  • On the streets this would be used defensively. As in You've already been taken down by your attacker.

  • @pcjudosambo As shown here, too much gi grabbing to be really effective in MMA where you can't really use clothing as a grip. But there are ways to use De la Riva in no-gi. Not sure I'd want to try it in MMA though because you've committed your legs to the guard, and your opponent can drop a punch on you from full height if you make any mistake at all.

  • @thetinybrain Yeah it makes sense, since it's risky to do it in MMA, that means it's probably risky to do it on the streets ... so I guess this is a sport based technique, correct?

  • @pcjudosambo On the streets? Can't think of any reason you'd ever go to the ground while the other guy is still standing. It's certainly possible that you might get knocked down and then have to defend yourself, but I'd probably rather worry about getting back up again. I mean, what're you going to do if you get knocked down and then he pulls a knife? Or a gun?

  • @thetinybrain oh I totally agree with you.. 100%. I am a former Judoka and a current Russian Sambo student. In Judo & Sambo the ground grappling is the LAST resort. In Judo/Sambo, they teach you to stand, takedown and avoid being taken down ... also they teach to fight against multiple attackers. I know BJJ guys make fun of Judo/Sambo guys because we practice less groundwork (unlike BJJ guys who practice mostly on the ground) but like you said .. if knifes/sticks are involved... you're screwed.

  • @pcjudosambo if knives are involved you're fucked anyway. I think everyone should train standing and groundwork in equal measures

  • @TheGraciefighter101 yes, i agree.
