  • My left ear enjoyed this

  • Everybody must get stoned !

  • left audio only :(

  • I really like this song, i'm glad i went to Vietnam, and saw almost everything for a

young person like me back then, my company very close to the flight line i would

take a walk there and smell the avation fuel as the jets take off for a sorty in the bush, i was at DaNang Air base 1st M.P. Bn. FLC U.S.M.C., i remember all the songs, and Goodmorning VietNam I remember that too, won't forget.

  • @loneowl71 Good on you mate! You are right to be proud to have served your country. I love the way (most) Americans get behind their servicemen irregardless of the politics behind the conflict. I'm a Brit & got spat at on my return from Iraq whilst wearing uniform. Got Afghan coming up this year - deep joy....!

  • I hate being a teenager today. I want to live in the 60s, running through the meadows smoking crazy stuff and fornicating with flowery blondes.

  • i@sunonthewindow ... man, i don't blame you, that is musically speaking. the kinks, stones, the band, dylan, the zombies. love ... . the 60's musical scene was amazing here in la. it's only later that i realized how lucky i was. but, that was then. today, there are computers, the internet, youtube ... cheap software to create music, videos, artistic endeavors. but, i do like some artists like lady ga ga, madonna, and others.

  • wonderful stuff(both what they did here and what inspired them!)cheered me up with that summer vibe here in a freezing "grey town" in the uk

  • I'm only 13 and i listen to all of the old psychedelic music like The Byrds, The Doors, Electric Prunes, etc. This is definitely The Byrds best song. I love listening to it when i'm blazed out of my mind. Still can't wait to listen to it when i'm tripping. I wish music was still as good as this today.

  • fag

  • What's your problem dickhead, calling a 13 yr old a fag? Go fuck yourself Leper.

  • he's 13 and he does drugs

sounds like a fag to me

  • And you think you can abuse kids? Lowest of the low.

  • drugs r kewl

  • i'm not trying to promote drug use at all, but this song sounded so enlightening and amazingly bizzare when i was shrooming...it was perfect

  • I wanna get eight miles HIGH and enter the realm of the UNKOWN..

  • i'm too stoned to write anything..

  • These guys were peaking....timeless stuff....

  • When getting high was fun.......

  • There's something about this song...

Can't describe it but this might be one of the best songs ever.

  • I feel you

  • great guitar ! great psychedelic sound.

  • while supping on white shiraz, i deludably reckon they wrote this about my Soul! before i had to enter my mums gizzards! (apologies bout the punk language but I am a punk)

  • What kind of punk says proudly that he is sipping a white shiraz? XD

  • Byrds invented fusion with Eight Miles High.

They were years ahead of the others.

  • Amen to that

  • Why are so many people ranting on about politics and other stuff that has nothing to do with this song or rock in general?

    :x

  • I could loop this on headphones for the rest of my life.....ah but then i'd need to find space for Are You Experienced? - i'll alternate them...!!just too damned good.

  • this song is one of the best psychedelic pop songs ever...it made me very happy on my shroom trip

  • Shock-a-Billy made a tripy version also...

  • this song is efin awesome!

  • I get chills everytime I hear this song. My favorite Byrds song. Great!

  • Gene Clark-tastic!!!

  • Psychdelic music is psychic freedom.

  • I listen to this song and I just drift away into my groove.... I'm gone man, solid gone...

  • I remember the '60s, days of phychedelic posters and black lights, and songs such as this playing.

  • Sherman set the wayback machine for 1965

  • lol! the same social engineers that started this stuff determine what republicans and democrats do.

  • i love physically music, it sounds even better when your on acid

  • Do you mean, 'psychedelic' music?

  • Oh God that is funny. HAHAHA, what a doughnut

  • I would have thought that it was physically impossible for a Republican to appreciate any music from the counter culture of the 1960's. It's totally against eveything that they stand for. I would say that Doris Day would be more suitable!!

  • so true

  • In my opinion a McCain supporter could not possibly enjoy this music. If you really were listening to the music and its message, it would instantly turn you into an Anarchist, or maybe a Democrat.

  • i don't think you know what you're saying. I'm the farthest thing ever from a left-wing democrat and I love this type of music.

  • I think that it's your type of stupidity that divides people. While most performers are left-leaning, many fans of "counter-culture" bands from the 60's are/were huge Republicans, such as Ann Coulter who was a deadhead. Bob Weir even played at Bohemian Grove

  • hey f2002 didn't you mean help me ronda?

  • Yeah sure, like Lucy and Purple Haze (not LSD, but hashish) ... They just couldn't admit that was about acid.

  • Contrary to popular belief, this song is NOT about an acid trip. It was written about flying to London and looking at it from the air. Pay attention to the lyrics: they describe London in the 1960s.

  • Of course it's not about drugs *nudge nudge wink wink*.

  • Yeah - a flight to London when they were on acid...

  • It's a great song. It's so, so like acid...

  • John who???

  • hey bookstar i just want to say that I'm a republican and I support McCain, but that doesn't mean that I can't like this music. The Byrds rule. I'd appreciate it if people just kept their politics to themselves and just enjoyed the music.

  • This song was revolutionary. Nothing like it had ever been recorded. It was the first and most likely the best song of the psychedelic mid sixties. The Byrds were cutting edge in their day, introducing Bob Dylan to the masses, writing songs from a feminist viewpoint, exploring alternate sexuality (TRIAD). They had the most unique sound of any of the sixties bands with their tight harmonies and 12 string stereo electric Richenbacher guitars with Rick-o-sound.

  • Well, if they did suck live, it just shows you the value of good recorded tracks. Everyone in this band will be dead in twenty years, and noone will know the difference. Just makes you wonder what unknown music might get dredged up in the future, although not likely much that wasnt well known at the time.

  • this song is amazing

  • i love this!!=)

  • Any other word maybe that you know.Something we havent heard before hahahahahahaha

  • this song reminds me of black holes in outer space - 8 miles high , into event horizon with no return.

  • My grasshopper, celestial black holes are mega-eons beyond us...trillions of light years away from us. Miles are mundane and unused in space proximities.

  • yeah. . .you're kind of a douche for getting so critical on the issue.

  • Presumably you originate from another type of "black hole"...?

  • Load o' crap. There is almost certainly a black hole at the centre of this galaxy, about 26,000 light-years from where you uttered this ... stuff.

Second, nothing is "trillions" of light-years from us. The edge of the observable universe is approx 12-14 billion light-years. Trillions upon trillions of "mundane miles", yes - light-years, not so much.

  • Yes, you are partially correct, the observable Universe is 12 or 14 billion light-years from us, but that doesn't account for the rest of the Universe.

Quantum physics however, estimates that the Universe is about 10^32 light-years across.

Although I don't see how astrophysics has anything to do with psychedelic rock.

  • I don't see how creationists can believe that the existence of theh universe is 12,000 years with data like that!

  • My problem with the Byrds is they sucked live. Check the Monterrey clips. The drummer is terrible.

But the records are great. I guess they used session drummers.... and the band was sober.

  • lol.

  • DrCynic, in the 80s I saw Clapton with an unnamed guest who was not announced until they were about to appear - "Ladies and gentlemen, The Byrds." My jaw hit the floor. I believe it was McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby or Clark/Clarke (I'd never followed the band closely and wasn't up on the personnel). They played for about an hour and it was pure magic, one beautiful rendition after another, gorgeous harmonies, expert guitar, amazing songs. Oh, and Clapton was pretty good too. What a concert!

  • It must've been Crosby. Clark died young. I have seen reunion videos with McGuinn/Crosby/Hillman. One of them is their hall of fame introduction early 90s. And indeed they were pretty good. I think the problem in the 60s live versions really was 1-Clarke the drummer, 2- drugs, and 3-the difficulty of playing complex songs (instrumentally and vocally) when antique sound technology made it difficult to hear yourself. I'm sure Clapton's drummer was absolute tops so it was probably great.

  • Agreed - the drummer makes all the difference. I saw The Clash without the great Topper Headon and they were clearly missing him. One of the great big band leaders - maybe Ellington or Basie - said the drummer's is the toughest seat to fill. I think also of what Butch Trucks did/does for The Allman Brothers. "He had the power thing we needed," said Betts. And, yeah, there may have been more than one band that would have been better off with no drummer rather than the one they had. Cheers!

  • @Birkebine Topper confided in me [ we was in 'rehab' together :that it was all his fault that the CLASH 'split'..He was just doin' too much 'scag'/sm....'gouchin' out over the drums'...amazingly enough -from what I've heard :he's stil among the LIVIN'(yet JOE S. didn't make it!!!!)NEVER ASK WHY !!!I LOVE TOPPER!!!Tulasi(he knew me as Chris...at the PRIORY,Roehampton,Surrey...Nr.London(He usually wore aT-Shirt ,which siad :'HUGE FUKIN' PROBLEM'!!!If not i was a Dennis the Menace Jumper!!!!!!!

  • The Byrds have a great sound but no great songs. The music writing ability of the Beatles combined with the sound of the Byrds would have been an awesome combination.

  • This vid reminds me of my late teenage years which I spent pretty wasted on herbs. Making a cup of coffee could be a terrifiying experience and going to the corner store was an ordeal that often took an hour or two to re-cover from. Glad I stopped smoking. It just didn't suit me although it may be fine for some others. For me, reality can be trippy enough.

  • The Byrds are one of the greatest fucking bands on Earth

  • rock n roll!can't wait till my next holiday!peace out.

  • it's going to be so funny after november when all those propaganda or dead-run candidate messages posted everywhere on youtube are still there on the comment boards.we can look back and see how short-sighted people like johnmccain4prez08 really are.after seeing his messages i've progessed from being highly confident to highly convinced that obama will win next month.but who cares?this is a byrds video!!some people are stil posting ron paul messages and he's not in the race at all.lol.

  • That sounds like a propaganda comment to me. If you don't want to hear other people's political views o youtube, don't post your own.

  • i never said i never to want to hear other peoples views on anything.if you read those posts from that user i reffered to you'll see how it warranted the reaction it did from some people.''if you don't want to hear other peoples political views, don't post your own.''so if i disagree with someone or see BS i shouldn't say anything.well done,my friend, well done.

  • what information did i control?plus, this is the byrds:eight miles high and it's really silly that we're discussing something that has nothing to do with the video, the song or the music of the time.

  • I'm sooooooooooo sorry. I didn't see the posts that johnmccain4prez08 made. whichever party you support comments like that are unacceptable. It's people like him who give republican supporters bad names. Pleas accept my sincere apology.

  • shibe123, I Completly Agree With you, those fags are so fucking stupid

  • what happened to Byrds "Hey Joe " at Monterey , withdrawn since friday3 oct???

  • This song is actually about air travel, not LSD.

  • right on brother...im sick of these fags who hate good and love evil...

  • Geoge W is the dumbest president ever. He laughed at 9/11. Let's have another Vietnam in Iraq. What planet are you on, if I may ask?

And I wish I was 8 miles high just to escape from the likes of you.

Obama is no choice. What's the change he's promoting. US policitcs are scary and affect the whole world. Thanks a bunch.

  • See the biggest problem with Republicans, is they have shit taste in music.

  • Sarah Palin is a Honey though...

  • aye- a retarted one.

  • fuck you Righteous Brother. I'm a republican and I love the Byrds and other bands from that era just as much as you. Keep your opinions to yourself and enjoy the music.

  • The song of LSD!

  • very funny, now you can fornicate with sara

  • FUCK YOU NAZIS

  • And to think that I devoted my life to the consumption of illegal substances because I liked this song. If I had known it's real meaning I would have been a pilot instead. oh well, what can you do

  • The song was composed by Gene Clark after a traumatic (for him) tour of the UK. He called it 6 miles high as that is the height of a jetliner. Mcguinn changed it to the more dramatic 8 miles high. The nifty lyric Rain grey town was added by Crosby. The brilliant Coltrane inspired arrangement was created by all 5 Byrds.

  • Bush/McCain and the Neocon's Primary Agenda:

    Privatize the Profits:

To allow for unrestrained monopoly building and profiteering by the wealthy elite under the guise of a bogus "free market" mantra.

    Socialize the losses:

Get the tax payers to cover the bail out costs when the greedy super corporations screw up or when the financial markets collapse due to deregulaton and unrestrained speculation.

    Stop Corporatism!

For the UNITED States of America!

    For We The People!

    Vote Obama/Biden 08!

  • i like this

  • Awesome harmonies. Very tough to beat, and it still sounds great to this day. Possibly their best song.

  • Ultimately, he's getting a rise out of y'all by playing a strawman game poorly and trolling the video.

I'm a conservative, but also a HUGE fan of the Byrds. As a critical thinker, I also think Bush is an ass.

Interestingly, Roger swore this song was about flying into London on a plane, IIRC, not that I believe him as such (eight miles ~ 42,000 ft)

  • What's worse, JMC4P's idiotic banter, or the fact that some of you believe he's genuine?

Let's see some of the image suicide he's ostensibly pushing McCain with:

Makes remarks accusing public figures of being gay, check

Refers to alleged strategy of continuing and total war, something no sane man would ever cite positively and has been drummed up by such sources as the Guardian. Yep.

Cites McCain as being the continuation of the Bush Legacy, despite the fact they dislike each other. Yep.

  • There were many categories beginning in the middle of the 60´s in the wake of beatles and stones. nitty-gritty-bands popped up, and the byrds sang as well beatmusic as psychedelic ones. I remember the visit of the beatles in the usa meeting Bob Dylan and the Byrds. In all probability this was the signal of Sgt. Pepper and the starting shot per se of the psychedelic music.

  • Possibly the best psychedelic song ever - even beats the Beatles and the Stones...that opening is unbeatable, and the rest, oh well..fucking high. dont try to talk to right-wingers - they are lower than animals and they ruin a good high, thats fer sure. SOmeone needs to turn the lights on in this video. Its all the sandwiched imagery - not enough light can get through.

  • Beautiful, man. Best reason I ever read to vote Democrat. Thanks man.

  • Its fine, you can hate whoever you want as long as it helps you cope with the fact that you are the kinfd of redneck, hillbilly, backwards trash resulting from the complete destruction of the southern education system during the civil war, although you spew your ignorant opinions that have no basis in fact with much vigor, there are fortunately enough intelligent people in the world to keep you in the bottom where you belong

  • This is one of the best Byrds songs written. Loved the harmony in that piece. And you're right on the opening.

And as for the right-wingers, IMHO, it depends on the individual rightist. I'd trust a John Bircher or a Ron Paul-style Libertarian over a McCain supporter or Bush backer any day. Those pro-McCain supporters upset me big time.

    U.S. out of Iraq! Peace!

  • Very cool.....

  • great song

  • fuckin love the byrds

  • this is some of the dumbest chatter i've ever witnessed. turn off the television.

  • Ignore the troll, kids. This lad can't possibly be an actual McCain supporter; from the "wit" of his channel description to the copypaste abuse, he's either chosen a theme to troll youtube with relentlessly or campaigning for Obama in an 'inventive' way.

  • No... on the contrary. We LOVE america. We hate fags. And all other peaceloving assholes... Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, Obama, Jesus... Whop. wait a minute. Jesus? Oh, was he for war in iraq? Or against war? Hm... can't rightly remember. Moron. Well, maybe you're talkin' about a different god. Allah maybe? Jehovah? Feels more like your type of warmongering god. So you're either an orthodox jew or a fundie muslem. But CHRISTIAN? no. not really if you're pro-violence.

  • Fuck me, they've let the ignoramus out again spewing his right wing, idiodic chatter. Plug your ears lads before you puke!

  • I don't know about the politics.....but I like the song. That's it.

  • Wow, you think some of us listen to this song because we are high on drugs? That is a good joke, man. : ) One of the best Byrds songs I have heard.

  • My name is Kenny Dobbins. I'm creating a new style of music called Ultimate Outlaw. It is a mixture of Country, Rock N Roll, Blues, Jazz and Bluegrass. I sure hope you'll support me and my music. My bands name is also the Ultimate Outlaws. It consists of my girlfriend Candace Quinton on Harmonica, my best friend Anthony Lampella on Keyboards, Steve Beebout on Electric Guitar, Jake Boyle on Electric Guitar, Josh Barnes on Bass, Griffon Freed on Drums.

  • do you have any empirical evidence to support the war?

  • you're a numpty

  • I guess it's time to disable the comments section for this video...

  • Fuck you dumbass, this is a legendary song. You should just shut the fuck up before you make yourself look even more uneducated.

  • you´ve gotta be drunk then

  • fUCKING FASCIST TWAT.BET YOU.V GOT AN ATOMIC AIR RAID SHELTER.WOT ABOUT NEW ORLEANS WEN THE HURRICANE STRUCK.FUCKIN BLACK.DONT FUCKIN MATTER.YOU CUNTS ARE GETTIN FOUND OUT EVERY DAYTHE QUICKER THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE HAPPENS THE QUICKER YOU PEOPLE WILL COMMIT SUICIDE AND THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE.SO FUCK OFF AND DIE,

  • money talks.bet your not black or wondering where your next meals coming from you brain dead fuckwit,

  • Funny. I don't recall too many memorable songs recorded by "commie" groups or "redneck" bands either. Funny that!

  • And i am a Scottish socialist. Fuck you American warmongers keep my country out of another Vietnam for you ignorant republican fucks. OBAMA for president!!!!!!!!

  • Check out "Fabled Enemies" Video! We are change! Pass it on ; )

  • Great video pity about the redneck yank commenting. people like you are the reason we still fight wars today. PEACE MAN!!!!

  • McGuinn borrowed, with acknowledgment, the main riff from John Coltrane's India. Check the most viewed version of this on Youtube at 1:35. All the greatest musicians are open to influence from anywhere. Coltrane was a huge factor in the psychedelic expression of the sixties, dying too soon the year that the Byrds released eight miles high.

  • WOOOW man, tell me what you're ON so I can get some.

  • im with you, that guy above u must get free coke from dubya , way too excited .....

  • i wouldn't call hippie music "communist" music. in many communist countries, like my east Germany, hippies were imprisoned and executed for listening to American "imperialist" music. in one particular case a young was forced to eat his joe cocker lp.

  • aye and will you be fighting i bet not ya fat bastard people die in war, im not a hippie or a communist sometimes wars must be faught but it very easy for you to sit on your fat arse and say make wars for no reason but will you give you life to the cause.

  • Have this with a joint and you're in bliss.

  • Rickenbacker ftw!

  • holy hell dude. seriously? ya know, if you actually want us peace lovin homosexuals, as you so kindly put it, to vote for mccain, thats probably not the best way to go about it...

  • When you can come up with an original thought of your own, post away. Until then, do the rest of us a favor and fuck off. You could have spared your inbred fingers and typed 'I'm a moron' for about the same effect.

  • Man you are invited to suck my balls!

  • Known fot its sound...

  • i love the BYRds.

    great tunes ...

rainin' outside and jammin to tha byrds

    5*****

  • Awesome music though

  • Get the off of U tube. You are stinking the place out

  • awesome song

  • People, can we like focus on the fucking music and not friggin' politics, geez!

  • what does any of this have to do with the Byrds?

  • I also think that you are a frightened little man, who is insecure outside of the narrow vision of the world given to you by so-called "experts."

  • SPELLING ERROR: Obama, not Obam...

  • By the way, this song is AWESOME!!!

  • JohnMcCain4Prez08: No, I am not for Obam at all. I would not vote for him in any circumstance. You need to realize, though, that him and McCain are the same. All politicians are. Why do they want to hold office? Why do they want to try and control others? I can assure you that the best qualified people for office will never seek it. Those who do seek it are phonies. We have too much government right now. It is time to cut much of it away.

  • white heat, sorry

  • Awesome! Better then any of today's crap!!

  • you sad little loveless man full of hatred and bile.

  • Wow. If you are for real, check your meds.

If you are joking, it's so far from funny...

  • Yeah, fuck YOUR America. Mine produced the sublime: Eight Miles High.

  • sit back and relax and enjoy the Byrds. They were way ahead of the curve. Here they are bringing rifts they learned from john Coltrane to rock and roll. I love Chris's dramatic bass intro. The song is just cool from start to finish.

  • LOL im laughin cause you gota be kidding. Figure if you were for real you woulda said Ronald Reagan or Richard Nixon as Greatest President. but yea Racism isnt cool and Iraw is worthless.

  • I think this is one of the dumbest reactions I read so far on youtube. Your IQ level is probably that of a very little mouse with the mouth of a lion sitting in a corner thinking that war is the answer to all world wide problems.

  • Are you joking? Because it's not funny. Your not an expert at anything, your just an asshole who thinks he's smarter than everybody because he "knows" whats best for the country. A draft is the last thing we need right now, just look at the approval polls for bush and the congress. People would get pissed. Now, stop posting random pro Mccain comments on videos.

  • McCain is an old, war-loving fool who appeals to simpletons, red necks, crap-kickers, blue collar dolts and other vermin infesting America. He's got nothing to say and no solutions, just more flagwaving Patton-style bullshit that appeals to the above-mentioned vermin infecting America.

  • A FREAKING MEN MAN

  • dude your such a right-wing hillbilly inbred retard I don't even know what to say outher than is that a joke made by an Obama supporter, either that or you are the biggestasshole i've everseen

    JohnMcCain4Prez08-idiot

I'm Mat Keri and I approved this message

  • I was six or seven myself,a vicarious beatle fan through my older sis. but the magic of that ricky 12 just blows my mind. I must have one. he's not that great a guitarist but it doesn't matter, crosby is EXTREMEly gifted motherfucker

  • Man, you gotta love the harmonizing, so cool and SO haunting, gives ya GOOSEBUMPS.
