  • wow i can ice-skate well( just started working on axel) but i can NOT rollarskate/rollarblade i tried both, and was going like .2 miles and hour and only going straight. Not to mention you cant stop the same way, which i fond out the hard way...

  • dearestrodeo, the reason that ice skaters don't do true 1 1/2 jumps is because there's no need. On that skate format, its too easy to cheat a double and have it be called clean.

    Cheers, happy skating!

  • dearestrodeo, I doubt the "many" in your comment about boekels ( wait why didn't us you use the confusing ice term "inside axel"?, as an axel jumped off an inside edge would be a different jump. ). I've never seen a boekel done on ice, nor toe walley's ( definitely not by TV ice skaters ). Please post a video clip.

  • No, it's not "just like a half-loop", its a eular if you're on roller skates (case closed). But, if a eular is called a "half-loop" on ice, then what do you call a half rotation loop jump on ice? I've seen plenty of people at the local ice rink do them ( and they are dang ugly on that skate format, IMHO )

  • Would now not be a good time to say that I'm an artistic roller skater (not a very good one, I'll give you that) but my club and therefore I call them toeloops and halfloops? I'd no idea that they were called mapes or eulers in my sport...

  • Oh my! Why would you call them toe loops and halfloops? That makes no sense when your on rollers.

  • I am glad you started the discussion. Thanks for the compliment also. I hope to load some more videos at some point, when I have a few minutes. :)

  • This video/discussion has inspired me to post a video of my axel at regionals in 2001. Its by far not my best axel, but I was always better in practice than at competitions.

  • I just watched it again, and that last heel camel just goes and goes in perfect position, without the wheels changing over into an inside circle like some heel camels do ( it started to,but you corrected it quickly ). Very nice. Was that the end of the program? The clip kind of just ends.

  • yes, it was the end of the program...this is the ONLY version i have of the short at that nationals, and it jumps to scores right after. i was tied for first after this program, and i grabbed first after the long.

  • wow!!! i can't believe my vid has stirred up this much discussion. this is a good thing!

yes, this was my short from 98. dbl flip, combo was axel loop dbl loop euler dbl flip, single axel, heel broken ankle invert, heel by itself.

yes, the loop was 'winged' (wish i could change that part of the skate that day, but oh well..) jumps were never my strong suit..but spins...loved them and miss doing them.

thanks for the comments...love the discussion. :)

  • Don't get me wrong, that jump combo is very nice, but I'd have to give you 99 out of 100 because of the 2loop. But like I said, actually seeing your landing foot on the flip might change this somewhat. The jumps in your clip are strong. I love your spins too. Thanks for posting your clip, I miss roller skating and it's sad to see it in decline.

  • the flip was solid. my flip/lutz was good like that for years. the loop gave me issues. lol

yes, i agree, i wish it hasn't slipped as much as it has. i miss those days.

  • I wish I could have been skating in those days, I've only been skating competitive 3 years, but my family has been competing for decades. I'm the same here with my flip/lutz, I call it my all-star jump - but the loop, not so much...

  • I competed back in the late 70s/early 80s, again in the early 90s, and again in 2001 ( as an old man, LOL ). Back when I quit the first time I was just starting to get a decent double loop, my double flip/lutz was pretty solid. Back then you needed a good double loop to place at regionals in sophmore, I never placed at regionals back then, but did in the early 90's. In 2001, there were only 2 people at nationals in my event. Sad. But I can say I'm a national champion (in singles), LOL.

  • Hmm, I've never seen an ice skater to a college, or a boekel, or a toe walley, or 1 1/2 rotation jumps landed on an IF edge, or a true ( ie butt below the knee ) sit spin LOL. I hate watching ice skaters to their butt just a few inches lower "sit" spin. How funny.

  • Her double loop in that combo is slightly cheated on the landing. It's still pretty good though. But it'd give it less credit than one that's truely clean. I wish you could see her landing foot when she lands the flip. If it was really solid it could make up for it some of it.

  • I should add, the reason why this slightly cheating matters is because on roller skates, it significantly easier to land a jump cheated on the landing because there's fricton in the front-back direction. But she did look like she was over her skate and not using this as an aid to land the jump.

  • It's a euler on rollers not half loop. Just like it's a mapes not toe loop. The mechanics of a correct loop ( and euler) on roller skates is different than on roller skates it's incorrect to jump off the toe stop on either jump. Thus, the jump didn't come from ice.

  • In roller skating it can't. A half loop would be a half rotation jump.

  • Ya, most of our jumps did, but we have our own too =)

  • A euler is a forward take-off, not a backwards like the loop. Same idea though.

  • No a euler isn't a forward take off. It's take off is just like a loop, but it's landed on the other foot.

  • It's not a half loop it's a euler.
