This is one of my very favorite songs ever! I don't mean any disrespect to Vaughn Monroe's fans, but I don't think this is a great way to do this song. I guess Harve Presnell spoiled me.
@nuderobot Believe it or not this song was never a big hit no matter who sang it. Harve Presnell had a great voice and appearing in the movie with all thoes dramatic sceans how could it not be the best version. But Vaughn had the voice for this and did a great job as did Eddie Fisher. I only wish that Frankie Laine had recorded this in his prime but he did it on an album when he was in his mid eighties. Even at that age he stillhad a voice but just couldn't hit the high notes anymore.
@markalson1938 I have to disagree with you. The notion of "big hits," like everything else in the 1950's, was not tied to statistics. Many of us who were teenagers at the time were unaware of the play "Paint Your Wagon." But the Kingston Trio recording of this song was played over and over again at every party or social evening that I attended in 1960 and '61. We thought of it as a big hit.
@rorkesdrift42 I should have mentioned that the Kingston Trio version was on the Hungry I album. So far as I know, their version was never released as a single.
@markalson1938 The song was written for the stage production.... that's the way the name is pronounced in England..... many stage composers worked with the British pronunciations in the early days!
@MimzAngie The "old" classic spelling for your name is without the h on the end. If you do some deep internet searching you'll find some obscure linguists' discussions about how up until the beginnings of the 20th century, in English speaking countries, it was most common for women's names ending with the "ia" combination to be pronounced with a "long i."
@MimzAngie if you do some deep Internet searching, you'll find linguists discussing how up until the beginnings of the 20th century, in German and English speaking countries, women's names ending with the "ia" combination were pronounced with a long i (like you pronounce your name). Later, with an influx of Latin and Romance language speaking people, those names dropped their accent over the i and the "ee-uh" pronounciation became more common. "Maria" is the traditional spelling for your name!
I agree with you, there were many great takes on this song, but I like Vaughn's best. That's only because Frankie Laine was in his Eighties when he got arould to recording
this and no longer had the big booming voice. I wish he had recorded it sooner.
I always thought Vaughn Monroe did a good job choosing his songs: "Ghost Riders in the Sky", "Begin the Beguine", "In the Still of the Night". I agree with markalson, there's no bad version. If you don't have the singing chops you wouldn't record this.
Vaughn does this right nicely and I would not be ashamed to own it. But Herv Presnell did a good job in the movie and Robert Merrill did an RCA version that is superb.
Did you ever hear a bad version? No singer that didn't have a strong voice would dare try to sing this song. I have several recordings of this song and they are all good, it's just a matter of taste which you perfer.
I just remembered that Bob Hope lyric in full. Oh the temperature's hot in Tel Aviv and its always gettin' higher. And they gotta a lot wind and rain out here, and they call the hurricanes Meyer.
Very good version, but the best I've heard is by Eddie Fisher from his Young and Foolish album, about 1968. I remember Bob Hope doing a parody of this posing as an Israeli folk singer. The lyrics went. Oh we have a lot of wind and rain out here, and we call the hurricanes Meyer.
sing it again vaughn, sing it again. A great voice, great song and top of the shelves vidio!

I'm 48. When I was a "kid," Lee Marvin and Clint were my age. Now I have some wine, YouTube and find movie poster like this.
You young folks need to respect this "old time" music.
Some day, people will be YouTubing you!
XOXO!

@pgelvis I liked Sam Cooke, but I don't think he had the right type of voice for this type of song. But if you like it well to each his own.

Best version of this song is from the 2006 Madison Varsity Band concert by Tom Wopat.
...Not that I'm a fan of Wopat by ANY means.
