  • I tried this method today and have already seen results. The smoke was more even and had no tongue bite which, I have a habit of getting. With more practice I see this as the method I will be using.

  • What make and model of lighter is that?

  • wow he is really serious about his pipe smoking!!

  • It is with a deep felt joy that I thank you for your 3 pipe-lighting technique videos... I tried smoking a pipe several years ago but quit due to not getting the taste I envisaged... bad technique. Thankfully I have recently started again and now, after watching your videos I feel that I know a really good technique... if only I had known from the start...

    Thank you my friend.

  • Thank You!

  • Sorry, but but the time he took to pinch, pack, and light his pipe in these, I'd already enjoyed 3 bowls.... Me thinks the quickest way that gets you to enjoying your tobacco is the best way. :)

  • thank you for your videos Frank! Geetings from France

  • lighting like that works when you're smoking indoors. smoking outdoors is a way different case that requires 5-10 draws

  • wow I didnt really think packing would make much of a difference.I have a method that works fine for me and that was that.I tried your method and I was pleasently surprised. It smoke better...no relights...longer then usually...and even with my aromatic burned well to the bottom without as much goop.Thank you

  • THANK YOU FRANK

  • WOW! I stumbled across this 3 video series when looking for how to break-in a new little merscham pipe a friend had brought back from Turkey. I started watching the first one and thought "what BS!" but I listened to all 3 and then tried it in my little merscham. Did the 5 lighting thing and it was amaizing that it worked just like he said! I don't think I had enough in the pipe so it wsn't packed as full/tight as what I think his was, but it did seem to burn better and stay lit easier Thanks!

  • Very god!

  • wow this is very great advise. i've been smoking a pipe for about 6 months now and when i pack it i would usually tamp it down with the empty shell casing of a .50 bullet. after a while and plenty of practice i was able to get it down to an art but this is a whole lot simpler. thanks again.

  • Thanks Frank!!!!

  • And I thought smoking pipe was for relaxing. Im getting nervous just trying to remember everything to fill and light. Good instructions however.

  • I use just about this same method. Since I smoke outside regular lighters and matches just won't do the job.

  • This guy is making pipe smoking feel like an olympic sport :)

  • exelente!!!! Muchas Gracias!!!

  • Thank- You sir 4 taking the time 2 do this.

  • Danke! Dont let the others bother you. They are just total idiots. Anyhow- I really enjoyed the video.. See you don't only say to do but you explain why, which is very important.

  • Despite all the really stupid remarks here...this is an intricate yet reliable way to light the pipe.

The German method just happens to be a little more time consuming but makes for a longer lasting, more enjoyable smoke. Kudos to the instructor.

  • Idk why but you got me laffing for this. I've never smoked a pipe (tobacco) but will be switching to pipe from cigarettes soon for reasons of my own. I'm sure i'll remember your videos while finding my own enjoyment from pipe smoking. thanks

  • Danke für die fantastische Anleitung! Ich bin seit einer Woche Pfeifenraucher und habe gestern nach dem Ansehen Deines Videos direkt meine Pfeife auf diese Art gestopft. Wundervoll!

    Gruß aus Hessen

  • What is the best method for lighting when you have a standard butane lighter instead of a torch lighter like he has?

  • matches... The temperature achieved with a torch lighter is far too significant for most fine tobaccos. You will end up destroying flavor with a torch, or a butane lighter... invest in high quality matches.

of course this is just my opinion based on experience.

  • Thanks, for the reply. I've always like using matches to get it going, but didn't like how I had to throw them away afterwards if I was out somewhere smoking my pipe.

  • This enables me to smoke the rest of the bowl right into all ashes. (But, it is not the most pleasant smoke as it tastes a little ashy.)

  • What I do at that point is to remove as much ash as I can by turning the pipe to the side and lightly tapping it on my hand after I have used the scoop part of the tamping tool to loosen the ash. I then use the scoop part of my tamping tool to dig down to the very bottom of the bowl and pull up the tobacco and remaining ash (which intermixes them) and then lightly tamp down again and relight.

  • As you smoke, ash forms on top of the tobacco, which tends to put out the flame. You must tamp LIGHTLY to crush this layer of ash and compact it, then relight. This may happen more than once and when you get down to the last quarter bowl, the ash is so thick that it is hard to go on.

  • Thinking about this some more, I note that he says it may be necessary to relight after the tobacco has been half smoked. This to me, is not good. I know experts don't require a relight. And, I think you can get as good as Frank gets without his method.

  • Unless you're in a contest, relights are part of pipe smoking. "Experts" don't require a relight, they usually require at least a few. The only criteria for successful pipe smoking is enjoyment.

  • @1968eric

Yes, indeed. I almost forgot I enjoy smoking a pipe, what with all the technical aspects of lighting the thing some insist upon. Other parts of life can be detailed; pipe smoking should be a pleasure.

  • Excellent video! Some same he's too wordy, but I think some of us need all the details.

Anyway, this is no miracle cure. I've tried this several times, so far, and it hasn't worked for me yet. I'm not using a torch burner, tho, just a regular flame burner. I wonder if that makes a difference.

I suspect that if your tobacco isn't dry enough you are still going to have problems.

  • your the man! great method

  • Frank, you are the God of Pipe. I will share this with my pipe smoking club.

  • The man's name is not Frank! lol

  • @Jspinoza1 - It isn't? He starts off part 1 by introducing himself as Arnin Frank. At least that's what I heard.

  • thanks frank. u are ingenius

  • I appreciate this method and this video. One question though. I smoke outside and sometimes its hard getting it all lit in 'one second' any advice for outside smoking, or is it all the same? Thanks

  • You're an idiot, are you aware of this?

  • Buddy this is amazing. A gentleman like this is why I smoke a pipe every once in a while, it's classy and relaxing. Good health to you friend!

  • The next step you could do is- edit some book 'Step-by-step of pipe smoking'.Just describe all this process in full! I'd enjoy this masterpiece!

Have a good smoking, poor German guy! I could bring you some Castello or Former or whatever your heart desire to your birthday each year!

  • I wouldn't be surprised about some 'Ass cleaning' Guru! This is my bussiness how do I lighten-up or smoking my pipe! And I definitely are able to buy some new pipe every year! Poor Germans!

  • What type of lighter is this? Does anyone know the brand and model, I would like to try this. thaank you

  • Yes, this is a really good method for packing a pipe! A huge difference: much easier to smoke, better flavour (better hit from nicotine too!). Many thanks!

  • Very nice method of lighting a pipe, the pipe lights much more evenly and it has a much cooler burn to it. Thanks for sharing the information.

  • I hope Frank is still ok: I think his fire alarm was going off for god knows how long. At least he didn't let his burning house distract him from making this excellent vid.

  • Dear Sir:

I tried your method. The tobacco lasted for a longer time and the taste was truly richer.

The smoke and the feeling on my tongue was different; kinder you could say. Even the ashes were more "elegant" and finer.

I have been smoking pipe on a dialy basis for only three weeks. I had smoked before, off and on trough the years and always ended up quitting it. This is the first time I have an experience smoking that allows me to consider it a pleasure to stay.

    I really appreciated it.

  • thanks mate, looking forward to a weekend with a new pipe and book!

  • Thanks for sharing Frank, this method is great !

  • Thank You!!!

  • Awesome, thanks Frank!

  • Thanks, really helpful.

  • Hi Frank, Is this called a turbolighter?

  • Thank you for the very detailed video. I think that the method you show, is maybe the best packing method for the pipe, simple and functional.

  • should a new pipe be packed to the rim or only half way, as some suggest?

  • About half way if it's a briar, which needs some breaking in (5-10 smokes depending on who you ask). The idea is to develop a thin, protective carbon cake within the bowl.

  • Err... 'half way' re: Axbent's question.

  • Frank is the total demi-god of German discipline.

Do it wrong, and you might get the Frank-Spank.

  • I think this is awesome, I have tryed doing the whole "Charing light" waiting a few secs then tamping the lighting again thing i don't know how meny times. After seeing these vids i grabed a cigar duel torch flame lighter packed my pipe useing the frank methond and it went flawlessly. that was the best bowel i have ever had. i know this does not work for comp smokers with the whole 2 match thing for the backyard smoker like my self this is perfect. Thak you frank.

  • Very helpful video. Thank you.

  • Frank Method works like a dream! Thanks for the lesson!

  • u re an excellent teacher!respect!im 20 years old and just bought a pipe, because of you I will know from the beggining how to do it right..greetings from Greece =)

  • man ke gw apo ellada ke tra xekinaw!!!

    ps awasome video

  • Thanks Frank

  • thanks for taking the time to teach the younger ones of us how this works! I hope to keep this tradition alive as long as I am! thanks frank!

  • This method of filling works superbly. However, all that lighting "palaver" as skimmer3554 puts it is indeed unnecessary. Yer man has to do it that way because he uses a torch lighter, something I would NEVER bring anywhere near my cherished pipes. I need two lights after filling with the Frank Method using matches or a butane lighter. First a charring light, followed by a light tamp. The second light takes me to the bottom of the bowl, with only a further tamp needed about half way. Perfect ;)

  • muchas gracias, muy bien explicado.

  • Very interesting, but if you are a competition-smoker you get two (yes!Just TWO!)

matches to light your pipe! After 10 minutes it's "tampers away!" time! If you go out after that you're OUT! This is just too much palaver! No disrespect...

  • ty for taking the time to put this together it's greatly appreciated.

  • thank you very much.

I will enjoy my pipe much more now.

  • Since I've switched to the Frank Method of packing, I have NO problems keeping the pipe lit, and the smoke cool. It has really improved my smoking pleasure. Maybe it's just me, but this method seems hard to screw up. It worked the very first time I used it and the smoke continues to get better with every pack. What I've noticed more than anything is that I no longer get ANY TONGUE BITE. I firmly encourage this method. Thank you Mr. Frank.

  • geez, this guy really cares about pipe smoking. teutonic pedagogy. is he a former prof. of pipology from hiedelberg. thanks for the frank method, frank.

  • Very nice explanation, I will take some of the advise. The only thing I do very very different is that I make the tobbaco in very little "pieces", my english is not good.. i saying that I brake it a lot to make it easier to burn and work with, you never do that? when i use tobbaco just as packed I have to relight several times.

  • Excellent. Very descriptive. I've been hoping for one of these. Thanks!

  • I have smoked tobacco (and only tobacco *glowers sternly about*) from these hookahs before, it is a very cool smoke, no chance of burning, no chance of coughing, very light and easy on the lungs. I smoke a normal tobacco pipe as well, and the smoke from it is so thick that it makes this feel almost like air, which is a downer. Still pleasant over all. The idea of flavouring booze with it is a new one, I will have to mention it to my friends. Sounds interesting.

  • Jingoisticmonarchist,

You aren't supposed to inhale pipe smoke, just hold it in your mouth and release.

  • I like that, 'Jingoisticmonarchist'. Thanks!

  • Very nice video. I just started smoking pipes. I smoked cigars for a few years but I'm starting to like pipes more. I use a tamper to fill it and tamp it wile smoking. I had no idea that there was proper edict to it. Maybe that's why mine keeps going out and makes a sucking sound wile I'm smoking it. I'll use this method next time.

  • ps - I am a rookie pipesmoker and this video is the closest I've had to a lesson. How frequently do you draw on the pipe once it is lit? I used to just keep it in my mouth and puff away.

  • One small sip every 10-15 seconds usually does it for me, if the pipe starts to go out you can increase the rate somewhat (and gently tamp while doing so). Soon enough you learn to control it without having to relight all the time. My smoking time is usually 1.5-2 hours with few, if any relights.

I use a butane lighter, too, but this "burner" thingy doesn't seem like a bad idea at all.

  • Thank you Frank for posting this, it is a totally different piping experience.

  • lso smoke corncobs, so charring and blackening the pipe isn't too big a worry for me. would you still recommend that gizmo?

  • Wow, thanks bud

Oh, stupid question: what the hell's a burner?

I always just used butane lighters. I a

  • The "Burner" is just what we call a "lighter". The lighter Frank uses is a triple-flame torch-style lighter such as the Colibri Triplex. If you use it the way shown you should not have too much of a problem with your pipe, although a regular flame lighter will work well.

  • @dracsspago Dear Sir. Is it necessary to use a gas torch for a 1 second light? Can I use a regular gas lighter? I am having difficulties to light with a regular lighter, because I need more than 1 second to light the pipe. So I am using a gas torch now. Do your method consist in continuing lighting the pipe? Because, before I know your method, I lighted once , twice o three times. Your method seems to cosume a lot of gas. Am I wrong? Do I have to remove the ashes? Thanks in advance! Xande.

  • Comment removed

  • @dracsspago Can the torch-style lighter damage the pipe? I think it is very dangerous to use that type of lighter. It is not safer to use a conventional gas lighter, or matches? Will it work?
