  • nice man. i am wanting to put a 4BT Cummins in my 91 Ram 150 its got 5.2L v8 gets around 18m.p.g i am thing 5.9L IL-6 doe but thats more work how much for the engine

  • How much to do the swap??????? cuz I'm not having the 12mpg no more ,

  • @GreensboroBkwik336 read all my comments as it is in there. there is lots of info about the conversion. thanks for looking

  • i just got a Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with a V8 5.2L and i wish i could do something like this, am getting around 19MPG high way :(

  • Great swap! I am doing one on my wife's 2001 Yukon and was wondering if you would do anything different the second time around. Where did you source an engine from in Canada. I was thinking of picking an engine at a farm equipment wrecker. Did you rig up your own draw straw at the tank or buy one? Thank very much for any info you can give.

  • TCI transmission now makes a 6spd version of the 4L80E with paddle shift option that would make an awesome addition to this rig for fuel economy. Of course at $6000 price tag the option of changing out the gears is more attractive. I would like to see the fuel economy /power/quietness comparison of a 4Bd2T Isuzu diesel from a NPR truck. GREAT BUILD!!

  • i looked up the adapter plate but couldnt find one for my chevy

  • I have a 2002 suburban and would love to do a diesel swap. I like the 4bt just not sure if it can handle all the weight and still last a long time. The 12v 6bt Im sure would be a real tight squeeze but I would love all that torque.

  • how much did it cost to do the swap

  • dash gauges are dead ???..or autometer units?? I miss old style dashes with gauges you could hook up to any swap..great truck

  • Half the pistons twice the milage,Ill take that anyday.

  • Nice rig!

  • hey! thats a sweet swap ya did there. sounds good too i saw you last year in kalispell montana i about shit bricks cuz i was so surprised it was a diesel! very cool!

  • The ability to extend an engine’s speed-range allows it to stretch that torque curve out farther, provided that the high-speed efficiency is there to make horsepower. sorry for the triple post but youtube loves to limit comment size.

  • wherever that happens to occur. Below the torque peak, engines generally have more than enough time to fill the cylinders; above the torque peak, they don’t have enough time to completely fill the cylinders. This is generally beneficial in that it lets engines produce most of the desirable grunt work (torque) at lower engine speeds, which means reduced wear-and-tear and better fuel economy.

  • Torque is the twisting force imparted to the crank flange and then transmitted to the transmission and the rest of the drivetrain. To some degree torque is the grunt that gets things moving, and horsepower is the force that keeps things moving. An engine is most efficient at its torque peak,

  • See they had to shut er down just so you could hear im. An down even think about Mcdonalds drive thru!

  • @drewchristianhansen Oh for crying out loud the hood is open who goes through the drive through with the hood up? I own a 2006 Jeep Liberty diesel when the hood is up it's a bit loud hood closed you hardly know it's a diesel. I've owned 6 diesels, and never had any trouble at a drive up window even at the bank. Plus i'd rather get 30mpg's with the diesel liberty then 20 mpg's with the gas version.

  • I love the 4bt. I have helped on several swaps but guys. The ONE thing no one talks about on all these 4bt swaps is dude. They are friggin' loud!!! Wrappy, nappy, amplified popcorn popper loud. My neighbor has tried everymuffler and exhaust known man an we can all hear him comin around the corner from 6 blocks away. He wants to try get a new version of the 4bt the 3.8 isf He says thats why the 5.9 went to 6.7. But man you know a vehicle with a 4bt and check your local ordinances cuzz damn!

  • @drewchristianhansen People use to tell me my 6.2 was loud with dual exhaust and glass packs and it wasn't near as loud as an 18 wheeler. It also isn't just the exhaust pipes making the noise it's the engine try some sound insulation in the engine bay.

  • Cool but its underpowered?? the 4bt is all tourqe. you should of jus went with the 24 valve. Or the 12 valvle.

  • @62ermaFF When it comes to pulling I want torque not HP. Torque is you so call oomph not horsepower. Horsepower is a meaningless term used to convince us to buy bigger engines we don't need.

  • @roberts459 Torque is the twisting force of the engine...horsepower is the rate at which that force is applied...in laymans terms. Horsepower has its place too

  • That's awesome great vid. Hey, I noticed that your turbo was direct to the intake. And I also noticed that you had allot of space between the engine and radiator, have you thought of putting a intercooler in? You would increase your mileage even more. Again awesome work and I also hope to put one of these 4BT's in my 69 Ford Bronco some day.

  • well thanks for the help ill try and put a video of mine when i get it done

  • i have been thinking about doing basically the same thing but in a 2002 Chevy silverado 1500 was it a very hard build minus the A/C

  • @metalhead1523 not reallyas the ac was the worst part. build the mounts and the rest is easy. just dont cut any wires till you know you wont need them. read all the comments as there is good info in there. thanks for looking Clayton A.

  • hey I was looking to drop one of these in a ranger mind telling me the costs to do it It would be greatly appericated

  • I have an engine swap question.I have a 1982 GMC P3500 step van,292 inline-6,4 speed standard(granny 1st),4:10 axle.Would you know what Diesel engine/engines & A.O.D. transmission would swap in with the least hassle and pull a 7,000 lb vehicle? If not,do you know who would?I'm trying to improve fuel mileage as much as possible.Thanx.

  • @DodgeCountyIronFist yes most of it did the A/C was a chalenge, first to mount the compressor to get the belt to line up straight (serp belts need to line up very straight to the drive pulley) the other is the wiring ause the ac is controlled from the engine ecm.it thinks the motor is not running so it wont engage the ac. I wired up the ac on its own with switches and relays with a electric fans. works well. it is to hard to explane so call me if i can help you250-426-4413 thanks for looki

  • why didnt yall just put a 6.6 duramax in it?

  • @Jake45499 I did not want a computer driven engine, just a old school regular diesel . thanks for looking.

  • @NelsonandClayton oh ok, nice tahoe tho

  • got plenty of space for 2 more cylinders >_>

  • @MacBoznyII I thought about it but wanted fuel milage more then power. maybe next conversion. thanks for looking. Clayton A

  • @NelsonandClayton No prob. I'm a Cummins addict xD

  • quality video, i could watch this again and again:)

  • how much power does it have?

  • @mfarmakas17 stock was 105hp now it is about 130hp read all the comments as there is good info in them.. thanks for looking Clayton A

  • @NelsonandClayton maybe at the wheels, not at the crank. The 4.8 had 275 hp and the 5.3 had 285 at the crank. I got my info from Edmunds.

  • what did you do with the 5.3?

  • @09ICCE200 sitting on the shop floor for sale motor is in real good shape make me a offer. Clayton A (thanks for looking)

  • AWESOME dude. Diesel is way too underrated

  • Thats cool, hate chevy put you just made it better :)

  • What gear ratio are you running in your Tahoe? From what I have seen diesels tend to like a numerically lower gear to improve fuel mileage (as long as towing is not a concern). If you are running 3.73s I am curious as to if 3.23s or 3.42s would improve your fuel mileage even more.

  • @shoes121255 good day I am using 3:73 it works well for the 4bt as it is 1900 rpm at 65mph .i would lik to try 3:42 but it is lots of work to change them out. the 6bt would pull better and 3:42 would be ideal .maybe if my life slowed down some i would try it. also want to buy some TOYO open country H/T tires they are getting beter mpg as the are a highway tire.with little drag on the road. thanks for looking Clayton A

  • I want this in my truck but like a 5.9

  • @Doorn6045 yes the 6cyl would be better. I was looking for fuel mileage more than power. it is alot of work for the transplant but is well worth your efort. even my wife love to drive it. thanks for looking. Clayton A

  • put an intercooler on it and you'll have more horsepower and do better on fuel

  • @Twankiejones working on it hope to get it put on soon thanks for looking

  • cummins A

  • Where did you get the 3.9 badges?

  • @MonsterMX82 local sign shop designed it for me and made it - Wolfpac Signs, Cranbrook, BC 250-489-9188

Charged me $20 to design, but each decal was just a couple of bucks. Thanks for lookin'

  • very cool idea but for you to be getting 12 mpg with the 5.3 there had to be somthing wrong. i drive a suburban at work that has 210,000 miles on it and it gets 18 to 20 mpg (its a 2001 or 2002). i would think your tahoe should weigh less and therefore get even better mileage

  • @fatguylittlebike good day my tahoe got about 22mpg on highway if i drove real easy.around town was 12mpg with the gas engine(Can. gal) for us it would be X.8 so now we get 25mpg around town and 30+ on the hwy. thanks for looking

  • If you can do it, why does everyone have to design there own exclusive 1/2 ton diesel? Why not just use the ones already on the market?

  • @zapityzapzap i sure agree it is the goverment and oil companys controlling the people is my idea. thanks for looking Clayton A

  • @NelsonandClayton Diesels have always appealed to me, especially the B5.9's found in dodges. One reason why I'd love to put a B3.9 into my F150.

  • how is the power tho? i know it comes 130 stock but what about torque? jw thinking about doing this to my s10 zr2

  • @CUNextTuesday56 goog day stock on this one was only 100 hp it was pretty dead till i changed the turbo housing and turned in the fuel screw a little wow what a differance read all the replys , there is lots of info thanks for looking Clayton A

  • does it have a turbo?

  • Are you using the Tahoe's dashboard and speedo at all?

  • @gkh7890 hello yes I am you still need the 5.3l computer to run the dash the compushift has a input for the speedo sensor and has a output to drive the speedo call if i can help you Clayton A 250-426-4413 thanks for looking!!!

  • Looks great. I'm working on a 98 Suburban 4BT right now. What torque converter did you use with the 4L80E?

    Thanks

  • @TheSojourner08 good day I am using the 4l60e trans I talked with a pro racer and he said the 4 bt is a little low on power(stock) to use a diesel convtor( low stall ) he suggested very strong to use the stock gas (5.3l) one It works great as is. very pleased how it pulls from a stop. thanks for looking Clayton A

  • why didn't you put a 6bt in

  • @aspennator the six is alot heavyer i was looking for better feul milage more then power It has good power since i put a better turbo housing on from Gillett diesel wow what a diff. for only $200. thanks for looking Clayton A

  • should have put a durimax in it

  • how slow is it

  • at 62 mph it is 1800 rpm at 2700rpm it is about 85 or 90 mph with 3.73 gears and the overdrive it is preety good on the highway thanks for looking Clayton A

  • Those engines sound kike tractors.

  • I love it. Look at all the room in the engine bay now.

  • Holy shit! It sounds like a tractor lol good job tho

  • Hey there, Just checking in. Hows one of thr best engines ever built doing? Is your trans handling the torque ok? Try any alternative fuels yet? Hope all's well

  • Awesome truck , keep up the videos my new friend

  • no troble so far yes the 4l80e would be better but it cost money to up grade. the 60 is working great but i do not tow any kind of heavy loads. just got back from Mexico trip of 5300 kms(3300 miles) worked great got 30mpg average Can. (25mpg US) thanks for looking Clayton A

  • how do the 4l60 trans manage to hold all this torque??

    why not go 4l80?

  • Would it be any different if the vehicle is a 4WD?

What about all the wiring? Did all of that match up?

Was it hard to get everything to line up?

  • @XxClemsonTigersXx same set up ideas the4x4 is a little more crouded on the oil pan near the frt diff wiring is a little tricky you use the same oil temp senders so don't cut those wires cummins needs a 12v wire to run the motor i got a gm book on line with great wire diagrams. you end up with lots of wires in the end that i cut off. motor mounts are not to bad to build but you have to build them as u cant buy them. thanks for looking Clayton A

  • @NelsonandClayton

Did you write up a thread on a forum? Im planning on doing this in the near future but on an expedition.

  • no I did not cause i did not want a computer to run the motor, just the good old way with mecanical injector system.. Check out in a week or so a new vidio about the new turbo housing. and a trip to mexico that one tank of fuel i got 40. MPG (Can) 34 US MPG thanks for looking

  • Did u think about installing a duramax???

  • sorry for a slow anwser as we were on a trip to Mexico check out our vidio that we will post soon about our trip and the fuel milage. yes it is the stock trans 4l60e it works great with the compushift thanks for looking Clayton A

  • so what transmission are u using the 4l60e?

  • what was the final cost once all was said and done? I'd love to do this with my 01 Z71 if the motor goes bad

  • @XxClemsonTigersXx engine was 4500 adaptor was 1000 trans controller (compushift) 900. and all the work some say about 4000 labour to pay someone to do all the work i enjoy this kind of work as it is a real challenge compared to the every day job of fixing cars thanks for looking Clayton A

  • I live in Texas and air conditioning is a must. I've been thinking about this same swap in my 93 Suburban. Is there a way to add an ac compressor to the 3.9?

  • @scoobytuff good day I added a second pulley to the ider to drive the ac i used the serpintine belt but it is realy hard to line up perfect so the belt runs true. next time I would us a v-belt because it has more forgiveness as u line it up to the motor pulley. cummins has diferant drive pulleys for the idler. I welded up a braket to mount the ac solid and used a ider to adjust the belt tension. hope this helps. Clayton A

  • how did you mount the motor itself? did you have to cut the cross member or oil pan or anything like that?

  • @296turbo I used 1991 dodge diesel engine mounts as they work good and NAPA is only $20.00 use a rear sump oil pan no cuting the frame but it is a little tight. I welded my own mounts to the engine and to the frame. the dodge mounts are what is in between the two. hope this helps Clayton A

  • Awesome rig, if you want 30mpg play with your torque converter, and look into fuel injectors. The stock injectors are fine, but they're based of OLD technology look at a set of POD injectors, not only a significant power boost, but a nice mpg bump, and lower egts, two other simple things to look at would be an intercooler, and/or water/methanol injection. Both add quite a bit of power, good mpg gain, and much lower egts. Low egts equal longer engine life. best of luck with your project.

  • @ARK842001 thanks for looking where is a good place to bye the injectors(pod) ??? are they the same for a 6bt as the 4bt I am in contact with a guy in Oregon to build me a preforance Turbo to spin it up faster. it has a lot of lag time to get the boost up. any ideas I am limited with room on the exaust out let to the firewall thanks for your help

  • @NelsonandClayton

Gillett Diesel. These Guys know their stuff and have seriously good prices. The injectors are made by Lucas, and POD stands for Prince Of Darkness. Why this name I do not know seems like a name a 14 year old would come up with, none the less a fantastic product. If you're having lag problems new injectors will help, also adjusting injector timing will help. If you're running the stock turbo and want a better spooling option you might consider is an HX30. One can be had

  • @NelsonandClayton

for around $300 on evilbay. Oh and yes the injectors should fit your application, although you may have to get a set of adapter sleeves, but I would call them and ask. If you're planning on running more boost you should really consider using a intercooler, and/or water injection. Think of it as insurance, you really don't want your egts to get too high as this lower the life span of any diesel engine drastically. One more option to get MPG, power, quicker spool, and lower

  • @NelsonandClayton

egts is a P-series in line fuel pump. I like the P 7100 for the 4BT. As you can see there are a lot of options out there. I hope that somewhere in my ramblings you find something that helps. again best of luck.

  • @ARK842001 hello again got a hold of Gillett Diesel, awsome guys . told me i had a 16cmm 2 turbo housing. told me to buy a 12cm 2 housing it was $200. installed on friday, wow at 50mph i punched it and it took 6 secs to go from 2 psi boost to 13 psi on old one now it takes 2 secs and i get 18 psi boost. thank you so much for helping me out now it is time to do a milage test on a trip i will up date you in the new year as we plan to drive to Mexico for Christmas A 3000 m trip

  • @NelsonandClayton

That's great news, I'm glad they were able to help you arrive at one of your goals. Contrary to what some tuners will tell you when it comes to turbos bigger is not always better. Cummins B-series engines are in the top two diesel engines, so you have a great base to work from. I hope you get many years of good use out of it. I'm actually in the process of putting a 6BT in my Landcruiser, I'll be posting vids as the build rolls on. Best of luck, and keep the questions coming.

  • 0:22 Thats a cool badge

  • Sounds like my dads telehandler.

  • nice a chevy with a cummins

  • You have me intrigued. I really want to put a 4BT in my 02 F150 to replace the V6 that's in it. Seeing the the previous engine was controlled by the computer, how do you keep the dash from lighting up due to the fact your running a mechanically injected engine? Also would you have to swap out the fuel pump?

  • @zapityzapzap Good day - I found the wire that comes from the engine computer to turn on the engine light and then I cut it. I ended up using this wire on a temperature sender to turn on if the engine gets hot - as a warning light. I removed the stock fuel pump from the fuel tank and installed a sump with a screen type filter in the bottom of the tank. Call me if I can help you more - evenings is usually better for me - 250-426-4413 Clayton

  • You'll get at least +2 mpg if you advance the timing like in my video. Just takes a few wrenches.

You running a bone stock 4L60E and Stock torque converter that was behind the 5.3?

I can tell you right now if you are using the stock torque converter from the tahoe. you are loosing alot of MPG there that thing stalls at 1800 rpm with the cummins you want about a 1400 stall torque converter so it's not slipping under normal acceleration

  • Very very well done sir. I have always loved the look of the tahoe. I'd drop a twin turbo cummins monster in that thing though and really surprise the hell out of some other ppl. Hahaha

  • where did you get those decals?

  • how much did it cost to do the conversion with the engine and the compushift?

  • @MrCzechowski

good day paid 4500 for the motor,1000 for the compushift. 800 for the adaptor plate i did the work my self some say it cost about 4000 to do the labour. it is not hard to do if you can weld the wiring is tricky on this new of a truck but is doable. thanks,Clayton A

  • hella sick!

  • nice job! i take it you left the motor at stock output to get the mileage

  • Cool!
