This would be a great way to signal a search air craft in the event you are lost in the woods. You could even write on the bag in hopes someone would read it and call for help. Use to use birthday candles with the thin bag from cleaners, the ones they put over dresses, with a cross made of balsa wood (like from a kite). Your right that the candles burn down to the sticks and catches fire and then the bags will ignite in a big ball of flame for a couple of seconds. Not much will drip down as it burns, but it will shoot off and drop in one mass somewhere. In the 50's and 60's cops would worry about forest fires when we did it in the country side.

I did this with helium and a trash bag. if you flip out the bag like your gonna use it for trash and then fill it with helium you get more lifting power.

not when they're flown responsibly - during the winter is best after a rain or snowfall so everything is wet - I've had one of my balloons melt and burn up in midair, and some of the burning pieces fell into a tree but the fire just went out...the tree had no leaves and it was wet...

They followed it till it disappeared - and as it went to such a high altitude there was very little chance of it still burning before it ever hit the ground again. Releasing fire-powered balloons should always be done with caution and following your balloon is always a good idea in case it catches fire or drops burning parts. I flew a small one last night and it dropped its fire source which I stomped out when it hit the ground.

A safer alternative to these is solar balloons (see my videos).

It was kerosene in the can, with a couple of cotton wool balls to act as a primitive wick.

The can has slits cut in it just above the fuel line to allow oxygen to get in. You need to experiment to find the right number and size of the slits.

The can is attached to a cross made from coat-hanger wire, which is connected to the garbage bag with short pieces of string.
