Then on top of that some selfish mo fo's want to FORCE them to buy health insurance they can't afford (on top of car insurance) that they MUST BUY before feeding their families or paying their rent. Go figure. All fun and games until someone loses an eye and it's you.
More often than folks realize... folks in the so called middle income bracket are one paycheck away from eviction themselves. Not only that... very often one thing comes up and they're behind on everything and live under constant stress of being homeless or having utilities shut off. They work hard and make too much to be subsidized or receive foodstamps etc Their children don't get to go to pre-schools because they can't afford it. Often feeding children PB&Js every day cuz they're BROKE.
I don't see how there can be equality. There are folks making under $30k getting 'subsidized housing' and folks making over $100k in the neighbourhood - who live comfortably. What about the middle income families who are paying for everything for everybody - before they receive their paychecks - but can't afford anything for themselves after paying their rent/mtgs.
Why does it have to be subsidized? If this is govt/city property, then the city builds it - at taxpayer expense. The renters pay their rent (25% of their income) and that pays off the debt to the taxpayers and perpetually pays the upkeep, maintenence, management, insurance etc., forever. In addition, whatever is 'left over' from the (rent money received) goes to help provide necessary city services: firefighters, etc.
Repossess the land. How can there be a group of wealthy individuals at the very top owning all the land while the people struggle to rent out a small and expensive living space. We need urban land reform now! Now's our chance to rally people to create a movement. Power to the people
Carlos, I appreciate you reporting on this issue. The members of ONE DC that you interviewed articulated the arguments for true affordable housing. Thanks for getting the word out there!
