@tubertomp No, the term for a member is a mason or freemason. The freeman bit you're thinking of is derived from the feudal era when serfs were not free to move or join organisations like guilds, as part of the requirements for joining you must be a "just, upright and free man." So the insinuation you make is false, you have to be free to join. It's still relevant as those who are serving or have served a custodial sentence aren't eligible no longer being free men.
