Still the greatest event in wrestling history. Sorry young ones.......if you weren't there you don't know. At that time Hulk Hogan was bigger than anybody had been before or has been since. There was no internet, no satellite tv, and few alternatives. Hogan was as famous as any celebrity or athlete on the planet and nobody has come even close to approaching what he was then. Wrestlemania 3 had huge crossover appeal and Hulk-Andre was epic.
jesse ventura said it best : this is the biggest match in the history of professional wrestling. and boy, was he ever right! =) RIP andre you are missed!
@kevinandperry2 Andre wasnt 7ft 5....that was wrestling 'hype/exaggeration'....WWE STILL claims 93,000 people were at this event, which is a MYTH...the records show there were actually 78,000
@shyjames83 78,000 bought tickets, the rest were given tickets for free. The same goes for the Royal Rumble in '96 in San Antonio when 3/4 of the building bought tickets and the rest were let in for free to sit in the nose bleeds.
@TheMadStork83 You mean the 97 Rumble....i know about 'comping' mate...but actually, there were only 78,000 people in the building at Wrestlemania 3...the 93,000 was a trumped up number that WWE has falsely claimed for so many years, many people actually still believe it.
There were more fans at the old Wembley at Summerslam 92 (82,000) than were on hand to watch Wrestlemania 3....comps/free tickets had nothing to do with the numbers.
@shyjames83 Completely false. The silverdome could fit just over 81,000 for a football game alone with no one sitting on the floor and in WM 3 people were sitting on the floor, maximizing the capacity of 93,000+ people. Looking at the famous nose bleed shot from WM 3, you can clearly see that the entire portion of the football stadium is filled, and with the people sitting on the floor, exceeds over the football capacity of 81,000+.
@shyjames83 : Incorrect. In 2002 I e-mailed the staff at the Pontiac SIlverdome myself and they confirmed that the 93,173 was an actual record. It was in the Guinness Book of World Records as an actual stat, and was reinterated when the NBA broke that record in 2010 with the All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium with 109,000 for a sporting event. I don't know what people think they are getting out of disputing that record or why they think WWE made it up.
Cont: It's not like that information couldn't be easily researched by someone picking up a telephone or e-mailing like I did to find the truth. What benefit would if be for the people that work at the Silverdome to lie? I also don't understand what difference paid tickets and free tickets make either. If I had a choice to pay BIG BUCKS to see Hulk Hogan VS. Andre The Giant for WWF title or see it free live, guess which option I'm choosing? It's a common sense issue.
Finish: As MadStork83 mentioned, it's very easy to get those numbers when you have 80,000 for normal sporting events. 10-15,000 can easily fit on the stadium floor and added to the 81,000 normal seats 93,000 is plenty easy to maintain. WWE lies about a lot of things, but the 93,173 indoor-attendance record for Wrestlemania III was one of the few truthful things they have bragged about. I can speak of Wembley or any place else, but the Silverdome record was real for 23 years.
What stadium was this?

Check out the three count at 4:28 throughout his carear Hogan's biggest flaw as a wrestler was that he often had problems with timing.
