I currently use a DSC W290. I prefer to buy the used ones for cheap on Ebay, rather than spend twice as much for a new one that will end up destroyed sooner or later anyway. I do put my cameras in harms way quite a bit.
Funny, I asked them that same question when I was there. They said it has something to do with all the gunk they put in the ice (the white dye) causing the drainage system to get clogged when it melts. So they try to get as much of it out as possible before it melts.
Why not use a zamboni? Did you do scrape the rink often?
