  • I got this game when it came out in 99 and loved it. It was actually the first castlevania game I'd ever played so I didnt know about other games in the series.

  • Shadow Man 64 is a good one to review too...

  • I liked the violin solo in the beginning but that was about it. Legacy of Darkness was better...

  • Casltevania 64 / Legacy of Darkness are 2 of the best adventure games on the 64, hell 2 of the best games for the system period when you consider the library is only about 300 games total. Those are just 2 games that you really feel like you've been through something by the end. It's annoying how a lot of kids hate on them since it's the "in" thing to do.

It's good to see Bloodlines get some love too, another overlooked but strong entry into the series.

  • Sorry to say but all the praise does not help the fact the game is nearly unplayable due to the horrible camera but I like legacy of darkness because it fixed that glaring flaw.

  • I have only 1 problem with this game; the camera. For me is implayable but since legacy of darkness fix that issue i found this game pretty good, i love the ending and the final boss fight.

I think that the only reason people bash this game; the camera.

  • what a dissaponitment this was... i loved super castlevania 4 and i remember paying £50 for this horseshit. it was awful with crap music crap story crap graphics even for the time. avoid this game!

  • I was 5 when this game came out, and when i became about 9 i played it constantly! I LOVE this game! I wish i could find a cd with the soundtracks on it :(

  • @PiinkHairspray

You can search for the soundtracks here on youtube ^^

Just type : Castlvania 64 music

    ;)

  • @Thexrayscope I know, but i wish i could like buy them or be able to put them on my ipod so i could listen to them everywhere D:

  • You have reviewers who get PAID to do reviews that aren't even half as good as this one. Well done Sir. Thank you.

  • Red jewels were actually used in Castlevania: Bloodlines as well.

  • yes I remember this game when I was a little kid, it was a blast. I always thought it was awesome. As I got older and got into the castlevania series I was always shocked to find out that everyone hated the 3d castlevanias....they never gave me a straight answer either it was just "castlevania shouldn't be 3d cause it sucks"

  • i played this when it came out. i did not like the jump to 3D and did not like this game and since have no got into any other castlevania 3d games, i gave lament of innocence a chance back when it came out and again didnt enjoy the experience. i may give lords of shadow a chance in a bit, i do agree with you on the music though. i love the violin solo on the games title screen

  • @gregorymwishart Great insight! I can understand not liking the jump. I still don't in a lot of ways. I didn't care for Lament, but I really enjoyed Curse of Darkness. Lords of Shadow is definitely worth playing; it's a tremendous game!

  • Thank god we think alike! This castlevania was a milestone and it was pretty dam good! I see little 12 year olds reviewing now a days saying this game sucks and they die every 5 mins, its cuz they think if its not like xbox 360 or ps3 it sucks. So to those reviewers I WILL NEVER subscribe to u as long as I breathe! and @snowcon3 subscribed, liked I enjoy looking for more!

  • @Animekingification Thank you sir!

  • What was the racing game at 0:14?

  • @tjjavier That's Gale Racer (Rad Mobile) for the Sega Saturn.

  • @snowcon3 Thanks man! :)

  • Finally, someone who thinks this game is good. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one. Great review, keep it up!

  • Wow, massive points made in the last few minutes, and I agree entirely. It's an excellent game that's undeservedly bashed and overlooked. I would hit the "like" button ten times if YouTube would actually take it, haha!

  • Great video, i had legacy of darkness, not a bad games, although the camera was a bit of a pain, the character i played, could fire energy, which made it a bit easier.

  • I played a couple hours of this years ago but never finished it because I had heard of the "Legacy of Darkness" being an improved version of this. I've yet to ever pick a copy up though.

I did the same thing with Persona 3 when they announced FES. I need to just finish these games instead of quitting mid-way for enhanced/updated versions I never get around to playing.

    Excellent review

  • Though nothing can top 2D, Castlevania was definitely one of the 2D series that made a good transition to 3D.

  • Awesome review man, this has been on my list of games to pickup for a long time. I know this game get's a lot of shit for being one of the worst in the series but I enjoy it.

  • I always did prefer this over the other 2 3D ones that came on the PS2.Nice reviews man,i just came across them and will for sure subscribe.By the way what do you think of the reboot of Castlevania on Xbox/PS3? I really enjoyed it for the most part.Gotta love Vania especially Super Castlevania 4 and Symphony of the night,oh yeahhhhh!

  • good review

  • The same game? It's entirely different, all new layouts and new gameplay! Boooo!

  • I was just looking for a boxed copy of this =D

  • I played this when it first came out and didn't think it was too bad. I don't really remember much about it, though. It didn't leave much of a lasting impression for me... though I do remember the title music, which was a cool version of the Bloodlines music from Dracula X.

  • I don't think I've ever heard anyone say good things about this game. I will have to pick up a copy now.

  • I always thought this game was unfairly bashed. I really enjoyed it on N64. Seems like people just bashed it because it wasn't 2D. Maybe one of the most underrated games all time?

  • I have to say I was a little turned off by the graphics at first. Like you said: it didn't exactly age well. It does look like it plays extremely well, though, and certainly invokes the Castlevania feeling. I wish I had a chance to play it.

  • Great review, stay classic! :)

  • Excellent review! I "totally" agree with you my friend. I couldn't wait for this one to come out (just as I am for mostly EVERY Castlevania game)! I enjoyed it immensely! And wow, we also agree about our favorites. I was just shooting a segment for a Turbo Views DVD about how the PC-Engine version is one of my favorite iterations (and one of the few I imported as a kid). Great stuff!! :)

  • @spida1a Thanks a ton Chris! And to think, most people call me crazy for saying that Rondo and Bloodlines are my 2 favorite games in the series...

It's been overwhelming to see how many people really DID like the 64 version of the game, despite all the hate.

  • @snowcon3 Nah,screw that. A lot of those people have NEVER played the PC-Engine version (mostly basing their opinion on the inferior SNES port). :)

  • Great review

  • Awesome review! Unlike others who bashed this title, I can really tell you played this game and gave it a fair chance.

  • good review

  • I never understood why people hated this game, it was one of my favorites on the n64. I'd also liketo see a Hybrid Heaven review from you. I think it needs more love too.

  • @AceEbb77 Us Castlevania 64 lovers have to stick together!

  • @snowcon3

    That's "Castlevania", dude.

Didn't you watch your uber-informative video?

    Heh.

  • @cuttock My stable of monkey writers don't do a very good job of correcting me in the comments section.

  • @snowcon3

    Hahaha...that's brilliant!

Your stable of monkey writers are vastly more adept at writing than certain "unhappy" gamer reviewers we all know ;)

  • Those people saying it was a bad game had me fooled! Now I know better! Good review!

    MVHH

  • never played this game. nevere wanted to play this game as much as i wanna now! keep up the good reviews buddy!

  • As always great vid.

  • @avideogameguyc Thanks dude!

  • It's nice to see a positive review of that game, great job :D

I have both games myself, bought the 1st one when it came out and got lucky when I found the 2nd one on a flea market for a surprising low price a while ago.

  • @MightyTallestZim82 That's a good find! It normally goes for quite a bit. I think I paid around $30 or so for my copy!

  • How brave of you to conquer such a game! It's really not that terrible like everyone says...just get passed the shitty camera views and such, and you'll be fine. Great review!

  • @themegamancave I never seemed to ever have problems with the camera in Castlevania. To be honest, I thought it was much more obtrusive in Mario 64.

  • One of the common causes of hate for this game is its first time approach to 3D enviroments, which people in general hate change from the previous games but without change games would never evolve to amazing games we have today, so to this castlevania we owe are thanks too!!....also yet another stay classic review from snowcon3 =D

  • great review... I very much enjoyed this game to the fullest... was great for its time and still holds up today... and fairly lengthy with 2 stories and lots of secrets!!!

  • I think most people forgot about this game because most people did not like how the look of 3D was and most people at that time had Playstation 1 also.

  • Courage, Don't Leave me,

I Finish the game few times each years, And I still love it !

There is no Castlevania with the same ambiance, ''dark,mysterious,scary.....'' and there is VAMPIRES ! I'm happy since Lords of Shadow got some vampires :)

But Castlevania and Legacy of Darkness are My Favorites in the series !

  • @qwertine I've never actually heard anyone say that these 2 are their favorites! Pretty awesome! They're definitely underrated.

  • @snowcon3 Check for Knights of the Temple: The Infernal Crusade, another underated game with great ambiance and beautiful musics. This game was never released in America (I played it on Gamecube with a Freeloader) It's also one of my favorite game ;)

  • I loved the inverted castle in sotn added twice the gameplay and twice the fun :) great review Bracey stay classic ;)

  • Really great review (all 12 minutes flew by) and I loved your assessment at the end. This is probably the most informative *real* look at this game I've ever seen. Kudos!

  • @implantgames Thanks! I felt like no one else was doing it and that always bugged me.

  • When AVGN reviewed this I was upset he didn't go into more detail, which makes me glad you did this because you really delve deep in all your reviews. Kinda sucks when games like this and Contra can't make even power ups instead of one all powerful weapon you better hold onto. Really want to get this now.

  • @Noyjeetut Pick it up if you get the chance; I really hoped to get more people interested in this one by doing this video and hopefully people will give it a fair chance!

  • It's pretty refreshing to see this game get a fair review I must say. I had passed this one up back when it was new because I was a 2D snob and absolutely hated early 3D. I didn't warm up to 3D graphics until the Dreamcast came along. After seeing this though, I think I'll check it out. Another Konami game to add to my ever growing list.

  • @suicidalparrot Thanks! I really felt like no one was giving this one a fair shot. It's atmosphere is definitely unmatched!

  • Unfortunately not growing up with an N64 this was one of the many games I missed out on. It is on my N64 collectors list so hopefully I can give this game a good try, I feel very confident that I will enjoy it.

  • @TheCompletionist It DOES take some time to get used to. I've played the hell out of it over the years and it's really grown on me!

  • FINALLY! Someone else that can see that it's not as bad as the AVGN makes it out to be! I played it as a kid and loved it. I don't think it's aged as well as the original games have either, but it's defo not a terribad game. Yet another brilliant review, can't wait for the next one!

  • @DeraneosRetroGaming Thanks dude, and I agree with you 100%. Have you played Legacy?

  • @snowcon3 Briefly. Just borrowed it from a friend that had it back in the days. Wish I could've kept it for a while longer, as I'd just finished Castlevania. Gonna add it to my collection one day when I start making a decent paycheck again.

  • skeletons on motorcycles.

  • @roygbivniz Haha, a bit unrealistic, huh? Kind of like werewolves, giant dragons, and well, Dracula.

  • @snowcon3 Nothing wrong with being unrealistic. It is a game after all. Skeletons + Motorcycles = Awesome. Imagination is a wonderful thing. Great review btw.

  • @roygbivniz Indeed, and it's pretty fun to knock them right off those damn bikes too.

  • Great review. Thanks.

  • This was the first castlevania I ever played being at the right age for it and it soured castlevanias name for me for a long time, until the past 5 years or so.

  • @Zoogle88 So you played it again as an adult? It makes a huge difference.

  • @snowcon3 I don't like many early 3d games like this at all any way. Camera angles piss me off too much for the most part. I might play it again, but even some of the games I used to like I can hardly play anymore because of camera angle problems.
