  • So brutal ... I guess non-singing bassists aren't known for writing popular music :)

  • 75,821

  • A cosy ten minutes..

  • I'm still cracked up by the dude giving them thumbs-down.

'Derek Smalls....he wrote this...." ha ha ha

  • I was there!

  • any one got the tab?

  • @megapurpleweed420 please die.

  • @megapurpleweed420 are you high?

  • Could this be the inspiration for all of those "shreds" videos?

  • Oh, we have bigger dressing rooms than the puppets?

  • Pupput show and Spinal Tap.. Lol

  • Spank that plank Derek!

  • ve never seen anything that sucked so much as this piece of extreme shit....

  • @skimam Holy fuck, you're retarded.

  • I heard this from another room and thought Emerson Lake and Palmer had reformed.

  • I saw this live - I was waiting for the puppet show.

  • @jazzx251 for real?

  • @sahartyman

[looks down at shoes and mutters guiltily] no

  • Thank you so much for posting this. One of the best parts to one of the best movies.

I love the guy in the audience looking sullen, giving the big thumbs down.

  • wow, jazz and jazz fusion are great stfu all of you worthless youtube viewers. Go listen to MCR or kid Cudi

  • wow, jazz and jazz fusion are stfu all of you worthless youtube viewers. Go listen to MCR or kid Cudi

  • On bass, Derek Smalls; he wrote this!

I love the dude in the front row with his thumb down.

  • Only people that aren't into music dislike Derek Small's Jazz Odyssey. I think his first solo album in '78 was probably the best Jazz/Rock/Pop/Country/R&B/Disco/Latin record of the year.

  • @tomthefunky

Both Kanye West and Led Zepplin quoted it as their favourite album, and Kurt Cobain blew his brains out after hearing it and knowing he wouldn't be a 10th as good.

  • @tkhushrenada: WRONG!! It wasn't Derek's album they were refering to, it was David St. Hubbin's triple solo album "Peninsula" that he recorded with the tribesman of New Guinea in 1969.

Jeez, man, learn your Tap history.

  • @tomthefunky

Indeed you are right. Clearly Jazz Odyssey was overloading my meager mortal senses whilst typing =D

  • @tkhushrenada: That's O.K. The Odyssey has a tendency to do that to people. The first time I heard it I decided to quit my job as an executive and move to California where I joined a religious cult. They made me rob banks and took advantage of me sexually.

  • vivs facial expression is priceless

  • He wrote this

  • Best song!

  • I've heard Pearl Jam play this live. They didn't do the whole 45 minute "exploration", it was more like 1 minute.

  • 0:24 - LOL

  • When people ask why I don't like jazz fusion I show them this scene from spinal tap

  • It mocks free-form noodling and audiences unwillingness to appreciate it at the same time... Brilliant!

  • 'You are witnesses, at the new birth of Spinal Tap Mk.II.' Haha, as opposed to an old birth you mean David? I love Tap, full of moments of subtle humour like that as well as the slapstick.

  • The guitar playing is wicked sick similar to Frank Zappa and Santana's Caravanserai album. Jazz Fusion fucking rules.

  • lol this is a catchphrase at my house since I'm a bassist xD whenever I'm a retard on the bass I call it a jazz odyssey.

  • it sounds like they're each playing different songs at the same time

  • this song had potential...

  • @PissoDeStrisso i agree. i liked it.

  • @thevoid99 proving once more that most jazz is pretentious bullshit.

  • @gerby90 Haha, this isn't jazz, man.

  • @gerby90 Jazz sucks but Jazz Fusion RULES

  • Dig the Lydian vibe

  • WTF? 4/4???!!! very unusual :-/

  • "On the bass.. Derek Smalls.. he wrote this"

    Classic!

  • I think they were supposed to be parodying Santana at this point in the film. In the early 70's, Santana went through a phase where they were sort of going fusion, before Carlos came back to Earth and decided he wanted to have hit singles again.

  • I actually like this song =D

  • sounded so similar to the Doors it's good stuff

  • Well, at least we got to hear the rest of this, finally. :-) (This is on their "Back From The Dead" album - in three parts!)

  • do I hafta come..right flat out and tell uuuu everthing gimme some moneeeey

  • The MK I, MKII, MK III, etc. has been used to refer to the various Deep Purple line ups...

  • Gotta respect a band that is willing to experiment.

  • The guitarist for R.E.M once said they played this exact same place for about the same amount of people.

  • Is that Linda McCartney on tambourine??!!

  • '...he wrote this'

  • The best bass riff ever!!! 0:35

  • "Hope you enjoy our new direction..."

  • oh sweet lulz

  • I suppose the Mk. II thing is a Deep Purple reference? Just a thought.

Spinal Tap makes me crack up every time. Timeless!

  • @EndeavorLeadGtr

I thought it was a Clash reference, because they called themselves "The Clash Mk II" after Mick Jones was kicked out, but I think that was after this movie came out.

  • I love the guy in the front row sitting there giving a thumbs down LOL

  • this is ridiculous

    ly hilarious

  • Spinal Tap Mark II. lol i love this movie.

  • Yeah! Jazz fucking fusion! It'd be great with a movie about a fictional prog rock band.

  • I love their jazz fusion. It's got souuuul. Even if it also has no direction.

  • I really loved this movie, and I was cracking up the whole way throught, but something about this movie really left me feeling kinda empty, or depressed. I have talked to other people about this, but only people that have been in a band experience have agreed with me.

    Great movie tho xD

  • My band fell apart in 1977. we did a two hour free form jam at the Valparaioso IN. YMCA for the same reason. LOL

  • It doesn't get any worse than this.

  • ST mach II baby.

  • "We're not going to play a fucking 45 minute free form jazz exploration"

Everything in this film is funny but this is one of the best bits!

  • @marknpeyton i laughed till i cried when you hear daves guitar cord unplug

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, "He wrote this" (i.e. NOT ME!!!)

  • I love the part where St.Hubbins says "We are not going to play free form Jazz to a festival crowd" and then it cuts to this, haha. (And also Harry Shearer's ending 'solo' "He wrote this").

  • actually it does.

  • jazz maestros

  • One of the best movie scenes EVER!!!

  • After viewing this little gem, how can anyone not be psyched about Spinal Tap's upcoming "Back from the Dead" album? Just imagine it, fellow Tapheads, we'll finally be able to treat ourselves to the complete Jazz Oddysessy (aye, with two d's) penned by the great Derek Smalls -- all three volumes of it!!

  • they're amazing. the whole album is amazing.

  • That bass 0:27 is enough to make anyone crap themselves

  • Comment removed

  • 'shit sandwich'

  • The puppets were on first and stole the show...it was unfair to expect ST to follow them........Nigel had left (cf. John Lennon) and David had brought in Janine on tambourine (cf Paul and Linda McCartney)........great jazz-rock fusion experiment and as always a thumping bass solo from Derek.....Viv Savage was a very underrated keyboard player (better than Jon Lord and Keith Emerson et.) and Mick Shrimpton could hit the skins harder than Corky or Bonzo !!!!! Go Tap

  • hahahahahaha priceless!!

  • They now sound like Sentana!! :o)

  • Santana?

  • CLASSIC LINE: "Hope you'll enjoy our new direction"

  • I loved this scene in the movie esp. when the guy in the crowd gives the thumbs down.

  • Tap is just one of the best concepts, ever....I wonder if the crowds are scripted? I don't think so. "C'mon, don't talk back...mime is money"...

  • The response is immediate and unanimous.

  • Just before this song David says, "We're not about to do a free form jazz...exploration in front of a festival crowd."

  • Hope you enjoy our new direction...haha love it

  • haha spinal tap are freakin hilarious!

  • the part where you hear ginene step on dave st's guitar chord and you here it fall out kills me every time

  • I hope you enjoy our new direction! The crowd look positively spellbound, all 15 of em. This reminds me actually, I must buy this on dvd again as my ex nicked it. Of all the films she could have pinched, she had to have this one. cowbag!

  • he 'wrote' this? Please show me the sheet paper

    Anyhoot, long live spinal tap

  • LOL

  • lol this tune is actually not bad

  • The jam works for about 20 seconds then dies. Viv kind of ruined it despite having two hands.

  • Best part of the movie. Cracks me up everytime...

  • harharr..before the sequence..I recall..David is expecting for FESTIVAL crowd..

Hehehheehhe this is common..Your expecting too much people but it turned out to be a tiny gig.

  • "I told them, Spinal Tap first, puppet theatre second!"

  • Hahaha! That's right. One of the many great lines in the movie!

  • I'd love to stay and watch this, but I have to go down to the lobby and wait for the limo....

  • That was filmed at Six Flags, Magic Mountain, Valencia Ca...

Lol, I used to watch bands like RATT and Great White perform there...

  • LOL, I saw The Vapors there around 1982. Remember "Turning Japanese"? Was actually a good show!

  • spinal tap mark 2 is great

  • At least their dressing room was bigger than the puppets'.

  • "We're not going to go into a free-form jazz exploration in front of a festival crowd!"
