@59catmando basically all big diesel engines. Merc 2.0 or 2.2 Diesels live forever. BMW 6 cylinder diesels. Audi/VW 5 cylinder petrol (without turbo) and diesel. Volvo 5-cylinder petrol (without turbo) or diesel. But as usual for long life engines: high displacement and low output. But in terms of petrol engines, you are right: they don't live that long, because of high output.
@Havana69 The Merc diesel is a very undependable engine,we have them in our trucks at work and they have been in the shop more than they have been out making deliveries and the volvo diesel is just as unreliable . The Euro diesels can not hold a candle to the American Cummins ,Caterpillar and Detroit engines. And as for the Euro cars well they just fall apart. Hate to say it but they only look good and are a status symbol for people who think others are impressed by them.
@59catmando Hmm, here in Germany, the Merc Diesels are as dependable as it gets :D They usually get the highest mileage. But yes, for that, they have to be well maintained. And that's not cheap. You're right about the status symbol bit. Every reasonable person here buys a Japanese car. They may not last long either, but they're cheap to buy and maintain. That's the big issue on German cars: think of a 17.000 mile maintainance for a Smart at about 1.000€ at the Smart dealership.

Solution from carmakers: overly complicated engines, that squeeze out every last bit of power out of the smallest engine, while emitting cleaner air than taken in and make 45 miles to the gallon. Same problem in Japan. But I have to admit: to me, most American cars (except the classics e.g. '67 Mustang, GT40, Corvette etc.) are ugly. But there's no way to argue about taste ;)

@59catmando Yep, the EU just happened to get an oil embargo by Iran after threatening them, to do it the other way around. Since then, fuel price upped to 1,65€ per liter, that's about 8,30$ per gallon. That's insane.
American cars have actually starting doing some nice interiors (this is an old video, by the way - 2006 or so). Corvette hasn't changed yet, but will for 2013 year model from what I've read. But, take a look at a new Chevrolet Cruse, or the new Ford Focus (which is from Ford Europe) or the Fiesta (European again). Or hell, check out the new Dodge products! They even have good interiors! As has Kia and Hyundai.

I am an American and I really was never a fan of American cars that I can afford; however, I must admit over the past few years our cars have gained ground on Euro's and Japan's cars. In some areas, we have surpassed. Materials, fit and finish have much improved along with performance (yes, we can go around turns now). Middle class and luxury/sport car sales will be mastered by Americans once again.

Sure its not the fanciest car in the world or the slickest but its a good bang for your buck sports car. My friend has the Z06, it has Ferrari like performance and is no where near as expensive. It's a fun ride.

Put a proper race driver who knows how to use the entire range of throttle into the American cars and they'll do better immediately. Also, most people here don't keep their cars stock, they modify them. At least you can still work on the cars that come from America, even if the company is owned by the state.
@Disturbed9509 thats because this show mostly tests European super cars. Take a gander at the Nurburgring times and you will find that the Viper ACR, Corvette Zr1, corvette Z06, and camaro ZL1 have out lapped most of Europes finest for a fraction of the price.
The fact remains the only European cars that can compare to American performance cost tens, sometimes hundreds, of thousands of dollars more. Dollar for dollar American cars perform the best and thats a goddamn fact.

The regular 400hp C6 roasted their beloved TVR and their Porsche "GT3" on the road coarse... thats funny. In latter episodes, you'll see the Corvette (400 hp version) time is actually tied with a Ferrari 575 time on the Top Gear Track. Pretty damn good for a car that costs around $40,000 (in the U.S.), in Europe they add some more onto the price there because they have import tax, among other such things, which sucks for them.

Why is anybody still butthurt about how top gear talks about America? It's top gear! It's what they do. If the show was too politically correct, it wouldn't even be interesting. They've made remarks about Canada, Mexico, Spain, Korea, Scotland, Albania, Denmark, France, Germany, America, etc. We don't have to go into a rage and start flying the stars and stripes. For example Porsche are complete shit in the long run both my cayenne and Carrera fucked up after 80,000 miles... I am an American and I really was never a fan of American cars that I can afford; however, I must admit over the past few years our cars have gained ground on Euro's and Japan's cars. In some areas, we have surpassed. Materials, fit and finish have much improved along with performance (yes, we can go around turns now). Middle class and luxury/sport car sales will be mastered by Americans once again.

Put a proper race driver who knows how to use the entire range of throttle into the American cars and they'll do better immediately. Also, most people here don't keep their cars stock, they modify them. At least you can still work on the cars that come from America, even if the company is owned by the state.

@Disturbed9509 thats because this show mostly tests European super cars. Take a gander at the Nurburgring times and you will find that the Viper ACR, Corvette Zr1, corvette Z06, and camaro ZL1 have out lapped most of Europes finest for a fraction of the price.
The fact remains the only European cars that can compare to American performance cost tens, sometimes hundreds, of thousands of dollars more. Dollar for dollar American cars perform the best and thats a goddamn fact.

In latter episodes, you'll see the Corvette (400 hp version) time is actually tied with a Ferrari 575 time on the Top Gear Track. Pretty damn good for a car that costs around $40,000 (in the U.S.), in Europe they add some more onto the price there because they have import tax, among other such things, which sucks for them.
And true, they do not put leather interior, because they know they could get away with it in America,
