Had this on a 45 back when I wa about 12.. This woman, was to me in the 70's the most soulfull female singrt/songwriter I had ever heard, and I still love her to this day.
Melanie Safka and this song are still making great impressions after 40 years. thanks. i can still remember very clearly that this long-playing record cover/sleeve was unglazed and yellow in colour.
I think Beth Orton covered this in concert circa 2005 - but then maybe I'm getting mixed up because she's tried to rewrite it repeatedly ("Precious Maybe", "Blood Red River", "Did Somebody..." - all similar in melody or at least in ambience)
I'm amazed by the comments, and to think this was just a dusty old B side. How many people ever bother to play the B side. There should be a section on YT just devoted to B's. Sad, isn't it, that you don't get B sides anymore!
Yeah I agree, most were really bad, but as an example, wasn't Maggie May by Rod Stewart a B side. Long time ago I know, didn't really like it that much, but, it was a major hit. I think we should revisit some of the B's, they may be so bad, they turn out good. LOL
Geez, my older sister turned me onto Melanie years ago when i was a kid. This album is still one of my favs. I love every song on it, and this is one of the best on the whole album. Melanie was so under rated.
i first heard of this song through Bonnie "Prince" Billy's cover of it with Tortoise. It was easily the standout track on the album. I immediately had to find this original version.
yeah it was kinda weird though... or maybe that's just cause I always seem to be stoned when I happen to listen to it...
I thought it was some kind of inside joke when I first heard it (the bonnie prince billy cover), especially when he claimed he was just a girl... also cause it's a really slow song, and it repeats the same things like a million times, like no I'm not in danger no no I'm not in danger, no no I'm really not in danger, in case you didn't get it the first 6 times I told you XD
thanks for posting this.. it's one of the most amazing songs in the world. and Melanie has a very nordic way to use her voice and it sounds like you're in heaven.. GREAT SONG!

this is a wonderful song! I love her music.
Does anyone have her recording of Ring The Living Bell?
I've tried to find it for the longest time.
