got a 6 watt black box from orion that transmits around 5 miles on each direction with a 1/4 wave antenna at 30 ft hig cheap sistem for $229 all included power suply antenna coaxial
you dont !! i have the same rig (smart kit) & its terrible for drifting until its warm . anybody wanting info about this rig google quasar electronics. they dont sell to the uk now though
I had constructed that kit during the 80s decade. Smart kit is keeping the same schematics to many of it's kits. The oscillator is stable in general, and you won't have a frequency drift or "rolling" if the power transistors are being cooled good with their heatsinks. I had changed the sound input circuit, and I had put up a varicap diode. It was giving me better sound quality. I remember this kit was also good enough for a stereo generator if you wanted to add one, and the output was enough

ill bet with this setup you probably get out close to 2 miles or so, long as the antenna is high, it can probably reach over 2 miles!
