Can the UP do this, except paint 3985 in Rio Grande speed lettering. I mean the Clinchfield challengers were originally D&RGW locomotives and the UP now owns the D&RGW system. Would be a cool heritage run with 1989 also in the consist.
So considering the Clinchfield Challengers were ex Rio Grande how bout the UP paint up the 3985 in a Rio Grande flying herald and run it over the moffat on there own road. :)
And to think to get to Cincinnati and to travel on the old C&O to Huntington to get relettered for the Clinchfield the 3985 traveled on the old L&N Short Line near me to get to that line, that would have been amazing to see.
I saw this on a bus as railgroup trip to Super Steel in Schenectady NY. I pointed out to one of the group leaders that this video is appropriate as in Schenectady was the orginal place of ALCO and that the UP Challengers were built by Alco, he was stunned by what I said.
We went out to see this engine pulling the Christmas train, at Waycross I think - an incredible sight.

I wish this was still a common sight.

Even across the entire CSX(T) system. CSX(T) disappoints by not letting steam on their rails.

Love how when the challenger was lettered for the clinchfield it was pulling the union pacific tenders and passenger cars.

It was 19 years today that Clinchfield 676 pulled the 50th Anniversary of the Santa Claus Special.

I love how Santa Claus and his helpers just toss presents off the back forcing the kids to mill around on the tracks.

The last of the Clinchfield Challengers was 675. 676 never existed.
