  • That's incredible. I hope the crew publicly apologized after this game and MADE IT ALL BETTER like they did to Toledo this year against Syracuse. They should make every play reviewable. Who won this game and what was the score?

  • what should happen is next punt you level him even if he calls a fair catch, tell the ref you didnt see him signal fair catch

  • Well your right but I think someone is a Louisville fan.

  • I'm a little confused here. Why do they keep saying that this isn't reviewable?

  • You cant hit someone after they call for a fair catch which is why he stopped... He probably coulda chased him afterwards though, but thats 100% refs fault. He OBVIOUSLY raised his hand above shoulder lvl which (by rule) is a fair catch.

  • That's Big East officiating for you. A Big East crew also managed to get an extra point call (the absolute easiest call in football) wrong. Twice, once on the field and once on the replay.

  • How in the hell did they miss that? Two zebras lined up with his catch, and they just said 'fuck all y'all'

Apparently this game was poorly officiated on both sides. I hope most of these idiots lost their jobs, but I'm sure they're reffing some key Top 25 matchup somewhere this very weekend or god forbid Alabama-LSU if some went to the SEC. I don't want these numbnuts deciding who goes to the national championship game if they're blind as shit.

  • fuckin cheating ass thug...look at him smiling too, i'd beat the fuck out of him. Thats not even right dude, you can't call a fair catch and run, if you not gonna run it don't catch it is how i see it. let the ball bounce and let physics decide where it stops. it's not fair for you to decide where to stop it. Oh yes if he called a 'fair catch' again i would pop the SHIT out of him not caring how bad he gets hurt or what kind of penalty we get.

  • This commentator is a complete dumbass, if they continued the play they would've been flagged for a 15-yard penalty. What a complete fool

  • @sman884 Agreed. This is one of the few plays when you have to stop before the whistle because of momentum. You can't immediately stop yourself once the whistle blows, so you'd get a penalty.

  • larrrrrry talyor ahhhhhhhhhhhh my homie

  • uconn is the greatest sports program ever

  • @dseara no its not, they use to cheat in everything. Alabama is the greatest sports program.

  • @fonesmart123 Alabama's 1941 football team was argueably the best "not" top 20 team to be voted National Champions. And Bama still claims rights to that NC, being ranked 20+, losing more than 3 games and losing a bowl game...Roll TIDE Roll!

  • Play to the whistle? That would make fair catching pointless since it ALWAYS takes the ref a second to blow his whistle after the returner catches the ball on a fair catch.

  • This is classified as an "invalid faircatch signal." A legitimate faircatch signal requires at a minimum of a couple deliberate and intentional waves above the returner's head. Uconn should have been charged with a delay of game.

  • This is classified as an "invalid faircatch signal." A legitimate faircatch signal requires at a minimum of a couple deliberate and intentional waves above the returner's head. Uconn should have been charged with a delay of game.

  • plus they are at uconn's house.. that had to be they're referee..

  • how is it unfair?

  • @punksaregayjokes he called a fair catch then ran the ball for a touchdown!

  • why is that not reviewable??? EVERY FUCKING THING THAT HAPPENS ON THE FIELD SHOULD BE SUBJECT FOR REVIEW. If it happened, it should be reviewable.

  • its an invalid fair catch signal back then...now its if u raise ur arm above ur shoulder level, back then u had to wave ur hand high

  • @barnzNkeevz This isn't word for word of course, but I believe the rule states; "Any motion or attempt to raise the arm above the head is considered to be a fair catch." This guy definitely had his arm above his head, should have been flagged and fixed.

  • @HighTyro05: Actually the rule clearly states that your hand must be raised and waved from shoulder to shoulder more than once. Not sure of the precise wording but I I am sure of the "more than once" part.

  • when i saw the score, i said "oh its only the 1st quarter, but then when i looked at the quarter, it was the 3rd. what a low scoring game"

  • @BassBoyGio I was at the game, it was during a torrential downpour in CT. The field was soaked. Probably why it was so low scoring.

  • Wow man.... how could they miss this?

  • The real wonder is ofcourse why there wasn't/isn't a rule stating that any play that result in points is reviewable.

  • Worst. Refs. Ever. Why is the Big East a BCS conference?

  • @rhsdrama010 Why are there "BCS conferences" to begin with? Why is there even a BCS for that matter?

  • This is a bad NON-call, folks.

  • he has to wave his hand over his shoulder this was under his shoulder therefore its not a fair catch its just a dirty trick same thing happend in the colts jaguars game i think they should change the rule because its another rediculous rule like td celebrations penalties but thats the rule just wanted to explain it to ya

  • @violenceteacher6669 WOW, are you blind??? watch the video again.

  • @FosterFuel ok your right my bad wtf fuckin refs bad call but again my first comment is the rule but he did wave his hand over his shoulder

  • @violenceteacher6669 It's an invalid fair catch signal, followed by an illegal fair catch penalty since he ran.

  • @MurrowSon Actually, there is no penalty for an illegal catch signal. The ball is only ruled dead. You would have a delay of game penalty, at least, if the runner does not stop after the play blown dead. This was one of a few plays, that year, that called for the change in the fair catch signal specifications and rulings.

  • @lem4037 An illegal catch is advancing the ball after giving a valid or invalid f/c signal.

An invalid signal is one that does not meet the reqs. of a valid f/c signal. Two different things that sound the same almost.

  • @MurrowSon Oops, meant an illegal fair catch signal is only whistled dead. it does not constitute a foul. Now, continuing to run with the ball after and while the official is blowing the play dead may constitute the delay of game. I really have to proofread my posts.

  • @lem4037 They're confusing terms... ;)

  • Next time he would have called for a fair catch I would have drilled him anyway.

  • wow did you see the Uconns punt returner he was like ya so what i got a touchdown not fair and square

  • wtf these refs suck, i hope they were fired

  • lmao i was at dat game. da crowd was goin crazy even tho dey knew it was a fair catch.

  • You can't play to the whistle on a fair catch, morons. When you're running full speed to go hit the returner, you have to pull up when you see his arm go up or you'll never stop in time. This call is just about as bad as the Oregon-Oklahoma onside kick debacle.

  • @anAmishGuy Yes, you can and do. Refs aren't perfect, if the guy is up and running for the end zone, you stop him. Period.

  • Even the uconn players called stoped you are sso dumb refs

  • UCONNNNNN HUSKIESSSSSSSS

  • The officials Kragthorped that call...

  • Yep, blown call here. Back judge messed up here. You can not blame the kicking team for laying off since hitting a player who has called for a fair catch is a foul for 15 yards.

  • I like how the commentators try to defend the refs with the whole "play through the whistle"..... what about the opposite situatin, "oops I didn't hear the whistle, so I leveled the returner even though he waved fair catch"...kind of gets rid of the whole point of fair catch...

  • i hope ucon loses did they lose?

  • LOLZ

  • but if you hit the guy then you get a penalty!

  • football rules state that for it to be a fair catch you must raise your arm and wave it side to side (the key phrase here being "side to side") Look at the replays and you'll see that he raised his hand and only waved it "side" (if you will)

Not a fair catch signal, more like a sucker punch.... nice reffing.

  • @Trumpetz811 You are right about it not being a fair catch signal, but it was an illegal signal. There is a rule against waving your hand just once rather than side to side.

  • @Thevilleclark Oh, I didn't know that.... I can see why it would be a rule though, it's too close to the real thing.

  • @Trumpetz811 It is not a proper fair catch signal but because he did make such a motion, the play sould have been killed because of the motion use by the receiver. The back judge most likely received a huge down grade for missing this.

  • @lem4037 well as far as the kicking team goes... everybody should know that no matter what signals are made or calls are missed, etc, the play isn't over until the whistle blows

so even if this was a properly done fair catch signal, once he caught the ball and the whistle didn't blow, somebody should have leveled him

  • @Trumpetz811 the play does not necessarilyend at the whistle, in some cases. The play can and often kills itself. The fact that the kicking team let up because of the signal, illegal or not, is thier recognition of this.

The fault is entirely upon the official on this one because of the signal. The use of the fair catch symbol is a safety tool to prevent injuries. If it is misapplied, it is the officials responsibility to kill the play. If not, it is a guessing game and injuries mount.

  • @Trumpetz811 Also, lst us say that we have this same scenerio and the official is fumbling for his whistle after the catch, without a return. If the kicking team member lays the receiver out, you should get a flag for UR foul because they play itself is dead from the signal, not the whistle. It is mistakes by officials, like this one, I feel mkes things confusing for players and coaches. The back judge should have stopped the play because the receiver is his key and what he should prevent.

  • @Trumpetz811 last thing and I am done. This was an '07 game and a change in the NCAA rules was made because of plays such as this one. Any fair catch or hand signal, legal or illegal, constitutes that the ball is ruled dead upon the receivers possessing the ball.

It is too dangerous for the players to have them guess or wait for a whistle on such plays. The moment a signal is made, they can not hit the return man.

  • He raised his hand straight up bnear his helmet but not over it and went down thus making it an invalid fair catch signal.

  • Rebelsfball82...

Go to 1:34 Was that clear enough for you? You complete moron.

  • You can do that the rule is that you must wave your hand clearly over your head and back to be considered a valid faircatch signal

  • what a little bitch that punt returner is

  • he was streaching

  • u can do that

  • 1. If I was Louisville's head coach, I would tell my guys the next time he waves for a fair catch, I don't care what happens, you pop him a good one.

    2. Why the hell is this not reviewable? Reviewing a fair catch call should be really easy, probably one of the easiest replays in the game because there will always be at least 2 cameras focused on the return man throughout the play.

3, He said play till the whistle, but that wasn't their fault. The guy called fair catch.

  • who cares about the Big East in football?

  • How could the players and fans of UConn think this is fair????!!!!!

  • The UConn fans are complete bitches

  • its uconn and lousiville to shit teams i dont think the refs care

  • @drizzyU12 Learn to spell, dude. Its "two" not "to" . Have a nice day though

  • "play through the whistle" except when hitting a guy who signaled fair catch is a penalty. Then don't play through the whistle.

  • @danieledwardbailey If they had hit him after he signaled for a fair catch, they would have been called for unnecessary roughness, and tacked on 15 yards. It's shitty and wildly unfair.

  • @CrownedPeaches

    I know

  • @CrownedPeaches Don't be dense. Once there's no whistle and the guy is running, they should have tackled him, or at least impeded his further progress.

Refs aren't perfect, and players need to be ready for that.

  • obviously he waved his hand before he caught it.

  • wow.... how did that ref not see that?????? College football refs are the worst officials in the world....

World cup refs are better than these idiots.

  • these teams fucking suck anyway who cares

  • eh if he would've actually got us to a bowl game we still might be dealing with krapthrope instead of the awesome charlie strong.

  • The official was right on the play how the fuck do you miss that call? They sure had a jackass of a back judge in this game.

  • I dont get why the Uconn guy waved then took off like he didnt.

  • cheater! such players should be banned from the game - even from the nfl draft... especially after his reaction on the side-line... shame on you

  • @poolprevet i remember watching this game and seeing that play. and calling bullshit. also i remember cards fans going absolute ape shit balistic in louisville over this shit. but dont worry l"il bro, wvu has got your back. wvu is 6-0 against uconn and will beat them again this year in mo"town.

  • Sickening...

  • So much for 'fair play'.

  • refs were truly all horse's asses

  • Might be the worst call in the history of the world.

  • fire those refs.....make an example

  • those refs r on some sorta drug if they cant c tht

  • it was a fair catch ...... bullshit there

  • sensin a little hostility here jboCARDfan.... ballbusting aside ur right.. i think i remember watchin this live and it was ridiculous

  • I was at this game and to me it looked like he signaled for other players on uconn to get out of the way. By the way big east officiating F'ing sucks

  • @bobcat101100

    I dont think so

  • how much do u want to bet that the returner was running to give the ball to the ref and realized that the ref didnt whistle lol

  • You know as soon as Powell plays the whistle and hits Taylor, its gonna get called for a penalty

  • wow okay the year before this uconn got srcewed on a muffed punt call that should have been a touchdown when louisville was like number two in the country if louisville was any good they should have won the game anyway this play didnt cost louisville the game shitty D and Brohm throwin right ito Lansanhs Numbers (Uconn LB) Cost Louisville the game not this blown call

  • next time he actually does call for a fair catch they should knock his ass out

  • HAHA Uconn ftw

  • payback is a bitch

  • he waved , what a motha fucka

  • Why aren't all plays reviewable?

  • I hope the Punt Returner got hit by a car after this game. If you have to cheat to win, don't play.

  • @Kooly1 hahahahahahhahaha mE TOO .

  • sad wishing death upon others you will die before he does

  • Taylor went up to the refs right before the play and asked exactly what a fair catch signal was. The ref said you have to wave back and forth so Taylor waved once. It's probably not right ethically, but Taylor was playing within what the ref said were the rules. Blame the refs, not Taylor.

  • @jpl04002

and how do u know this?

  • @JaironHarrison

I'm a UConn fan. Taylor and Coach Edsall explained what he did in the postgame press conference. Like I said, it's probably not "fair" I guess but Taylor was smart to check with the refs beforehand and got away with one.

  • @jpl04002

it was a strange call, some refs call the fair catch differently though, some check for the wave, some check the arm circle, it depends on the ref, but still this was a one in a million call. personally if they guy kept running i would have kept tabs on him anyway

  • Agreed. I don't really get why I'm getting thumbs down on my comments. I'm just objectively stating the facts as it happened.

  • Interesting story....By not giving a fair catch signal he was guilty of giving an invalid fair catch signal. Thus, a penalty for trying to deceive the defense. I am an official and that should have been the call. Now the NCAA added that call (I don't remember what year or when this game was played) but maybe it was after this kind of thing happened they added it to the rule book?

  • that is the worst call ive ever seen. period

  • Nigga stole tha fair catch.

    What an asshole.

  • I think its the worst call only behind that pass interference in that championship game between Ohio State and Miami. Reason is simply cuz that was a game with more meaning but never the less this is just a bs call

  • where the one the game is end when 1000 beer bottles is throwing

  • fuck taylor and his bullshit grin. entire louisville team should've walked; this was no longer a football game.

  • this is a terrible call but bcs hopes weren't on the line and there have been plenty worse calls. I can remember Oregon-Oklahoma in 2006... if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up

  • cable that is idiotic. As a punter gunner you do not just hit a player after a clear hand wave. that is how you get a 15 yard penalty. terrible call

  • its funny cause thats not a fair catch single. rasing your hand in the air does not count as a fair catch. and they just gave up on the play should have just went after him instead of jawing with the ref.

  • @cable171 any movement by the hand in an upward direction is considered a fair catch signal buddy

  • i think the waving motion iswhat makes it a fair catch not a hand in the air cause i see player put the hand in the air. and o point does he put his hand in a waving motion. hey im not hating im just saying what i see.

  • c. A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the

opportunity to advance the ball, and the ball is declared dead at the spot

of the catch or recovery or at the spot of the signal if the catch precedes

    the signal (Rule 6-5-1-a Exception).

ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any signal by a player of Team B that does

not meet the requirements of a valid signal (Rule 6-5-3).

  • your a fucking moron. just a complete fucking idiot

  • yes it does. Its a fair catch signal.

  • All im gonna say is Louisville has no discipline cuz u gotta play til the whistle blows and this is just payback for a coupleopf years ago when they blew the call that favored louisville

  • are you serious? They saw a fair catch, and stopped.

Do you think they wanted to get a fair catch interference penalty? I think not.

    Louisville did nothing wrong.

  • @fullnelson9999 what a friggin whiner...do you squat when you Pee.........

  • @gottselig2004 no, I just have common sense

  • @fullnelson9999 No, that wasn't the issue. UConn signaled fof a fair catch, so the play should have stopped when the ball was caught.

  • @fullnelson9999 ok if the guy seen the returner running and seen the uconn people blocking should have been enough for them to see that its still a live play AND on top of that THERE WAS NO WHISTLE so dont say "oh their was nothing they could do they did nothing wrong" from peewee football they teach you play until the whistle. so they should have blown tht uconn player up if they got flagged for it they would say there was no whistle to signal if there was a fair catch or not.

  • @koolaidman2014 Actually, the fundamental is that the whistle seldom kills the ball. It is already dead by rule. The official missed this one.

  • @koolaidman2014 Or you're just an idiot who knows nothing about football or its rules...

  • @fullnelson9999 Yes, they did. What THEY see doesn't matter if there's no whistle and the guy is running for a TD and they aren't stopping him, then tackle him or at least impede his progress.

Same thing applies with a player that appears to be down, as we saw in the BCS and NFL the last few weeks.

  • @MurrowSon It does matter. The whistle hardly ever blows the exact second the catch is made. Usually the whistle comes half assed a second later as it is a pretty routine play.

  • Yeah because UCONN is a bunch of sissies and the only way they can win is to cheat

  • haha yea thats y we kicked ur ass again this year and wut bowl r u in

  • @MegaMets1986 Hey guess what!!! I'm a Rutgers fan not Louisville! So you have nothin on me because i think we have been to five straight bowl games and won 4 of them

  • i agree but 50 bucks says if he was tackled theyd call it in a heartbeat

  • It's confusing on the field and could be mistaken for a fair catch, but I think he was waving because he was off balance.

  • No shit!! Apparently, he signaled a fair catch. This is absolutely a dirty trick plus poor officiating crews!!

  • Yeah don't get me wrong, it should have been called as a fair catch because you can't make ANY signals like that as you're going to catch the ball. That was a bunch of poor officiating.

  • @MultiHotpot its called home team advantage. u get away with a lot of stuff. thats why they call it home team ADVANTAGE

  • @TheLXGent the referees are not LOUISVILLE referees they BIG EAST referees, referees should always be neutral.

  • @DirectShot999 regardless the rule says that any type of waving of the arm is considered as a fair catch

  • Yup, I added that in my last post when I noticed people had thumbed down my comment lol.

  • no, that was not an accidental wave. Watch again. Also if I was head coach I'd order the next punt to be short, and clobber that guy before he even get the ball.

That was so shady... no freaking respect for the game.

  • excuse me ifyu waVE over your face and head it a fair catch every body knows that who return punts i dont even return punts and i no that

  • His hand went up, waved and caught the ball. That move is to there protect the receiver.

You may see it the other way and I respect your opinion, but when I watched the vid it looked like he intentionally waved but when the ref didn't call the play dead he took advantage, and that's a lack of integrity on his part (and following the rules). And I have seen enough football to know that any wave over the head count as fair catch. In that split second ref gotta call fair catch, again for protection

  • Maybe, maybe not. Just like KILLA23456789 said, if you do ANY kind of signals like that, it's a fair catch and should've been called. I don't think it was really shady though. What coach would risk such a costly penalty to try a move like that? I still think it's from loss of balance, but it should've been called.

  • what the hell is this announcer talking about "play through the whistle"? is this guy retarded? if you play throughthe whistle its a 15 yard personal foul and you might get kicked out of the game, terrible call tho

  • according to the rules in the description say and i quote "extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once"

In the replay he sticks his hand out the the side of his body not above his head, waves 1 time, so Technically speaking BY THE RULES its not a fair catch

  • However, it IS an invalid fair catch call, which should end the play.

  • This announcer is a moron. If he "finishes the play" he'd get flagged for tackling someone after a fair catch. The returner clearly waved.

  • Thats what I was thinking. How exactly does the announcer expect him to "finish the play" when he thought the play was already finished!

  • Nevermind... he brought up a good point at the end.... the whistle never blew. I guess thats true. You have to playout out til you hear a whistle.

  • you cant play out to the whistle in this case. The Louisville players were literally right next to the returner.

  • He shoulda been hit as hard as possible for that. But if one of the players had never slowed down or stopped and they actually hit him then a ref woulda threw a flag for hiting him after he waved.

  • Larry Taylor is SOO good at kick returns he should be in the nfl not up here in the cfl. but i guess hes just not good enough for nfl then who knows?

  • yeahh that was unfair, but larry taylor is still a beast!

  • THAT...was pathetic

  • Dumbass announcer, if you "KEEP PLAYING" you get a 'Roughing the Kicker' call, IDIOIT!

  • roughing the kicker?

  • Sorry, roughing the receiver.

  • i remember this play... i'll say it again "refs should all be put into camps, starved, beaten, and slaughtered"- theillestdank

  • it wasnt a fair catch because he didnt do it properly, but ever here of the foul invalid fair catch signal, he should have received that. it was a desperate move, and next time i hope he gets layed out, even if he does wave fair catch

  • The rule says that he has to wave his hand from side to side more than once. He waved to the right once. That's not fair catch signal.

  • what was he doing, trying to fly?

  • I don't know what he was doing, but it's clear that according to the definition in the rules, that was not a fair catch signal.
