Breaths are VERY commonly choreographed into drum corps shows. Physical punishment is not totally needed in drum corps, but physical conditioning and the realization that you have made the mistake are both absolutely necessary. The precision in music and marching is mind-blowing, do not underestimate it. Not everybody has what it takes to be in a top corps.
I think my band suffered this year because our staff weren't allowed to give physical punishment and so ppl slacked off and our endurance was low. And we had a very physically demanding show..
I'm not trying to bash marching band but I'm about to march my 5th, and final, season of corps and it's like the difference between dial-up and broadband. Sure we run cause we being punished sometimes, but we also run just as much because we know it will make us more physically fit to march, in turn makes the marching aspect of the show more comfortable and let's us perform during a show as opposed to survive and when we perform better music usually get better with that performance vibe.
@wdbard I think from the ranges it presents, it fills quite nicely. And this is from a musical stand point too. Also I'm an orchestral string player (Cello), choir queer (Tenor), band nerd (Tenor Drums during marching season, and tuba during concert season), and drum corps jock (Tenor Drums).
@wdbard Can I just say that strings, compared to drum corps, sound completely empty. Not saying there's anything wrong with string instruments, just that you can't beat a good brass sound.
@phantomtrumpet92 Oh, I totally agree that a good brass sound is fantastic. Just, I don't think a person's musicality is showcased well when they seem to blare a lot. Have you ever been to a good orchestral concert, with a professional orchestra? Those guys can play a heck of a lot better than any drum corps musician I've ever heard. Just my 2 cents.
@wdbard You can't really base musicianship off of a drum corps show either though, especially if you're going to relate it to an orchestral setting. These kids are making amazingly pure music... for having run around on a field holding their breath and blowing their chops for 9 minutes prior. Of course a bunch of professionals sitting on stage not really worrying about who's breathing where, or where they have to be in the next an count are going to sound far better.
@JLWorks You're saying orchestral musicians don't have to worry about who's breathing where? Yeah, right! They probably worry about that more than people do when playing marching band shows. And orchestral pros tank up and put out a lot more air than marching band players do. That's just a fact. How are they making "pure" music? They're getting yelled at, forced to do push-ups, run laps, get to attention like they're in the military or something, wear goofy uniforms, all for the sake of music?
@wdbard sure, whatever. That's still beside the point. My point was that it's completely unfair to compare the musicianship of a person hauling balls on a field in a goofy uniform to a person sitting in an auditorium wearing a tux. Address that first. As for your last question, no it is not for the sake of music. It's for the sake of entertainment. No one is forcing them to do anything.
@JLWorks Hauling balls? What balls? And music IS entertainment. No one may be forcing them to do anything, but consider this: classical musicians get MORE work done musically without push-ups and laps and all that crap, than marching bandies do WITH that stuff. So it's obviously not necessary.
@wdbard Way to avoid my original point yet again. Entertainment encompasses music AND marching. And all that "crap" is not to help them play better, you're right that would be dumb. It's to help them prepare for the physical demand of the activity. When we want to get musically better we get into an arc and rehearse.
@JLWorks I've done marching band before though without attending the "band camp" and without getting in trouble to deserve push-ups, etc., and I was physically fine. It's physically more demanding to play horn than to march on a field.
@RebornGames503 That's an opinion.... You can't tell people that it's a fact that something is better than something else when it's a matter of preference.
why does the Phantom Regiment always have the best music?? why do people not like the Phantom Regiment? and most importantly, why do they keep losing with such amazing shows? so many questions, so little answers....
@trumpetman923 well first they've got to do 8 minutes of jogging while holding their breath before they get to that part haha. Without making it sound like they're running or losing intensity lol
@TopherBroaddus That is correct sir....I watched myself as I was curious about the step size. It is varied; as it has to be to get from point A to point B. Firebird is Fantastic!
woa, if i counted right, those mellie held that note for 12 measures...or they just covered up their breaths amazingly, either way thats a hell of a set of lungs!
@euphoniumification ok dude the very beginning of the video? its definently euph. played it on a baritone and ive seen the multi cam version which im pretty sure is on youtube

CC and PR actually play songs all the way through their shows. thats one reason theyre both crowd favorites and another reason why they rarely win. thats the conclusion ive come to, theres also a lot of politics involved in DCI
i know rite. this show got 4th place! idk. i think the cavies don't play enough music and do too much running around and hissing and yelling. I don't really understand BD. i just don't get it. they always get top 2 but i never find their shows anything really special. i guess its like either ur a bd person or not. pr and cc don't really always get what they deserve, but same goes for other corps like bluecoats and scvg. what ev
Dude tubamatt you just spole every word for me. I think phantoms drill wasnt as good as it could have been. but thats the drill writers fault. but ya pr and cc dont get alot of credit. and when bd won in 07 i was like huh? what kind of show is swirly things with screaming tpets. idk i mean congrats to them in 07 but i wish phantom would have placed higher
Ya I agree about the running part. It looked unorganized, I know it was hard as hell, but I wish they could have ran to make it look more organized. However I never thought about it going from organized to chaos. Hmm good point Tubamatt
P.s. I was at championships 2007 and saw this show performed. They should have gotten 3rd. The cadets should have gotten first (even though im a hard corp blue devils fan), the blue devils second and phantom 3rd. I dont know why, but I loved the cadets show in 07.
absolutely amazing. I just wish that the last couple of bars were more balanced throughout the band. Not sure if it was phantom or just the video. But so fulfilling unless you can here all the notes of the chord starting from the low tubas to the high trumpets.
lol our band did this song....and we did the last set they did lol. it think that was actually the hardest set we did trying to get everone in the right spot but it payed off with straight 1s!
I love this show from Phantom Regiment! They play it so well and look good while doing it. I love the support they put behind it. The Sound SO AMAZING!
maybe I caught youtube at a good moment last night, because the video was nearly crystal clear (not so much right now). Great recording, though! Thanks!
I love the announcer at the end. "Under the direction of Rick Valenzuela, the Phantom Regimentdfjskdhflkajhdslfjkhasdlfjhalsdjkflaskdjf!!!"

i love the jazz run and all but i dont like the path they run, it seems unorganized. but still, probably my favorite part of the show
Dmully 3 years ago
i think the point of that was choas to organization
tubamatt642 3 years ago
well i know that but idk if i liked them running in a follow the leader fashion.
Dmully 3 years ago
Ya I agree about the running part. It looked unorganized, I know it was hard as hell, but I wish they could have ran to make it look more organized. However I never thought about it going from organized to chaos. Hmm good point Tubamatt

Dmully 3 years ago

To play this song while running and without disturbing the stablelity of the tone IS HARD!!!!!!

kittykat540 3 years ago
With the straight 1s comment that means you must be from Texas right?
yman4444 3 years ago

maybe I caught youtube at a good moment last night, because the video was nearly crystal clear (not so much right now). Great recording, though! Thanks!
