  • I really do love that one! It's like swimming around an idea, never telling what you basically want to say... nevertheless leaving in your audience's heart the sweet taste of a shivering sky...

  • i always listen to this when i am getting inspired to sing or be creative..etc. one of my fav. jazz pieces that never fails to put me in a great mood! he had inspiration so original that he tapped into..wish he was still here...would love to sing with him!...

  • It's more than jazz, transcends soul -- his music is in a category of its own.

  • Nothing like a little organized dissonance.

  • I can not stop watching it!

  • @goe234 if you slow down the song and listen at 0.34 what he does is play 2 keys one after the other in very very quick succession to create the pitch bend effect. Effin amazing!

  • The Monk is the master of dissonance and syncopation.

  • @JuliusCzar0 : No, Les Dawson was the greatest, Monk only ever came second!

  • I cannot adore this song enough. What passion and energy he brings to the piano. Makes the piano soar through this song, juttering and flipping on it's way but always sounds graceful in the end... Masterclass.

  • Monk is from another planet

  • I don't know if I could ever get tired of this song.

  • b missing in brilliant

  • love the lemon and lemonade analogy.rilliant just like the music @tinfood

  • how does he do this pitch bending on the piano? or is it something with the recording?? i'd appreciate it if someone could explain this

  • @goe234 Yeah , it's the tape that got stretched at some points

  • Comment removed

  • @Robinexs it actually adds an amazing effect, and goes perfectly with monk's playing

  • 36 unevolved .... i ADORE .. where is that maJik button!

  • 36 people are miserable human beings. seriously how can a person not enjoy this music.

  • UN GENIO GENIAL, VALGA LA REDUNDANCIA !!

  • He would randomly get up and dance sometimes. Look at his vid of blue monk. Thats a good one

  • Who's playing? When was this recording made?

  • can anyone send me tabs or something so i can learn to play this?

  • @Notic28 If you want to learn it you gotta learn it by ear! Try downloading the audio with one method or another, and slow it down somehow. Listen to it a few dozen times at half speed and full speed, try playing along, and you'll figure it out eventually! Best of luck.

  • @somedrummerkid Oh and try and sing the notes while he plays them, and while you play them.

  • I love this version, makes me feel like midnight eventhough is daylight

  • La primera vez que escucho a Thelonious!!! la putamare, es alucinante!!!

  • We love you Thelonious, you beautiful genius!

  • Slick hat

  • God on a piano. beautiful.

  • ingeniously crazy!!!!

  • I love the spikey originality of Monk which is somewhat anarchic in style. It hardly needs saying - A jazz icon.

  • my dad was a lover of jazz this is what i was exposed to mid 60s to 70s those tunes stayed with me my dads favorite was take five by dave brubeck,i love miles a night in tunisia, the collaboration of dizzy and joe cuba titled mateka, eddy harris classic titled cold duck time and real compared to what all the above are classics, miles a song for my father, and a host of other old time artist im very passionate about jazz that all i listen to to this day my dad left me hundreds of classics tunes.

  • @0rganium da

  • @0rganium сам ты обезьяна!!!

  • Happy Born Day.

  • search on youtube (GSA "Project Funk Jam"/ "All Blues")

  • DAMMMM

  • Only Jazz players can sound like they're playing totally off key, yet make it sound awesome. It's like they take those lemon notes and make lemonade out of it

  • @TinFood What a great line!

  • This is my absolute favorite recording of a jazz piano piece - ever. You can feel him reach out to the edge of the familiar, and step out onto new ground of what has never been played before, and even what he has ever tried before. It's so experimental and alive - conscious, thoughtful, purposeful creation in the moment. I LOVE it. Gracias por compartirlo con todos!

  • he does it with such ease,

  • Ever notice how his harmonies are somewhat like Ellington's? Is there anybody more fun to watch play than Mr Monk? Like his mind and body are one. So inventive, so much soul. I love everything I've ever heard by him.

  • A true original. Only a handful of great musicians come along in a great while, Monk was one of them!

  • I think if you're creative and incredibly skilled at composing, you're much more 'technical' than someone who can merely play at a higher speed than you or improvise well. T. Monk was the greatest jazz piano player for that reason, Art Tatum, on the other hand, by far the most 'skilful'.

  • Breathtaking

  • I don't consider Monk to be incredibly technically skilled, but he was incredibly creative and knowledgeable. No one's brain works like his did. A true genius.

  • @zmanofwar3 I agree good point.

  • I agree good point.

  • I got so lost in that song...amazing.

  • Wow!!!!!Extremely nice!!!!

  • Wow. amazing jep a really grounded and soulful jazzfoot! what a beat! love it!

  • A true artist cuz he never played it the same way twice.

  • Just love that Bb7 flat 5 chord!

  • i really love the way he feels the music as he moves his feet.

  • Primero escuchas a Thelonius, despues intentas comprenderlo, luego tratas de aprender sus frases....,finalmente descubres que tu cabeza ya nunca mas volvera a estar en el mismo lugar y que tus conceptos cambiaron para siempre.

  • where's the "replay" button? I wanna listen to him for hours, and hours... until midnight, or more...

  • ‎...I watched a documentary on him and I've been a fan ever since...

  • Fuck yes 1110000th viewer!

  • Deuses, coincidência divina ou nao: seguido do video que amo <3 do Thelonious M.me aparece a possibilidade de abrir o video da cantora cuja voz e interpretaçao mais estou curtindo no momento, AmyW.?? I SAID IN BR. PORTUGUESE: GODS, COINCIDENCE OR NOT: FOLLOWING MY BELOVED THELONIOUS M. VIDEO IT APPEARS THE POSSIBILIY FOR OPENING THE VIDEO FROM THE SINGER, WHOSE VOICE AND INTERPRETATION I ENJOY MOST TO HEAR AT THE MOMENT...! ;-)

  • Monk saw music totally different from anyone in the world and this is how he expressed himself.

  • How can you not like this.

  • @heymama1 I don't know, my friend. Beats me.

  • @heymama1 You'll have to be an ardent lover of jazz. Also, you must have a true understanding and appreciation of Jazz theory. I grew up on Thelonious, John Coltrane, Dizzy, West Montgomery, Miles Davis and many other true jazz greats. If you've really never been exposed to this kind of jazz before, then I understand how it puzzles you. Ask yourself, how much do you really know about jazz and this will most likely answer your own question. I absolutely love jazz and Thelo is the best!

  • FantasyForte, i highly suggest Wes Montgomery, as well as Ella Fitzgerald's appreciations of 'Round Midnight. They are truly great. :)

  • Thelonious Monk, eu gosto da maneira que ele se diverte.

  • That's some good stuff!

  • men also the camera movement is incredible

  • increible musico, nunca habia visto alguien tan matematico para ejecutar un instrumento, increible....

  • PQP...incrivel esta versao

  • guitarharmonybflatk

  • So I just started to listening to this music, any artist/song suggestions?

  • @Salukiham420

search fat waller also search STRIDE PIANO

  • @Salukiham420 find a good jazz guitarist to listen to

  • Que fino é o jazz de Thelonious Monk !

  • UAU!!! Demais!

  • Espectacular

  • amoooooooooo I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Ich liebe es einfach!

  • I don't want to be disrespectful, but to me, that music can most aptly be described as primitive. He is like arbitrarily hitting the keys like a kid just took a few lessons to play the piano and now trying to amuse himself/herself by improvising at the expense of annoying his/her parents with this cacophony.

  • @cagdasdk I don't mean to be disrespectful either but maybe a decent understanding of music would help ease your reservations. I would love to meet the kid who plays like this, he would be a prodigy. There is so much soul and emotion, and so many intricacies in the chords thrown in during improvisation along with all of the 'blue notes' it's amazing. Maybe you could try to learn some theory and play some jazz and it would be helpful?

  • @gCuezy

you don't mean to be disrespectful?~~~!!!! i'm a jazz pianist. Monk had a very unique and weird style. yeah, i hear what you're sayin', but that was the charm of it, digggggggggggggg?

  • @Mrshoelace77 I feel you... my comment was actually a response to the guy/gal who said that this music can only be described as 'primitive' and 'arbitrary' like a 'kid hitting random keys.' Monk is a genius in my eyes.

  • @gCuezy "His timing was so ill...every comedian is a stickler for timing, and Thelonious Monk was off time yet perfectly on time, you should study it if your an aspiring comedian or musician." ~ Dave Chappelle

  • @Salukiham420

And THAT is what makes Dave Chappelle a stand-out of stand-up. Guy has soul.

  • @cagdasdk Shows how much you know about one of the greatest American composers and influential pianists of the 20th century.

  • I get an erection every time I hear Monk play a note.

  • nice

  • 帽子かわええ!

  • I've always loved his music but never actually seen any footage of him. I was reading But Beautiful by Jeff Dyer (amazing book, a must read for any Jazz fans) and it said that what you missed in listening to him you pick up watching him, and its absolutely true, I now have an even greater understanding of him for having seen footage. Amazing guy!

  • Knows exactly what he wants to do, when to do it,, it all comes to him effortlessly.

  • There are not words adequate to describe this music- it's like a steam flowing through a forest halfway up a mountain. See, told you.

  • A true genious as Bird

  • ..THIS IS COOL..BUT SOMEBODY POST MILT JACKSON'S VERSION..YOU KNOW THE XYLOPHONIST/VIBES GUY THAT USE TO ROCK WITH MONK,MILES & THEM..THANX..

  • The original, the best, and the only truly great version of round midnight.

  • @FantasyForte Yup, even Miles Davis took years before he got TM's approval for his own version, and it's still not a very good take on the tune.

  • @FantasyForte Yessss! at last someone said what i always feared of saying, u know this particular piece is done by Bach standards! I mean it's done! no more versions please,

  • @FantasyForte Dizzy Gillespie performed a great rendition - you would love.

  • @FantasyForte This version is definitely the shit, but are you saying that the renditions by Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Pass, and Dexter Gordon aren't truly great?

  • @DrDavidHowler and stanley jordan, don't forget him

  • @DrDavidHowler no one "smings" harder and has better timing, yes smings because the w swung upside down.

  • Essa música é pra ouvir a vida inteira / e ai vem à máxima: você nunca ouvira a mesma música.

  • I'm back for another dose.

  • Comment removed

  • I was not born in wrong decade, but wrong century.

  • monk just looks fucking cool...I think I'm going to cop his style

  • @1234567890101

Stop biting. It ain't cool now and never was!!!!

  • @ciremfuch1

    thanks, dad

  • ...It sounds like it's playing on an old VHS where the sound gets all distorted

  • MONK is true genius!!! Some would say his technique is horrid, I couldn't disagree more!!! He is a true musician and makes every effort to throw out the typical piano technique and consciously chooses expression beyond flowing lines.

    MONK is BEYOND LEGATO!!!

  • as good as monk is, (and he is really really really damn good), you all gotta admit he's a grower

  • beautiful, melancholic and funky too. theolonious only has two hands - seems his foot is conductor that he longs to bring into play

  • 本当に、わしづかみ、の一言です。

  • 本当に、わしづかみ、の一言です。

  • What stroke of genius, tell me about rythym, coordination...yes maestro, I bow!

  • Monk plays the piano like...'lemme just fugg wit you for a minute' lolol im leave you just they way I found you but just...piano says i like it...''

  • Monk plays the piano like...'lemme just fugg wit you for a minute' lolol im leave you just they way I found you but just...piano says i like it...

  • revolutionary...

  • man i love this song. my great uncle is gettin down on the piano

  • He's such a fascinating character. I mean, you can hear (and see) that he definitely had "chops", he just CHOSE to express himself in this way only. The fact that he (arguably?) had a mental disorder of some sort makes him even more special (absolutely no pun intended).

And if you listen to any of his solos, he DOESN'T play any "wrong notes" whatsoever. It's just that it sounds like that to these jazz novices' ears. He sticks really close to the harmony, plays sophisticated syncopation etc.

  • Great video. I just don't understand why people think they have to use profanity when posting comments. Perhaps that's the highest quality of vocabulary they have. Maybe they should invest in a dictionary and thesuarus to broaden their verbal horizons.

  • @zageem

    Well, you should hear the repeated 4 letter and 4 syllable profanities some of those bebop cats used when I was a kid, but was between them, of course. ;

  • Wonderful...

  • Thelonious Monk and Coltrane are my favorite jazz musicians. Ray charle's instrmental jazz gets me as well. But Thelonious Monk was so unique with his playing style..love it.

  • i like it...lovely video and performances

  • Marvelous soloist, yet perfectly at ease with other musicians. Great video!

  • I hate it.

  • @hirgons Go listen to avril lavigne and stop posting stupid things about revolutionary people on youtube.

  • @Breety -- I just don't like it, no worries about me, you breasty conservator.

  • Estou prestes a morrer de overdose de musical!!

Isso é maravilhosooooooo! Não canso de ouvir e repetir

"Ô Monk vai tocar assim na minha sala , no meu quarto"....please!

    Maga-Lee :-))

  • Monk is the man! Seriously

  • I just love that this video has more than a million views =)

  • Monk maravilhosooooooo!

A mais linda música do mundoooooo!!

    Maga-Lee :-))

  • GOOD GOOGELY MOOGELY. Tha musicians from yesteryear. Thelonious Monk,Miles Davis,John Coltrane, and Charlie Bird Parker etc etc were in a class by themselves. close your eyes and watch where this slice of top notch jazz takes you at. peace

  • this is definitely in my top 5 favorite ballads ever.

  • he never learned how to play, but he CAN PLAY, great!!

  • I know nothing of jazz and "chord progession" and other technicalities, but I think that makes me appreciate it more. I'd rather love the pure beauty of this than disect it note by note and loose the meaning of it.

  • Love his music, love his dirty piano playing. Thelonious is one of the greatest jazz masters of all times !!!

  • When you see this song on an album, the composition is always credited to Monk, Cootie Williams and Bernie Hanighen. Cootie Williams is said to have bargained with Monk for co-composer credits on this song in exchange for his recording it, plus some extra cash. Hanighen wrote lyrics for it after the fact. But, as good as Cootie Williams was and as nice as the Hanighen lyrics are, this don't sound like no Cootie Williams or Bernie Hanighen song. It sounds like Monk.

  • @diggsduke .....Couldn't agree with you more! U know your jazz history! =D

  • Can't you hear his phrases... they seem so mathematical... He like to play this way, that's his style, Monk Style :)

  • Dave Chappelle loves Thelonios Monk cause he was a master with his timing as is Chappelle...

  • @shtboxexpose I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a huge Monk fan, but I'm pretty sure that you just insulted him, I mean Chappelle? really? he's good, but I mean, really, If you're going to compare (debatably) the best Jazz musician of all time to a comedian, at least pick Cosby, or sammy Davis Jr, or someone who's in the same class.

  • @Eugen987654321 Oh I actually meant his timings with his jokes...

Obviously Dave is a mediocre musician which I'm sure you'd challenge as well but! you.. I mean.,,,, Charlie Murphy...hold up who we talkin about again!?... shit that's right Dave has an average pianist...

  • @Eugen987654321 Chappelle plays this song in "Block Party" so I assume that is why he was mentioned. Apparently, he's not a musician and does not know how to play any other songs. He dedicated himself to learning to play this one song. He wasn't bad. P.S. I'm a Monk fan.

  • @AmazingMonkeyQueen He was mentioned because apparently he has amazing timing and likes monk.he was not in my understanding mentioned not for any sort of proposed musical talent or desire therof. "shtboxespose" was trying to make a correlation between musicians and comedians and I told him to at least pick a comedian of similar calibre to compare to Monk.

  • not as good as me

    lol only joking

hes frickin the realm of awesome:)

  • What is he doing with his right foot!?

  • @SrbijaaBree 1/2 tapping his foot agressively, half using the pedal. he was probly also high...

  • @slowgold20 i am not sure in that...cus i am doing the same with my hand when i am listening...but... its not the same...

he has his own rhytm...its fascinating!!!

  • @SrbijaaBree pay attention. hes keeping count

  • we can't argue that here but, as a piano player, I find it impossible to accept that conclusion.

  • @dvpiano You must not be the same type of piano player as Monk, then. Nothing wrong with that, but Monk was brash. He would even comp in a harsh way to get the soloist to explore outside their comfort zone. His playing is intentionally harsh to induce a certain feeling.

  • @dvpiano you might enjoy Jacky Terrasson's new version with his trio on the cd "Push". He's classically trained, very smooth when he wants to be, although he too does occasionally bang keys for a "brashness" effect jambando talks about. full range of dynamics. keep in mind, Monk DID write it, and showed us how to play it as HE heard it. He showed us and opened the way for a whole new level of expression on his instrument.I don't any jazz players who don't feel this way about Monk's playing.

  • amazing

  • Monk doesn't do justice to his fine composition. He plays well but has the touch of a jack hammer. This beautiful song demands some sensitivity
