  • I love the announcer at the end. "Under the direction of Rick Valenzuela, the Phantom Regimentdfjskdhflkajhdslfjkhasdlfjhalsdjkflaskdjf!!!"

  • Friend from SCV here with a general response to most posters:

Breaths are VERY commonly choreographed into drum corps shows. Physical punishment is not totally needed in drum corps, but physical conditioning and the realization that you have made the mistake are both absolutely necessary. The precision in music and marching is mind-blowing, do not underestimate it. Not everybody has what it takes to be in a top corps.

  • Lol, marching band people talking about marching band musicality on a drum corps' video.

  • It's like 1 mello is holding the note from 1:55-2:10 !!!!!!

  • Oh and BTW this is one of the best closers in the history of DCI. Not necessarily the best show in my opinion of course

  • I think my band suffered this year because our staff weren't allowed to give physical punishment and so ppl slacked off and our endurance was low. And we had a very physically demanding show..

  • I'm not trying to bash marching band but I'm about to march my 5th, and final, season of corps and it's like the difference between dial-up and broadband. Sure we run cause we being punished sometimes, but we also run just as much because we know it will make us more physically fit to march, in turn makes the marching aspect of the show more comfortable and let's us perform during a show as opposed to survive and when we perform better music usually get better with that performance vibe.

  • @ScreamoXxGirl What about them?

  • Best closer ever hands down. They play it so well it's Magnificent

  • BEST FUCKING SHOW EVER THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE

  • My high school is playing that this year, however not nearly as amazing! I look to this video for inspiration.

  • My band director is a trumpet player in this video and I can't believe it! This is so awesome! What happened to her?

  • @aknpler123 Dude, your band director must be like 25. Not old at all. For what school?

  • @BeatDrumSticks Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas. Her name is Kelly Wykoff.

  • @aknpler123 Why is that a big deal? Almost anyone could do this.

  • I wish our mellophones could hold that last note out like they do.. but when we do it we waver in and out.... siigghhh.

  • i think i'm going to go practice my trumpet now...

  • holy.....crap...

  • Oh look, there's a hole in the contras. Must be the horn sergeant who got busted for weed. lol

  • @euphmmx it's probably the chick that broke her leg.

  • @aks0227 Um....nuuuuope. Definitely has to be the horn sergeant who got kicked out of the corps.

  • I got so many chills

  • So, jazz running and playing that.. all at the same time... win.

  • It's not often a YouTube video gives you goosebumps. But it's very often that a Phantom Regiment video gives you goosebumps.

  • Lol 79, 89, 03, 04, and 07....

  • @alildrumhappy They're playing classical music, and it sounds empty without the strings.

  • @wdbard I disagree on that. But man this is drum corps. No woodwind. Just brass, percussion, and guard

  • @KonguAwesome And from the musical standpoint, just brass and percussion.

  • @wdbard I think from the ranges it presents, it fills quite nicely. And this is from a musical stand point too. Also I'm an orchestral string player (Cello), choir queer (Tenor), band nerd (Tenor Drums during marching season, and tuba during concert season), and drum corps jock (Tenor Drums).

  • @wdbard Can I just say that strings, compared to drum corps, sound completely empty. Not saying there's anything wrong with string instruments, just that you can't beat a good brass sound.

  • @phantomtrumpet92 Oh, I totally agree that a good brass sound is fantastic. Just, I don't think a person's musicality is showcased well when they seem to blare a lot. Have you ever been to a good orchestral concert, with a professional orchestra? Those guys can play a heck of a lot better than any drum corps musician I've ever heard. Just my 2 cents.

  • @wdbard sorry to bust your bubble there but no

  • @RebornGames503 What are you saying no to?

  • @wdbard You can't really base musicianship off of a drum corps show either though, especially if you're going to relate it to an orchestral setting. These kids are making amazingly pure music... for having run around on a field holding their breath and blowing their chops for 9 minutes prior. Of course a bunch of professionals sitting on stage not really worrying about who's breathing where, or where they have to be in the next an count are going to sound far better.

  • @JLWorks You're saying orchestral musicians don't have to worry about who's breathing where? Yeah, right! They probably worry about that more than people do when playing marching band shows. And orchestral pros tank up and put out a lot more air than marching band players do. That's just a fact. How are they making "pure" music? They're getting yelled at, forced to do push-ups, run laps, get to attention like they're in the military or something, wear goofy uniforms, all for the sake of music?

  • @wdbard sure, whatever. That's still beside the point. My point was that it's completely unfair to compare the musicianship of a person hauling balls on a field in a goofy uniform to a person sitting in an auditorium wearing a tux. Address that first. As for your last question, no it is not for the sake of music. It's for the sake of entertainment. No one is forcing them to do anything.

  • @JLWorks Hauling balls? What balls? And music IS entertainment. No one may be forcing them to do anything, but consider this: classical musicians get MORE work done musically without push-ups and laps and all that crap, than marching bandies do WITH that stuff. So it's obviously not necessary.

  • @wdbard Way to avoid my original point yet again. Entertainment encompasses music AND marching. And all that "crap" is not to help them play better, you're right that would be dumb. It's to help them prepare for the physical demand of the activity. When we want to get musically better we get into an arc and rehearse.

  • @JLWorks I've done marching band before though without attending the "band camp" and without getting in trouble to deserve push-ups, etc., and I was physically fine. It's physically more demanding to play horn than to march on a field.

  • @RebornGames503 No what?

  • @wdbard drum corps sound 5x better than a orchestra

  • @RebornGames503 Care to explain how/why?

  • @RebornGames503 That's an opinion.... You can't tell people that it's a fact that something is better than something else when it's a matter of preference.

  • Where's the strings?!

  • @wdbard what strings?

  • @2:18 i totally flipped out!

  • MY FAVORITE CORPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • honestly, this performance represents my love and passion for the musical arts

  • why does the Phantom Regiment always have the best music?? why do people not like the Phantom Regiment? and most importantly, why do they keep losing with such amazing shows? so many questions, so little answers....

  • @MrCharliebush they are my favorite fucking marching band

  • I'd like to see anybody who thinks drum corps isn't a sport do what phantom regiment does here from 1:33-1:50, then say it isn't a sport.

What they're doing there is so difficult and ridiclously amazing and so many people don't appreciate that, it's really sad.

  • @trumpetman923 well first they've got to do 8 minutes of jogging while holding their breath before they get to that part haha. Without making it sound like they're running or losing intensity lol

  • @trumpetman923

actually bro i know it seems bad ass at first but if you look it's not even a full run, it's only 6-to5

    so relax.

  • @yuvizal It actually is varied. No one is marching anything less than a 5 to 5. Mellos were typically at a 4 to 5 or 3 to 5.

  • @TopherBroaddus That is correct sir....I watched myself as I was curious about the step size. It is varied; as it has to be to get from point A to point B. Firebird is Fantastic!

  • oh my god! i am excited to see these guys when i compete

  • OMG I GOT CHILLS FOR DAYS

    is this firebird suite?

  • i came

  • gives me chills

  • FIREBIRD HORN SOLO WOOOOHOOOO!!!

  • woa, if i counted right, those mellie held that note for 12 measures...or they just covered up their breaths amazingly, either way thats a hell of a set of lungs!

  • @cathunter123 i actually think its a bit longer. i am amazed though.

  • @cathunter123 Seeing as how there are 16 mellos it would be pretty easy for them to stagger breath and not let the crowd hear it.

  • fuck yeah

  • That is the fucking shit right there. Well done.

  • ive been watchin so many phantom regiment videos...just watching this video helps me think about how to correctly jazz run like a beast!

  • the mellos omg im scared at how long they hold that note at the end it keeps going and going

  • geez! i love them.

    -

not only do they play canon as a warm up, they tag firebird on the end of it. what could be more heavenly?!

  • I thought that was the most graceful, well designed drill I have ever seen! I am wondering where the heck I was in 2007...OH yea....now I know.

  • 2:15 - 2:20 cavies '02 ripoff but opposite direction anyone? hahaha nicely executed though great show.

  • @Drumbreak1 I see what you're getting at but they did the move in a different way. When the Cavaliers did that in '02 they hopped. In this they spun.

  • @Drumbreak1

Frameworks, yes yes. Haha. I thought the same thing.

    Love Firebird

  • @Drumbreak1 They jumped in frameworks though.

  • My Favorite Show in 2007... You guys deserved so much more!!!

This version of Firebird was such an incredible Closer! Amazingly executed!!!

My Blood Boils from 1:00 end... SMOKED Everybody that year!!!

You Know It!!! We Know It!!! DCI Remembered in 2008 LOL

  • Mello's from heaven.....

  • MELLOPHONES! OMG!

  • mellos at 1:52 always give me chills

  • Wasnt the horn solo a flugelhorn solo? Sounded to high to be a euph and to much like a trumpet to be a mello. I couldnt tell form the video.

  • the solo at the very beginning of the video? its definantly euph

  • @euphoniumification No, im pretty sure its a flugelhorn. I play it, and euph.

  • @euphoniumification ok dude the very beginning of the video? its definently euph. played it on a baritone and ive seen the multi cam version which im pretty sure is on youtube

  • @euphoniumification ok dude the very beginning of the video? its definently euph. played it on a baritone and ive seen the multi cam version which im pretty sure is on youtube

  • I saw this live and this was by far my favorite show that year!! i also liked crown's show but again.. this was my fav!

  • Where was this played and how late in the season was it?

  • finals day run - mission viejo, CA

  • this is easily one of the best closers of all time

  • @InfernoX1994 No it is the best closer of all time done by a drum corp :)

  • My God...that jazz run...

  • lol, that wasn't a jazz run... that was a full on sprint with amazing tone control!

  • haha very true! and you gotta imagine what thats like after marching a whole show.

  • really its not as impressive as it look. like hands down phantom is the best corps. but their jazz running isnt that impressive. on the multi cam you can see theyre only jazz running to keep tempo, because theyre only marching at like a 6 to 5

  • No I understand that, what I'm more impressed with is that this is at the very end of an already physically demanding show yet they still managed to produce one of the best sounds that I have ever heard during a jazz run.

  • @grumbo1563 it is impressive, and it also happens to be my favorite ending, but i think the cadets 09 ending was MUCH more demanding

  • 'Sweet Jesus!!!!

  • Was this what they presented at Finals, or was it changed?

  • 0:52 Gives me chills every time!!!!! This was the first show of PR that i ever saw back in 07' in san antonio live. I have gone back to SA ever since just to see them and BD. I love PR to death and someday i hope to make it as a Pit member. I have a lot of time until im 21. But i swear to the great gods of drum corps that i will be part of the greatest drum corps that every existed, well PR and BD at least. lol

    Thanks for Posting!!!!!

  • 0:52 I had an eargasm. Phantom Regiment is my new favorite corps.

  • This is easily one of my favorite shows of all time, I especially love the power of the low brass all the way through, and the drum break in the third movement is so goddamn clean, and the entire closer gives me chills it's amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • You're a dumbass.

  • you sir fail, and thats something coming from me.

  • 52 and on i love

  • Still some sound quality issues, most notably on the final chord with sounds poking through, but ya gotta love PR :)

  • i think it should have remained like this in the finals

  • 1:14 The flag work until the end was easily some of the best designed work of that summer!! 2007 Great!!1 Love the staging!

  • that solo in the beginning is so beautiful!! this whole video is one of my favorite performances of Firebird by any corps/orchestra/concert band ever.

  • 2:18 - 2:28 gives me chills

  • Then entire second half of this video gives me chills....

  • 1:30.....running....so hot

  • Stravinsky's birthday is today i have a feeling he would love to hear this rendition of fire bird!!

  • Im goin to see them July 10th in Orlando!!

  • I'm going to go see them July 11th ... I can't freaking wait!!!!!

  • Im goin to see them july 17 in Dallas... I been of fan of Phantom Regiment since my freashman year of High School Marching band, and I still havn't seen them live... Im sure it will be great!!!... =p

  • you will absolutely LOVE them. Even when they don't place as high, you will SEE how much of a crowd favorite they are. They just don't dazzle you with GE. THESE CATS PLAY!!!!!!!!!

  • I feel that Phantom Regiment should of be scored higher that year. It was a really good show...

  • my thoughts exactly

  • me being the kind of person who thinks that orchestral music on the field is questionable found this show very moving and bone-chilling. I wish they wouldve won in 2007 or placed, but am happy they won last season. Only PR can pull off orchestral music and make it sound great.

  • I would have to say SCV has done a great job with orchestral music in the past

  • I agree....

  • perhaps the running was supossed to look like a flock of birds

  • yeah. i got my hands on the world championship dvd and it had designer comments and it was supposed to be birds flocking to powerlines or something.

  • Oh wow. It makes sense now! thank you so much

  • Actrully....The is a difference....Marching band consist of brass, woodwind and percussion....Where else drum and bugle corps only consists of brass and percussion....Unlike some marching band (Including my school's one) don't use marching horns..Such as trombones and concert french-horns...In drum corps...Everything is is designed especially for drum corps..The marching mellophone for example...Soo get your facts right....

  • he idnt say marching band he just said band....

  • To nkumquatn:

All drum corps is marching band, but not all marching band is drum corps. If you're a brass musician, percussionist or guard/dance enthusiast and you're still within the DCI age limits, you should try it. You'll see what everybody's talking about.

  • CC and PR actually play songs all the way through their shows. thats one reason theyre both crowd favorites and another reason why they rarely win. thats the conclusion ive come to, theres also a lot of politics involved in DCI

  • This is in my opion almost as well performed of a show as Spartacus

  • Too true! I loved this show.

  • phantom and crown are the most underscored (dont think thats a word) corps

  • i know rite. this show got 4th place! idk. i think the cavies don't play enough music and do too much running around and hissing and yelling. I don't really understand BD. i just don't get it. they always get top 2 but i never find their shows anything really special. i guess its like either ur a bd person or not. pr and cc don't really always get what they deserve, but same goes for other corps like bluecoats and scvg. what ev

  • Dude tubamatt you just spole every word for me. I think phantoms drill wasnt as good as it could have been. but thats the drill writers fault. but ya pr and cc dont get alot of credit. and when bd won in 07 i was like huh? what kind of show is swirly things with screaming tpets. idk i mean congrats to them in 07 but i wish phantom would have placed higher

  • @kingofengles underrated?

  • @kingofengles under-rated/underscored doesn't even BEGIN to talk about them. especially crown in06, 07, and 08.

  • @kingofengles and the bluecoats

  • @X5Y0Z3 Not to forget the scouts

  • Are you from Frisco Wakeland?

  • I LOVE PHANTOM REGIMENT!!!

I wish i was that good!!!

  • I LUV IT

  • and its not your last either

  • 1:30 is god.

  • actually this was at my high school. they stayed there before championships. so this was just a few days before that.

  • i love the jazz run and all but i dont like the path they run, it seems unorganized. but still, probably my favorite part of the show

  • i think the point of that was choas to organization

  • well i know that but idk if i liked them running in a follow the leader fashion.

  • Ya I agree about the running part. It looked unorganized, I know it was hard as hell, but I wish they could have ran to make it look more organized. However I never thought about it going from organized to chaos. Hmm good point Tubamatt

  • i <3 contras

  • lol, i bet theres going to be a few comments giving you shit for saying "dci band" rather than saying a drum core

  • haha, yup....

and you're getting shit because it's corps, not core

  • i know its corps but its said core, so thats how i say it lol

  • youre getting shit for saying core instead of corps

  • im outta breath wqhen im done with my show in high school

i can imagine what it be like after that!

  • they should've beaten the cavies in 07, maybe even the cadets......

  • awsome!!!!

  • the contras need to do the leg thing in the power wedge..lol

  • P.s. I was at championships 2007 and saw this show performed. They should have gotten 3rd. The cadets should have gotten first (even though im a hard corp blue devils fan), the blue devils second and phantom 3rd. I dont know why, but I loved the cadets show in 07.

  • absolutely amazing. I just wish that the last couple of bars were more balanced throughout the band. Not sure if it was phantom or just the video. But so fulfilling unless you can here all the notes of the chord starting from the low tubas to the high trumpets.

  • To play this song while running and without disturbing the stablelity of the tone IS HARD!!!!!!

  • to me, this finale is the most emotion i can get without having to cuddle afterward

  • Best closer of 2007!

  • lol our band did this song....and we did the last set they did lol. it think that was actually the hardest set we did trying to get everone in the right spot but it payed off with straight 1s!

  • With the straight 1s comment that means you must be from Texas right?

  • actually no. im from Louisiana. Why Texas??? lol

  • i love firebird suite. we're doing it for our show this year :)

  • i love how the mellophones run in more ways than one in this section of the show!

and then there is that note.

  • I love this show from Phantom Regiment! They play it so well and look good while doing it. I love the support they put behind it. The Sound SO AMAZING!

  • beautiful brass sound and good coice of songs.. they sould have got 2nd or 3rd..

  • beautiful brass sound and good coice of songs.. they sould have got 2nd or 3rd..

  • maybe I caught youtube at a good moment last night, because the video was nearly crystal clear (not so much right now). Great recording, though! Thanks!

  • best quality rehearsal video I've ever seen on youtube... wow! what's the secret?

  • its not the video thats quality -its the corps.
