I have read some of the comments on here, while a good deal are just people sounding off, and others are just foolishness, I have yet to see one person who seems to really understand whats going on.
The "war on drugs" started with Nixon..for decades now we have waged this so called "war". We spend more and more each year and yet we still have people using drugs.
There is a saying in the addiction community, when you repeat the same behavior but expect different results, its called insanity.

The whole "war on drugs" is total BS. Why is the government in the business of protecting adults from themselves? It's not like making them illegal is stopping anybody from attaining or using them either. Fact: Kids can get drugs a hell of a lot easier than alcohol.

The reason our government continues this dumb charade and failed policy is because of the special interest lobby. What kind of budget cuts do you think the DEA, FBI, State and Federal correctional Institutions, etc. would see if they no longer could arrest/incarcerate people for drugs? Also, besides terrorism, what better excuse do we have to stick our noses in other countries affairs?

If folks who REALLY needed money, like farmers in Colombia, had to do things like sell coke, they could sell it on the open market to much better consumers and buyers instead of the drug being totally illegal and having to get protection and help from dangerous groups like FARC! If they were able to find a HUGE amount of money in that stash, they should either use it to be able to significantly cut taxes or give every law-abiding citizen a good amount of it. Remember, gov't is supposed to answer to US. Just b/c they found a bunch of money inexplicably acquired through illegal means doesn't mean they have the right to just keep it for themselves without taking any further action. These are not tax dollars or user fees or anything of the sort.

personally, i'd like to see it fund research on drug addictions and treatment outcomes, which is the kind of bedrock research we need in order to inform good public health policy if certain other drugs are eventually decriminalized. other people probably want more bombs and churches
