a classic with an orignal motor.
I have the flathead 6 in my 1958 plymouth. It's been overhauled and i had the exhaust manifold split, put true dual exhaust 2 1/2 in. pipes and 2 barrel carburetor. What else can I do? Any ideas?
@Clintyboy122 I have a 74 chevy nova with the stock 250 I was thinking of putting 3 two barrel carbs on it. (So each cylinder gets it's own barrel). With some port lumps. And switching the points out with a solid state. Would that be overkill though with the three twos? Should I upgrade pistons and connecting shafts to something stronger or will it take the increased power?
duude the engine heads are awasome , where did you got those, i have a 49 DeSoto 2dr, and i would like to get some like urs,, and the headers damm they freaking nice too ... very nice paint job tsss loks sweet ,, clean details tss just nice very nice
Really? i was looking on summit, and couldn't find any, ill have to look harder then! do they also have headers? What else is done to your motor?what are some specs? I want to keep my car with the original six, but would like to have some more power.
I have never seen stuff like that... Where do you find those parts...?

Would this have Babbits? Also, how hard is it to find a similar Plymouth engine?

No babbits...

is there bigger heads or anything like that you could put on it. I honestly don't know much about the flatheads I just like the look and the sound.

Where do i get one of those intakes for mine?
41deluxeRatrod 3 years ago
My intake is a vintage Edmunds, found on ebay in 2001. You can buy a new Offenhauser version for about $250 from Summit Racing.

The air cleaner cover and coil cover are from O'Brien Truckers, and the finned aluminum head is from EDGY.
