He's a classically trained player, and its easier to play with it up higher. It doesn't move as much, and your hand can reach farther. Jeff has trouble on the second EoR solo because his is as low as it is. Unless you're in a deathcore band, there is no need to have it lower than your waist.

It makes sense. I don't play in any band, but the middle of my guitar is parallel with my waist, and it's easier for me to play than up high. I don't like deathcore, but since the style I'm trying to learn is melodic shred, I guess that makes it easier.
