PLEASE HELP, ive been wondering for a while, how to run audio out of pro tools, and run it though some effects and record it back into pro tools!? how is this done? PLEASE HELP
This would've sounded a million times better if they had used only the room mics in the mix. This video just goes to confirm what I've long suspected, that one of the reasons modern recorded drums sound like such shit is because everything is close-miked as in a sound reinforcement situation.
@deadbirdsings thanks, this is the dumbest thing I've read in a long time. You make too many assumptions. Different styles of music require different mic regiments. Try making a metal/rock mix with just room mics. FAIL.
To think... this guy did the mic placement and mixing for the new Van Halen record with fellow Grammy winner John Shanks doing Roth's vocals and overall production. WhooooHooooo!!!!!
@sessiondrummer127 Because he's a badass. Why do things the boring, "normal" way? I've done the same thing for years to give myself some variety in how I play fills.
@MST2k google Kenny Aronoff and see how bad ass his resume and background are. You don't get credits like that by sucking. The guy had multiple offers to be a symphonic tympanist right out of music school, studied jazz drums instead, and has worked with DOZENS of the biggest names in the business. If you don't like his style that's a different story.
@danakerman i think you must not have read the comment I was replying to (i'm giving you the benefit of a doubt here). i was telling someone who said he sucks what you just told me.
i have one problem with this mic setup why use the R-122V and SF-24 as room mics the way he describes it from 2:34 to 3:50 just put a Omni Mic where he has it its the same thing
@headbagger63 His idea was to get two different colors or sound with both mics rather than one omni sound to create the 3D. The same thing applies with the overheads. Two totally different sounding microhpones creating on image.
@nine99nine ya i know i tried this mic technique after seeing this video at a studio. its does the same thing but you get differnt tone and blend them together
@danakerman ya i know i kinda realize that i try the same thing when recording a drum kit it isn't the same sound although i would use a omni mic just to get room sound that mic setup is a little to direct sounding to me
Cool mic set up. Shame about the drummer.

adabass16 1 month ago
@adabass16 could they alternatively be 'hanging' out in the corner as well?

I can hardly hear the bottom snare on this, the snare sound as dry as a turkey breast!

There's too much kick drum in the mix. The kick overpowers everything. If it weren't for that, I'd say the drum tracks sound pretty good.

All those expensive mics and I didn't like that drum sound lol

just thank you!

@sessiondrummer127 kenny lives in a world beyond conventions...
he does it to have a typical 4 piece set up with an extra hi tom in the gap.

So is the mics on the drums still being used when the other mics are placed around the room?
