  • @noedodson well why not? RP is an OGBYN and a strict constitutionalist. He believes that from conception to death, you are a person. I'm in disagreement with him philosophically but respect his beliefs since all these things are handled at the state-level (laws on legality). Being an anti-state libertarian, I believe that no authority should declare what a woman may or may not do with her own body (fearing that state policemen would arrest women who perform back-alley abortions).

  • @kmelfina ...or State Police arresting a woman who had a miscarriage because her neighbor called 911 and said, "I think she aborted that baby on purpose." Note, that Dr. Paul is in favor of the "morning after pill," which women could take to guard against unwanted pregnancy. Dr. Paul rightly states, "...a woman wouldn't even know if she was pregnant." Now wouldn't this common sense solution; i.e., make the "morning after pill" available give women absolute choice?

  • @fntsmk interesting thought, but never accounted for arrests due to miscarriages since they're natural phenomenons. I know strict Catholic friends who go for a Gingrich/Santorum ticket for illegal abortions/birth control pills on the federal level lol. The only message that brought me to like Ron Paul is this, "you can't legislate morality. ... human beings by their own accord, no amount of legislation or list of laws is going to change that" (which actually came from Abraham Lincoln).

  • @kmelfina Exactly right. No one can legislate morality. Folks who drink will drink. Folks who smoke pot will smoke pot. Folks who solicit prostitution will solicit prostitution. That said, which is the smarter course: Spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year on the prosecution and incarceration of folks who smoke pot and "buy a date;" both actions of which harm no one else, or "de-criminalize" those actions at the Federal level, and let the States MAKE Tax revenue off these things?

  • @kmelfina I don't agree with that statement (that from conception you are a person, there are hundred of thousands of sperms in my balls and they sure as hell aren't people). Anyway, I think that FREEDOM is about giving women the choice to have or not have a baby, neither the state nor the country should tell them what to do. It's like if the federal government forced people to have babies, it's ridiculous.

But my point is: I find it quite incoherent for a Libertarian to be a pro-life in a legal matter.     Every baby's unique human life begins with their conception, the first moment at which they had a father and a mother. Killing that baby via abortion, at any point between the baby's conception and the baby's birth, is murder. Each baby's Right to Life supersedes anyone's interest in killing that baby.

    Rights are hierarchical: a person's right to go where they want is superseded by your right to not have the walk into your house in the middle of the night.

Technically killing a cow is murder too, it has a mother and a father and is technically smarter and more conscious than a baby, and yet that doesn't bother you at all. They also know Ron Paul is an Obstetrician, so they were gonna skip the abortion question.     Military is meant to protect ourselves and our alies from those who would do us harm, that is a God-given right.

    The Death penalty however should be reserved only for those whom are a clear and present threat to all of society. Saddam's execution was justified because he was still threat, even while imprisoned. But most of our death-row inmates have no backing or means of escaping, they're no threat.

    1. We need the fleet we have to protect our trade routes, we do 94% of our trade through them.

    These trade routes have 7 choke points, two of them in the Persian gulf, both threatened by Iran, who has attacked ships there before.

    2. Our allies are all over the world, and we have pacts to help defend them. Japan itself looks upon us as a counter point to N. Korea and China.

It seems most practical to try to get the Republican nomination because (1) Ron Paul was a republican before the neocons took over (2) Obama is gonna be the democratic nominee this time around, so Ron Paul would get clobbered if he tried to primary Obama. (3) the system is biased against 3rd parties so he should try his best to get the nomination of one of the two major parties first.

  • I have a 2 year old son with Spina Bifida and will never walk. Stem cell technology could most likely change my sons circumstance.. Stem cell was not mentioned in this debate and I'm willing to bet the mighty Catholic Santorum would be the biggest opponent to stem cell research. I'm also going to bet if it were one of his kids that couldn't walk and knew stem cell technology would make his child walk he would feel differently.

  • I'm sorry for you and your son. Can't they get stem cells from umbilical cords? Do they need to have aborted fetuses to get stem cells? My brother has MS and this was a big issue for him when they first started talking about this technology to improve his condition. But of course, nothing has ever come of it, he's pretty much going to end up in a nursing home until he dies. I hope the future is kinder to your son, you'd think with all the technology we have something could be done.
