  • No, you weren't the only one scared shitless of this shark. Freaking nightmare fuel.

  • omg i was thinking about this song just like 3 seconds ago

  • Is this shark scarier looking than the one from The Muppet Show or less scary?

  • The shark looks like he is high and sounds like he is burping while singing.

  • Uncle Popcorn!!! Let's Do Thissss!!!!

  • Let's do this!!!! Uncle popcorn!

  • uncle popcorn new theme song

  • Uncle popcorn!!!!

  • Lets...Do...This

  • LETS DO THIS!

  • LET'S DO THIIIIIIS!!!

  • This is one of the bits I remember most fondly about Sesame Street. It still makes me laugh.

  • this scared me when i was a kid now i think its a riot

  • Epic!

  • I was scared too of the shark when I was younger. LOL

  • That shark looks like the same puppet used for Ethel Mermaid's "I Get A Kick Out Of U"?

  • God, this scared me so much as a kid, that deep guttral voice just terrified me...

  • Okay all you puppeteers out there.....the guy controlling the shark is (for some reason) using his non-dominant hand. What gives it away?

  • Just before the vid begins....that is the most MISERABLE looking clown I've ever seen!

  • I always thought this shark was evil and scary. I didn't realize he was actually just trying to educate me

  • Now I see why Kevin Clash took over the role of 3 of Brian's characthers when Brian left the show in 1984. They have very similar voicing abilities.

  • Elmo, Clementine, and Nobel Price.

  • Who does the Shark?

  • Brian Muehl.

  • I was a little scared of this when I was a kid, lol. THANKS so much for posting this! I've looked for it before, and hadn't found it.

  • At the end he says, "Couldn't you just eat me up?" YES, PLEASE!! Shark meat is DELICIOUS!

  • I liked the shark :P

    He looks squsihy LO

  • The shark didn't scare me when I was a lad. But I still thought he was pretty mean looking and I wanted to punch him.

  • I always loved this shark.

  • YES!

This shark terrified me as a kid.

  • HAHAHA! OMG! My mom always tells the story of how I ran into the bedroom from the living room after seeing this!

  • Eh, he's a shark. He doesn't need to brush his teeth, because he'd replace them all the time, as sharks do.

  • YES that shark did used to scare me too! But for some reason it's so different when watching now. :D

  • That shark never scared me, not even as a kid.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I have been looking for it ever since my daughter started her obsession with brushing her teeth! It was one of my favorite segments when I was little! Yay!!!! Long Live Sesame Street!!!! :)

  • Hey, I'm confused-is the shark a regular muppet or is he computer animated? Just wondering.

  • This thing debuted in the late '70s or early '80s. He's definitely a Muppet.

    Awesome vocals, by the way.

  • Yeah, Brian Muehl has a really great voice. I really like the gurgling sound he makes in this song.

  • How DID he make the gurgling sound? I thought it was COOL, too!

  • I don't think he did anything to make it. It's just that he's got a naturally gruff, cool-sounding voice! (It worked really well as Telly, too.)

  • OH! It's the SAME person? COOL!

  • WAS the same person.

  • Aw! He passed away? I hope he'll be in Heaven with me, so I can meet him!

  • No, he didn't die. Brian left "SS" in 1984. Marty Robinson took over the role that year and has been playing it ever since.

From what I know, Brian Muehl's still alive and well.

  • Ah! THAT was this meaning if "WAS". Thank you for clearing that up. {WHEW!} I pray that he is a Christian. If not, I pray that someone shows him how Jesus can save him. This I pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  • No problem. I see how that was confusing for you.

  • "At the site of my white, bright, longer than long, strong, perfectly pearl white teeth!!!!" LOL!!! I loved this growing up...

  • Is it just me, or does it sound like Brian Muehl was blowing bubbles in a glass of water when singing this? It would make sense, since it's underwater

  • I loved this when i was a kid... thanks for posting it ;)

  • "Jump with delight"?.... to see a shark?

    Crazy... Love it though.

  • Heck yeah that thing used to scare me! Especially on the zooming in close-ups.

  • Yeah, I first saw when I was one year old. Mom ran in the room when she

    heard me scream.

  • same here!

  • This shark scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!

  • This shark absolutely scared the shit out of me as a child.

  • I second that!

    Classic indeed!

  • HAHAHA I missed this video

  • Omg I thought I was the only person terrified of this when I was little. As soon as I saw the ocean scene and the goofy music started I would run from the room screaming. I owe a few sleepless nights to this bastard.

  • I am amazed to see this again! This scared the hell out of me as a kid. But now I think the shark sounds like Gene Simmons from Kiss. Am I the only one? Let me know.

  • When I was little, I got up and danced to this song everytime. The shark is groovy, and the music is just swinging!

  • I wasnt afraid of the shark because his cock-eyes reminded me of cookie monster. Besides, in my chid-mind any monster which SINGS cant be all bad!

  • Has anyone else noticed that the lyrics are similar to the opening lines of 'Mack the Knife'? My brother could have sworn that the shark actually sang 'Mack the Knife' or a parody thereof.

  • this scared the living daylights outta me when i was little.

  • The teeth of a shark are constantly falling out and being replaced. The animals's scales are made of the same material.

  • this scared me so bad as a kid and after i saw this i had an irrational fear of being eaten by sharks in my sleep. i also once went in my cousins basement, and when i got down there he told me there was sharks in his basement and i cried.

  • this is absolutely the greatest thing ever recorded in the history of all video! oh happiness!

  • That was fantastic! The shark has a great voice!

  • Anyone know how this shark puppet is performed? I'm guessing chroma key effects were used, but the scene looks too seamless for the analog technology of the time.

  • Not chroma key. The performer dressed in black and performed on the black backdrop.

  • That is also called Bunkaru puppetry

  • I remember this. The shark is so cute. Everytime the camera zoomed into the sharks teeth twice that always scared me when I was a kid everytime he did that I hid behind the sofa or hugged my nanna and grandad until the shark was big to it's normal size. I love the bit when he says can't you just eat me up so cute. The shark is so cute because he sings really good. Has anyone got the segment of Etheal mermaid singing I've got a kick out of you? If anyone has that video please upload it on here.

  • telly? They don't even sound alike.

  • But the thing is that it depends what species you are. Not all are ferocious.

  • haha i'm gonna go brush my teeth

  • That same shark also jumped into Ernie and Bert's fishing boat one time, only he had a different voice in that skit.

  • Yes I remember that skit. I think that shark was also voiced by Jim Henson with Ernie in that skit. I was able to tell because his voice also sounded a little bit like Ernie/Kermit The Frog (Kermit The Frog was also voiced by Jim Henson) and the sharks laugh sounded just like Ernie's laugh in that skit.

  • Also, this same shark was in a skit with Grover called "Global Grover" where Grover said that he traveled to another country to make a tye dye shirt and when he swam in an ocean back to Sesame Street he said that he lost his shirt in the ocean. Then this same shark came to Grover wearing Grover's tye dye shirt saying "did you lose this in the ocean?" Grover said yes, and let the shark keep it, and then the shark gave Grover a ride back to that country so Grover can make another shirt.

  • Also, the shark was in a '90's skit "When I Get a Kick Out of U", in which he gets kicked by the mermaid on the letter U, every time she says the song's title.

  • Did he have the same voice in that skit?

  • Not exactly. In the Kick Out of U skit, his voice I belive had soul to it: "Oh, T and V don't appeal to her. She's nice and what's between them". His voice sounded a bit gruff and a little deep.

  • I'm guessing Kevin Clash voiced that shark in that mermaid skit.

  • Maybe but either way you just GOTTA feel sorry for him everytime Ethel kicks him especially at the end of the song when she kicks him so hard he's sent flying into oblivion.

  • I'm pretty sure this sketch is from either 1980 or 1981

  • Yep, it's from 1980.

  • I wonder if the performer need a monitor to see what he was doing.

  • I loved this shark when I was young. I always felt his bark was worse than his bite.

  • yeah i was totally scared of the shark! was this the same puppeteer who did/does Telly?

  • Yes, Brian Muehl played both.

  • When did Martin Robinson (I think that's his name) take over for Telly?

  • 1984. Only when Marty Robinson first started performing Telly, he imitated the voice Brian used for Telly, but then it slowly evolved into the voice Telly has today (it began to sound like today's telly around maybe 1988 or 1989)

  • OK, thank you. I wasn't aware that Telly had two Muppeteers.

  • I was also very scared of this shark too when I was very young. Everytime the camera did a close up into the sharks mouth showing his teeth at 0:40-0:41 and 1:15-1:16, I always would start to cry, and sometimes I would turn the television off if this skit would come on, and sometimes I would run out of the room and start crying until this skit was over.

  • I think this was performed in the style of Bunkaru puppetry, where several puppeteers wearing black body suits operate the puppet, hence the black background where the puppeteers become invisible.

  • Somebody explain to me what he meant by "couldn't you just eat me up?"

  • It's like saying "Aren't I cute? Aren't my teeth just the s***?"

  • Where have you been?
