  • "Saori Yano and The Shinji Akita Trio isn't here right now, call back in a couple minutes when they have come back to earth."

  • I just went through all the comment pages up to p.#9 I think. I can't believe all those whiners criticizing Saori's intonation. Are you guys out of your mind ?

How many of you toured with Randy Brecker ? How many of you had Jimmy Cob playing drums in your rhythm section when you were 18 y.o. ? How many of you had James Moody recording and touring with you ?

Go back to the woodshed and keep practicing, before you open your mouth criticizing the real genius.

    Good Luck !!!

    Good Luck !!!

  • Hi guys,

    Here is my dream Q-tet:

    Saori Yano - as

    Hiromi Uehara - p

    Esperanza Spalding - b

    Terri Lyne Carrington - dr

If this would ever come true, I'll be in 7th heaven. Four gorgeous looking women swinging like hell..............Pardon me, I forgot that heaven and hell don't mix.

    Whatever, that's my dream.

  • asians.

  • She's a bad girl! She puts a lot of men saxophonists to shame -- I am looking at you Kenny G. Listen to those riffs?

  • socialsax com is a new saxophone social community. you can browse and chat on forum, download backing tracks for free, add video and music. not only that you can make new friends there!

  • Occasionally I'll hear a piece for the first time and instantly want to get in the studio.

Not since Wayne Shorter's take of Villa-Lobos' 'Bachianas Brasileiras No.5' have I wanted to kick it this bad.

That's enough talk, I'm getting in there.

    Top shelf stuff.

  • Please proceed never to a Selmer. I love the sound of the Conn 6M. Nobody plays this saxophone better than you.

  • Jeeeeeeeeeeee:)):)))

  • hhh i ve always had a thing for girls who give good blow

    lol just kiding

  • @TheDarkLordofSaxes - I play a Mark VI tenor and Selmer Super Action 80 Series II alto and soprano. Why do you ask and why would you choose to ask me if I play a Jupiter? I've played some very nice Yanagasawas over the years.

  • Saori Yano has a heavy influence from Charlie Parker.

Check out 0:48 to 0:55 and check out Charlie Parker's solo for "Confirmation."

  • Pitch is terrible. Those old Conn 6M altos had a great sound but their intonation renders them almost unlistenable. What shame because the sound, time, ideas and spirit are so amazing in this performance.

  • @Musedoc What sax do you play? Jupiter? I play a Yanagisawa.

  • @Musedoc

That must be why Bird sounded so awful - he played a 6M. Same with Benny Carter and Willie Smith. But seriously, if set up and played right they have intonation at least as good as a Mk VI, which also had its intonation criticized relative to the SBA. She sounds fine. You want to duel with her?

  • @gcrav First of all Bird played on any cheap horn he could pick up at the pawn shop before the gig started, and his ideas, tone, and intonation were all 1,000 times better than this, dont get me wrong she sounds great most of the time, but to say Bird sounded awful must mean you have bad taste!

  • @gcrav Huh. Well, I can only assume that you are being sarcastic. Anything that you can say about Bird (except that he was a genius), the opposite can always be said too. His horn of choice was a Selmer Balanced Action but apparently, it was hocked more often than not so he would play what anyone stuck in his mouth. With titanic substance abuse problems, sometimes he sounded great and other times he simply didn't. Wasn't the horn's fault.

  • @Musedoc Bird's classic Savoy and Dial recordings were done with his 6M, which he eventually hocked. He recorded a lot with a Super 20 after that.

It strikes me that you're predisposed to hear Saori's use of dissonance as intonation problems because of your own view of Conns. The 26/30Ms are well known for good intonation, which is why they are the most sought-after Conns. If you have an issue with use of dissonance, that's about aesthetic choices, not intonation.

  • @gcrav Why are you still on this? Why does this matter so much to you? You don't know me so stop making blanket statements about people you don't know anything about. OK? Just leave me the fuck alone and stop with the comments. Life is beautiful, go out and live it.

  • @gcrav

Benny Carter was one of the supreme musicians of all time and I never heard him play anything out of tune. Not the horn, dude, it's the player. I loved my old Conn, but they've got intonation problems that clearly have not been overcome in this performance.

  • @Musedoc Hi just to comment on your statement that conns have intonation problems. This conn the 26m conqueror which I have as well are spot on with their intonation. Which conn did you have?

  • @gcrav finally, gcrav, why do you take my objective observation so personally? If you dig her playing, dig on. I don't. So, who cares? As far as the pitch is concerned, listen to it again. It's a problem.

  • @Musedoc I cant tell if she's playing with bad intonation on purpose, simply because its constantly biting my ear, in all the same places, and in my opinion its bad taste if it is on purpose. If you download her itunes recordings you can hear it better. I use an old conn chu berry 1920's model for alto, and it plays in tune very well.

  • @kirboman Don't get me wrong, I LOVE old horns. My VI tenor is from 1955, I used to play a 1936 Balanced alto until I lost it in a fire. One of my flutes is a 1955 Powell. Having said that, old horns require a lot of attention on pitch but having said THAT, nothing sounds like an old horn! They're definitely worth effort?

  • @Musedoc im jealous. you have a tenor :(

  • @Musedoc wow. you have a history defying mark vi! the first vi's came out in '56 ;).

  • @Musedoc Hi she is actually playing a 26m conqueror and I have the same horn and there is no intonation problems with mine they are supposed to be the best conn ever made. basically the same horn as a 6m which I also have but with a lot of extras. Cant believe you say they are rendered almost unlistenable. I compare my 6m and 26m to my Yamaha 82Z and although the vintage horns are darker the intonation is spot on. probably which is why they are one of the most sought after of vintage horns.

  • Sweet, melodic, fast and tight. Awesome.

  • amazing

  • @littlebones18 Literally. Well, except physically. :)

  • wow.. she's really awesome, talented & very young as a jazz alto sax player! Saw her other vids on youtube.. I became an instant fan..

  • Well it was decent for a $5 blowjob.

  • Saori's Jazz chops on that saxophone are graceful while still maintaining emphasis on each note in an elegant fashion. She as well as Akita's trio are exemplifying the TRUE essence of Jazz. I just love it!

  • That was excellent.

  • What year was this taken?

  • Charlie Parker was reincarnated into a Japanese woman when he passed.

  • American standatd jazz. I wonder why Japanese female can compose and play the jazz like this style. It`s amazing!!!!

  • Superb! "Jazz at it's best".

  • Nice!

  • I usually don't like this style, shikashi! This chick has a sound I like.

  • This is so fucking good! It made my day :-)

  • this is hardcore jazz

  • cual es el nombre original del tema por favor ? gracias !!!! saludos

  • @jlcm1963 no se japones pero el tema es " I & I "

  • @ingwazVL no es tan sencillo ,

  • @ingwazVL

  • she is better than Bird, Trane, Stiit, Woods, Cannonball combined!!! No question!! You all agree with me I'm sure.

  • @martynau you're out of your mind. She is good though. But there are better players that are still alive as well. You might be partial to her for whatever reason.....and that's fine. I happened to think she plays good and I think its even much more blessing to see this type of playing come from across the world. But the type of strides that Cannonball, Bird, Coltrane etc made in their lifetime has yet to be matched.....even by the likes of Wynton...

  • @JColeM7785 Sleepy Matsumoto, Kaoru Abe, Sadao Watanabe....

  • She's amazing!

  • THOSE TEETH D:

  • amazing:)

  • Educate yourself! My god that comment is horrendous!

  • @mindahl

American schools...Nothing you "Kan" do about it. That's how teens text, that's how they will write, even when it's not a cell TEXT!

  • @formaset . That's why I am sending my Daughter this year to study overseas

  • @mindahl WHAT???

  • I have no music background and never played an instrument in my life. My parents were Iowan farmers so I had a deprived but loving childhood. So where do I start if I want to play the sax like Bill Clinton? Sax makes a such a chilling and deeply romantic sound. How do I learn the basics-like how to read music sheets, principles of rhythm,etc.. I have an MD degree but music illiterate. How sad eh?

  • @Microglia1 well, you can take lessons, or you can find books on music theory. There are jazz theory books too, so you might wanna check those out (or find it all online) . Music is a language, so once you learn the notes (characters), you can make words (chords), then phrases. It's not sad because you don't think it's impossible.

  • @BestCommonViewpoint

tHANK YOU FOR your advice on learning jazz. I'll do my best to find the right mentor. I love the impromptu screams and shrieks, a kind of beautiful sorrow only a sax can make.

  • Not sad at all, every great musician was once someone who never picked up an instrument. Even if you never become a top tier musician the joy you get from playing is priceless.

Just go to your local music stores and ask about local teachers, you'll find someone in no time to give you the basics and then just listen and play and listen some more then play some more then listen, play, listen, play

A decision to start playing an instrument is always a good decision

  • @ThinkMink15

thank you for your advice. I think jazz lovers are really nice people.

  • @Microglia1

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. My parents weren't farmers, though, but I spent most of my childhood trying to stay away from music (thanks to the piano). Last November, I decided to learn how to play the saxophone...even though I had long forgotten how to read music. My suggestion would be to get a book like "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music" to help with the basics of music. However, taking saxophone lessons from a real live teacher (as opposed to a DVD) is necessary, too.

  • its just like learning another language. You gotta learn the grammar (theory), practice and listen to the language. It takes awhile and no musician ever stops learning. However it is worth it, when you are a musician you dont work once in your life, I have never met a musician which is not happy about it.

  • @Microglia1 There are also better role models than Bill Clinton in the music world. haha try listening to all of the old jazz players, saxophone or otherwise. it will really help with the learning process.

  • She can obviously play, but why is the rhythm section setup like that. How gimmickey...

  • Thats a phat american sound she has going there lol (this sounds totally racist but if you know what im talking about youll see why its not)

  • i cant think of a better female sax player who?

  • If I want sax, I call Candy?

OF COURSE THERE IS A BETTER FEMALE SAX PLAYER :D

  • Very jazzy and smooth.

  • Great playing but urgh! that tone.... :-(((

  • not a fan of the tone...

  • For some reason i feel the same, will say it was a fantastic show, and never the less sounded great

  • Puñeta! esta cabrona si que le mete al jazz...5 *

  • what mouthpiece?

  • Dude, talkin' 'bout skills!

  • jajaja son buenos estos locos

    buenisima la tecnica

  • OMG so good nicely done :)))

  • My response to ALL...

This is the reason why we are all watching this video, is that we all like music.. regardless from whatever universe you are from..

  • Holy fucking shit. I was not expecting this girl to actually be good and not playing that smooth jazz shit. I dig the Parker lick around 1:20 ish

  • Comment removed

  • they dont sound great like other players i like, but they totaly knocked me out with their unique sound - maybe because of their nationality they earned a different ear to the same music we all gather to hear.

  • awesome, totally unexpected...

  • Only race here I see is music.

  • OMG her appearance was an absolute curveball... I saw the pretty make-up and and dress and bow and the flower, and was totally expecting some sort of a lame-ass Kenny G sound-alike to depreciate the value of my sense of hearing. Then she absolutely defies her appearance and kicks that saxophone's ass!!!

  • SHUT UP & LISTEN!

  • so racism much on yt these musicans seem like they are in tune w/each other. end product beautiful music. PEACE Blackman from Houston,TX USA...

  • Yeah! This is music!!!! Love it! Music is for everyone, no race, no gender, no rich or poor.. its for everybody...

  • good band!

  • Just about everyone you listed is deceased.

I believe blacks are the main source of the creation of jazz. But today we see that the music is almost exclusively being played by whites (or asians).

Blacks for the most part have abandoned this music for what passes as mainstream (hip hop, rap, etc.). Go to a jazz venue almost anywhere and virtually the entire audience is white. Same for the musicians.

The survival of jazz is dependent on

the players and the audience of today.

  • that's racist! if u don't like poeple who play jazz, then don't listen to it at all.

We don't need your stupid opinion, that only black people are capable in music, so shut the hell up!

  • @len344 where are you getting this information from? I wouldn't doubt that "most" jazz in clubs in the U.S. and Europe have significant amounts of white musicians. But that doesn't surprise me as blacks only make up 11% of the U.S. population and even fewer of the European population. But I bet you don't suspect that blacks make up only 11% of modern jazz music. So the notion is silly. True other artforms have been picked up and hybrids have been made of different forms. But there are...

  • @len344 of modern day blk jazz musicians. The question is, have you done a good search of some good jazz music, or have you been color blinded to believe your original premise. If you are into good jazz music....then just listen....and let the colors/races fall where they may.

  • @JColeM7785 unfortunately, I think you have missed my premise here. I'm not suggesting that any racial group is better than another when it comes to playing jazz. All I'm saying is that in today's America interest in jazz has been significantly reduced overall among the public and I think that those who remain interested are more likely to be white than black. I make no judgment about the music or the players. If I like it I don't care who's playing it.

  • @len344 i'm not saying that you think any racial group is better....I just think the mostly whites and asians are interested in this type of music is ill-informed. For example, hip-hop is by far large the most transcending music form to date...with the assistance of the internet etc. But its popularity amongst the youth cannot be ignored, that includes whites and asians. But specifically toward blacks....it is true that jazz isn't nearly as "important" as it once was but I'd argue it never...

  • @len344 was more influential than the blues was in terms of "maintstream" appeal. However, I believe we are only talking blacks in the U.S. correct? If so, i'd argue that proportionally speaking blacks are more significant than 10% in modern jazz, and that trend is starting to increase with programs designed to introduce and provide instruments to people of financial hardship......I think only one conclusion is evident....that jazz, blues, and even hip-hop was born out of the purest areas....

  • @len344 ....areas of expression....and that's disenfranchisement, inequality etc. And in that since....as far as Americans go....there is little argument on the level of inequality that a black american experiences. But none the less she plays very well.

  • pie?

  • I

    HATE

    PIE

    >:(

  • to the person who told me to be quiet! At the age of 5, I was playing 3 conga drums; when I entered grade school, I fell in love with the Clarinet, played it for eight years ;starting in the 6th grade! I picked up the guitar at 14 and became a professional musician at the age of 17! My Creole French grandmother gave me this gift of music! She played guitar when she was young, but I never knew until she got sick with Cancer;so, I wanted to keep her alive inside me! So I learned to play to guitar

  • You were not a professional guitarist after three years of playing. I go to school with people who are ranked top 5 in the nation on guitar and they are certainly not professional musicians. Go get a degree in performance, then you will be a professional musician.
