@MsJanetWood That's nothing compared to the amount that DC schools spend on failing schools, student's who are falling behind, and the payment to inadequate teachers.
The UNIONs have bankrupt our economy, and now the teachers UNION have bankrupt our kids education. OBAMA does not want school choice or vouchers, because it will undermine the UNIONs cash cow of corruption. OBAMA is a UNION whore. OBAMA does not give a fuck about our kids - OBAMA just like the UNIONs only care about their wallets.
having to wait for a lottery number to decide the quality of my future education makes me wanna puke. quality education should be right, not a privilege. I am willing to pay higher taxes for the following institutions
1. Universal Health Care
2. Free quality Education(up to college)
3. Housing and Nutrition aid for kids under 18
this is ridiculous, imagine how much we can provide with 1.4 trillion dollars that we already spend on US military in 2011, roughly 20% of our entire annual budget
There are no good charter high schools in Broward County, Florida. One exists in Pembroke Pines, Florida. The problem is that it is very hard to get in, random selection, mainly for Pembroke Pines residents, which we are not! As far as vouchers, quality private high schools are very expensive, $10-$20K/year! Who will pay for my son?!...businesses, tax payers....hmm
I am surprised that Michelle Rhee would put so much blame and pressure on that teachers when everybody know what the problem is. The problem is these god forsaken parents in these god forsaken communities who blame the schools when their children don't do well. Michelle, being Asian, I thought you would realize that parents are the reason why most Asian students do so well in school, not the teachers.
@ktl2828 If it's the parents and the communities then why is it that at the Harlem Success Academy where every nearby school is terrible, the kids in the HSA actually perform well even compared to rich private schools? It's not the parents or the community, it's the unions, the education politics, and yes, a small percentage of horrible teachers. Every profession has bad apples, but it's amazing how good teachers will rally around their garbage.
@ktl2828 you are ignorant. Do you realize that neighborhood schools are funded by property tax? That means poor children go to poor, failing, understaffed, overpopulated schools with lack of resources. Its not teachers fault, but they often add to the problem.
@mpardueable When people say your ignorant that usually means that you are correct. Asian immigrants are also poor, but their children seem to do pretty well in school. So do immigrant children from Eastern European countries. See when you actually deal with the problems in you neighborhoods and stop blaming somebody else, then maybe you will succeed.
@mpardueable Neighborhood schools are also funded by No Child Left Behind, which is a matching program. Kids in wealthy neighborhoods get more federal dollars because more local money is already spent on them, and kids in poor neighborhoods get fewer federal dollar because less local money is spent on them.
black culture is the true problem. black kids should not have to have it imposed on them to work hard, not steal and not be a menace to society. this should be built into their culture and come from their parents. black culture glorifies a lack of education, violence, promiscuity, etc. and that's the REAL problem that no one is talking about
Teacher "X" teaches 5 classes. He teaches 3 Algebra classes, 1 Advanced Algebra class, and 1 remedial class. His first four classes are okay, but his last class is utter chaos!
Why?
Is it because the class has 43 students instead of 35?
Or maybe because the majority of the students don't speak English?
Could it be that it's late in the day and the kids are tired?
Or maybe, just maybe, the kids are DOWN-RIGHT LAZY?
Stop blaming the hard-working, dedicated teachers!
Public schools are run for TEACHERS and UNIONS. The students are just a distraction from the main mission of getting more power.

Michelle Rhee's rash decisions cost DC schools $7.5 million dollars!

@MsJanetWood, it would have been better if her decisions bankrupted public schools altogether. Worked well for New Orleans Schools:

Why hasn't anyone interviewed Michelle Rhee's former students? Ask them what kind of teacher she was?

According to an article published by the Washington Post on July 10, 2010: "D.C. elementary test scores show decline"
STUDENT TEST SCORES went DOWN!
The "bad teachers" she fired were mostly older, black women who had a vested interest int he community.
She replaced them with young, "hip" white kids with NO TEACHING EXPERIENCE and who were TEMPORARILY slumming it down in the ghetto!
She CREATED A MESS and now she just wants to SIMPLY WALK AWAY!
Why doesn't she STAY and FACE THE MUS
