From someone who frequently wears a beehive as an everyday style: It's easier with a rat. Put a bun form, your own rolled up hair from your hairbrush (not for me, but they did it in the 60s) or a small rolled sock under the top part- you have to backcomb less and it's much more stable throughout the day.
...Why not just backcomb your hair and pin it...then hairspray...simples.
