  • I went to a 'free school' for a while during high school. This was in the 70's, and enjoyed very much. One of the teachers brought her baby to class and we had fun playing with her. Some of the boys had never held a baby. Next generation: during daughter's high school years, even though it was not Montessori school, the teachers let her go at her own pace. And she did not skip school or lose interest. Great video, thankyou!!

  • I went to a montessori school. I never learned to read well. I'm 19 now and I still have problems with reading. In class I'm having a hard time reading something out loud. I was good in math, I pretty much only did math in primary school. I think I had too much freedom to learn whatever I wanted. Not sure if this freedom was that good for my childhood.

  • @DrOMFG: I'm sorry you have trouble reading. :( Were you at an AMI school? AMI teachers are trained to recognize Sensitive Periods and guide children to the work they are ready for. In an AMI school, children do choose their own work, but there is so much structure, and children do not just learn one subject. The problem with Montessori is that anyone can use the name without being a true Montessori school. It's best to go to amiusa.org to see which schools are certified.

  • ... not about giving children free choice of what and when to learn. The choice phase requires the rigid methods as preschoolers.

  • There are some preschools using portions of the Montessouri method and these children tend to have behavior and learning problems when they enter public school. Montessouri is not about giving them child

  • This method requires specially trained teachers and assistants. It requires children entering the program by age three. Unless the rigid methods are used before school age the methods will not be very effective.

  • 00:40 Seems like that little girl is getting high sniffing paint.

  • this video makes me sad because i wasnt privileged enough to have this experience and that i probably wont be able to afford for my children to have this experience either. what's wrong with people? why wont public schools switch to this method?

  • @watergirl28 There are so many different books out there that allow parents to teach their children with the Montessori method. No child should be cheated of a proper education.

  • OOO i wnt for day care, preschool, prek, an first. mum still works ther!!!! ily montessori!!!! i wanna go bak nxt yr!!! am in 7 grade- robious rox, 2!

  • What do you think about using this kind of education with mentally deficient children?

  • i attended a montessori school that taught pre-k - 8th grade. I only attended during my 7th and 8th grade years, but it wasnt much different that public school. I did notice that kids where really smart, there were kids in pre-k that were reading on a 1st grade level. The parents that would apply there kids would camp out just to make sure their kids got in.

  • Monstessori is great. They have incredible imaginations, are very creative, which is needed for the future thinkers of the world. I have seen so much success with their system of schooling. It is wonderful.

  • Do these children go on to top colleges? What professions do they take on later in life? Are they prepared to take the SAT's. What are the test scores like or do they test?

  • @k1rubino I've wondered the same, I have a friend that raves about his 9 year old in Montessori education but he fails any test given to him. My friend answers "they eventually get it."

Standardized tests don't agree with this method but this method may be better in a lot of areas.

  • Search on "Google Founders Talk Monetssori" and watch their interview with Barbara Walters. They credit Montessori with their success. Also Google Angeline Lillard for research on this subject.

  • @k1rubino @ericedvid2 I actually went to the same school that Sergey Brin went to... He came in to visit when I was in around 3rd grade I think, back when the internet wasn't too big yet. It was a very small school called Paint Branch Montessori School. A wonderful school I loved it.

  • @k1rubino

    1) The longer they stay in the Montessori system the more likely they'll be going to a top college

    2) All sorts but no matter what professions, they're usually seen as leadership material

    3) lol, more than ready for SATs

    4) It's been documented that Montessori students, on average, do much better than students of tradition education presentation.

They do the same thing regular schools do; the only difference is the delivery method of presenting the education. Great 4 ANY kid

  • @k1rubino "Do these children go on to top colleges?"

Some people that go to top colleges end up being responsible for the deaths of millions, others are responsible for the misery entire counties_ Raising a child with moral character, values for personal responsibility, individualism, respect, and community_ Parents want to raise good people before good students_

  • @evandonghue2 That goes without saying. Most parents realize that they are responsible for the childs moral charachter. They must also look out for the childs education, the question was perfectly legitimate.

  • My 3yr old son attends montessori in Sydney Australia..and its the best thing to ever happen to him..he absolutely loves it, he adores his teachers, his teachers adore him, its a warm learning environment...and they genuinely care for each individual childs needs..i dont feel anxious leaving him behind because i TRUST his teachers who make sure that he is safe. The children are nurtured and loved, they become confident within themselves and successful later in life...

  • towards the end of this film i got quite emotional. this concept seems so logical..let the child explore at their own pace. I feel kinda cheated i went to a "average/normal" school. I hope I can find a school that adopts such methods for my son. I am very much a visual person that learns from experience rather than being TOLD what I should think or learn. I never had such freedom to learn at my own pace. Shame.

  • @chubbychilli A good question for all of us would be to aks ourselfes "Why arnt there more schools like this?"

Because we dont have teachers who are ready to spend so much time with children, who arnt paid properlz for there serveses.

Schools such as this are integrated into the surrounding and use the sources of the town they are in... And familys have to interact on a higher level with the school.

Have a look at the jena-plan schools, and the laborschule bielefeld.

    Such schools are seldom:(

  • @chubbychilli

Consider homeschooling if it's at all possible. You can incorporate these ideas into your child's education. They can learn from the world around them, move at the pace that suits them (which is likely faster since they're not waiting for help in a large class and learning bad habits), and learn the things actually necessary to be a happy, successful, and self determined adult. It only takes a few hours a day, 4 days a week to stay a little ahead of traditional school.

  • @oimedic I'd also suggest finding other homeschooled groups in the area so that the children can be around kids their own age.

  • At what age is it good to begin to take our child to a Montessori school?

  • There are schools that will take infants. They have materials to help muscular coordination like kicking balls or pulleys, and various things to build awareness like low mirrors and activities where they follow a ball with their eyes as it rolls inside a box.

However, if you want to make sure a child has the full benefit of a Montessori education, they must be in by 3 or 4 years old. 5 is a stretch. By 6 many "sensitive periods" are over, and it becomes much harder. 3-6 is very important.

  • excellent video, as student whose graduating in human development, I found this to be very enlightening.

  • I personally think, having been to a montessori school, that although it was a beatiful experience, I was only there for a short time, and when I went to "big school" if you will, it was a completely different experience, there was pressure, deadlines, coursework, and it was seldom hands on. There is no point in sending your child to a montessori pre-school if you don't intend on continuing in montessori, it's a big schock to the system, a shock I'm still getting over!

  • Oh my, sorry for your bad experience. I totally disagree. I think if you spend at least 3 years in early childhood or early el in a SOLID, true Montessori program it teaches you how to learn and that learning can happen where ever. I attended Montessori school from kindergarten through 4th grade, and had no trouble transitioning to traditional public school. In fact, I loved school until high school. So, don't discount a good Montessori program!

  • Each Montessori School has it's differences. Keep that in mind too.

  • You should watch "Google Founders Talk Montessori." They credit their pre-school Montessori education with their success. Not being genius', not Stanford, but Montessori. Both went but they met at Stanford.

  • @ricechas

that is totally not true at all. Perhaps it was your short stint that aided in your problems of readjusting but it is widely documented that Montessori students are more advanced on average in college than students from the regular traditional way of education presentation and anyways, students do have readjusted issues from school to school regardless of what kind of school.

It is a brilliant system. We scraped the $ together for our kids and it's worth every single penny.

  • why do they use cursive writing? When they are older all they would need to know is how to sign there name.

I hope they are learning computer skills as well.

  • I went to a Montessori school until 11th grade, this is in opinion the best way of learning.

  • I really like this video and feel that it showcases so many wonderful things about the Montessori curriculum. For example, there seemed to be a special needs boy in the classroom. Although the misconception is that Montessori is for "normal" children, this video shows that Montessori is for everyone!

  • i want to download

  • You can embed it using the embed code.

  • hello! i'm a freshmen college student studying early childhood education with the focus on montessori education

is montessori education very famous in america?

because i'm very curious with this montessori education.....=)

  • There are about 5,000 Montessori public and private schools in the United States.

  • wow! i was hoping that i could go work abroad in united states....=) tnx for replying

  • Beautiful!

  • I am a Montessori teacher and it is the most awesome, kind education, respecting the child without restrictions found in public schools, if the child wants to speak they do not have to raise their hand, if they want a drink or go to the bathroom they just go without adult permission. This education is all about peace, does not sound like Karl Marx. In fact Hitler wanted Maria Montessori to teach in his schools as did musolini and she declined. You must have gone to a bad school. Sorry

  • Karl Marx, I just don't see it and you obviously did not go to a Montessori School?????

  • You wouldn't see it from watching this video.

  • Informative video.

  • I am now in college and I am very proud to say that I began my education at a Montessori school. I studied there until primary school. A year after, I transferred to a public school and noticed the big difference in the teaching style and the cognitive level of the students.

I long for the days in which I was able to enjoy learning in the Montessori way. Where I was able to learn things independently and at my own phase.

  • i go to montessori but i really love the fact that the teachers are so helpful they really take the time to work with each and every child at his or her own pace.

  • I just started a job as a teacher assistant at a Montessori school...and it's freaking awesome. These kids are so self-sufficient, and much calmer than kids at private school. In the toddler classroom, they have these little kids setting the table and serving eachother food...its' the cutest thing ever. :)

  • Is a Montessori school considered a "private" school? I didn't realize that this type of education could continue to high school. Anyone know if there are any in MN (beyond kindergarten that is)? I thought it was all based around toddlers...

  • Yes, there is one in MN.

    Winona...

  • Montessori is a lot of fun, I teach pre k! =)

  • Great video for parents looking for an appropriate school for their children. Gives an accurate account of what the Montessori method is, particularly for preschoolers.

  • I want to teach in a montessori school.

  • =]

    I go to Montessori.

It's a fun school. Because we get to use everything that there is.

And we don't have desks or anything, and we just sit at some random table when wanted.

But in 7-8 grade, we have more of a high school way of things, with having a schedule of each class we have to go to, but it all happens in the same room.

It's only to help transfer schools, to go to the more strict way of High School.

  • what grade r u in now?

  • This is so awesome!!! I remember all the materials in this video! I went to Montessori from primary through 5th year and absolutely loved it. Utopia.

Here's something interesting that the video didn't mention. The kids call their teacher by his/her first name to promote mutual respect. We already knew the teacher was there to teach so there's no need to remind about their status. I thought it was the weirdest thing when I went to another school and the kids called their teachers by Mr./Ms. ***.

  • Have a high school example?

Also, what if the kid ends up doing the same thing over and over again forever. What if he doesn't get the basics (reading/writing, math, etc.). Is there some type of teaching schedule? I dono, seems good and all but could be bad for students who don't do much and need guidance and direction.

  • Educating for Peace goes through high school. There are still only a handful of schools that go through high school but they are growing. I have visited and shot at Clark Montessori in Cincinnati where students can attend public Montessori from early childhood through high school. It was recently given a "Bronze" award by the US News and World Report. Also children have the choice how long they want to do an activity. They move on at their own pace.

  • I REMEMBER SO MUCH OF THIS!!!

I went to Montessori for 7-8 years [I'm 16 now] and its seriously the best school system I've ever seen or experienced. Learning through discovery is a huge help for retention and actual understanding of concepts. AND it's fun!

  • this is a nice video, but does anyone know what happened to that video that started out showing a pregnant mothers tummy and was really wonderful? can anyone give me information about it...it was beautifully done!!!

  • anyone could give me a montessori GRADUATION THEME? I'll appreciate any response..i will owe you big time. Thanks so much..

  • The video is very informative especially for students taking Early childhood Education. I will surely use this video to familiarize my college students regarding Montessori approach in teaching. I hope to see more of Montessori practices and materials that chidlren use in the classroom. thank you

  • I watch this and wish school was like that for me. With all the problems I had, this style of learning would have made it so much easier. Thank you.

  • I just observed a montessori classroom and fell in love with this method!

  • my dream classroom!

  • i think all schools should be like this . icant learn anything in mine, becasue its too much teacher talking.

  • What's the starting salary for a montessori teacher with diploma qualification?

  • In the public schools, it's the same as other teachers. In private schools, it varies a lot. I would talk to training programs in your area to get a good sense of the market in your area.

  • awesome, im taking a montessori course now and this helped me explain to my mom what im learning =)

  • Hi I'm an AMS teacher, I made a website where Montessori enthusiasts can discuss, it is at montessoriboard-dot-com Look forward to chatting with you there!

  • Outstanding video ... having been involved in early childhood education many years ago and certified by Sister Angela of the Progressive Montessorians, it is so important that our culture adopt the Montessori philisophy today.

Our world will be renewed. Thank you for posting this.

  • Informative video. Can you post also on how to use montessori materials. Thanks.

  • YouTube is full of how to clips on how to use Montessori Materials.

If you look at my other videos, I have two examples.

  • Thank you for posting this.
