While this may be a valid use of the Channel Mixer, it is probably better to use: Image> Adjustments> Black and White (CS5).

The Channel Mixer takes a percentage of the colour from one channel to create part of another channel. This can be used to improve CMYK separations and is also very useful in repairing images that have been improperly exposed or the damaged. You may want to try the Channel Mixer if you see one of the channels is obviously blown out or lacking detail.
