@EonFigure Ishinabe was the original Iron Chef French, Sakai wasn't an Iron Chef yet. It gets confusing because the title sequence has multiple discontinuites.
@rohannesburg he doesn't speak english, plus morimoto is over here in america, the all the chefs except for morimoto and kobe are in their late 60s and are retired or retiring (rokusabaru michiba is actually 82). chairman kaga is actually somewhat of a character, because the guys name is actually takeshi kaga, so the name is real but the character isnt.
@mokshalovely They aren't, but that's part of the "story", as it were. Don't forget that the man playing "Chairman Kaga" is also an actor, and the show is just that: a show put on for our entertainment while also showcasing the culinary advances in Japan by the top culinary artists.
That said, I also miss Kaga... his over-the-top-yet-refined style cannot be copied.
I really love Iron Chef French Yutaka Ishinabe. But only one of them aired on Food Network, and that is this one.Even though it does not air on Food Network anymore, try to e-mail Cooking Channel to show the first episode.
I loved it when Kaga had said, "Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!" Better than politically incorrect saying, "Happy Hollidays!" Nice job in keeping Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior during Christmas Season!!!!!! ^_^
So how come in the begining of the show they introduce Sakai and Nakamura, but when they actually bring out the Iron Chefs it's, Ishinabe and Michiba as Iron Chef French and Japanese respectively???
@DyingElement Ishinabe is the orginal Iron Chef French, Saki followed as Ishinibe san could not handle the pressure of Iron Chef... He complained that he could not prefect his dishes in the time limit aloted, plus Inshinbe san was a perfectionist... Which in term got him like a 19-1 Record in Kitchen Stadium...
Well, this was a special battle for Food Network back when it was originally aired, for Christmas obviously, so they didn't have Ishinabe in the intro, and it was during the time they were airing episodes with Nakamura in 'em so that's why you see Nakamura. This was the first and only time we ever got to see Ishinabe battling in America besides the 2000th dish special.
One, I remember thinking "How do they stay so still when they're on those platforms?" But Ishinabe-san seems to have a problem staying still...nerves, maybe?
On the other hand, there's something about Ishinabe's still photo at 7:05 that just screams "badass".
One, I think they should have come up with a more comfortable pose for him.
Two, 6:56 has the same effect. Almost like the final boss of a video game, this major 'You wish to come after me, puny weakling! I shall fricassee you! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!' feeling. Michiba has that same look sometimes. None of the others have it quite as profoundly as those two.
Oddly enough, Ishinabe (7-1-0) and Michiba (32-5-1) have the best records. Coincidence?
Well, Ishinabe's pose is pretty much a mirror image of Sakai's...I don't think it was a matter of it being uncomfortable...
At that point, his grin just seems like one of those deviously evil ones...he may look like a friendly old man, but then when he starts cooking...OH CRIPES!
I don't think it's coincidence at all. They really know they can take down (almost) anyone they face. Though one wonders if Ishinabe had stayed longer...how would he have done?
I've seen a handful of Nakamura episodes, but never Ishinabe. How long was Ishinabe on the show? I don't think that long. When Hattori attempted to become an Iron Chef, Kaga said it had been seven months and Sakai was already there...so I'm guessing his tenure was EXTREMELY short...but how long was it exactly?
Yeah, Food Network didn't show very many of Nakimura's battles, and I believe this was the only battle of Ishinbe's that they showed, except for a special one were Sakai, Ishinabe, and a chef named Joe were on a team, angainst three other french chefs. I used to have that one on VHS were I had taped it. A great battle it was!! The secret ingredent was like 5 of the most expensive ingridents in the world. Truffels, Foi Gras, Champange, and I don't remember the others.
Ishinabe only had about 6 or 7 battles if I remember right before he retired. I'm guessing Food Network didn't air his battles much, even in the re-runs, because I watched the show a TON and don't recall them ever airing any.
I love the restraint of the Japanese audience. If Oprah were to say Merry Christmas the way the Chairman did, everyone in the crowd would be screaming and having heart attacks. Gotta love it.
It's funny to see how maniacal a character the Chairman was in the earlier episodes - by the time this show ended its run in Japan, Kaga's character was a little more subdued (but only a little more...)

I think Ishinabe was on for 7, 0r 8 episodes, and only lost one, or was undeffeated.

He only lost one. The show began in October 1993 and Wiki said Sakai started in early 1994, so just two months. He quit due to stress.
