Anyways, yes, this game was awesom and well before its time. The only thing that sucked is when you were defeated you lost your monster for good. aLL THAT WORK DOWN THE SHITTER!
I assume you're using an emulator for this game? How did you get it to work? I downloaded every version I could find. It keeps freezing up on the "EA" (electronic Arts) screen. I can't play it at all & really want to, since it has been like 20trs since I last played it. Did you do something special to get it to work? I am using the VICE emulator v2.2 & v2.1 btw,
@Anyone00TZ Thanks. Actually, it works on CCS64. I think the problem has something to do with "fastloader" on the C64? Can't run Ferrari F1 Challange or Caveman Ughlympics either, but they work on CCS64. BTW, do you know offhand where to get an older copy of VICE? Preferably 1.21-1.22. I need it for Gamebase64. All I could find was a "build" version of 1.21 & 2. If you know offhand, it would be appreciated, if not, I will look around. BTW, ever use Gamebase64? Thx again!
I used to spend hours and hours playing this back in the 80s... the music brings back a lot of feelings of nostalgia.....well.....excluding the horrendous load times.
A remake would be awesome as long as they kept to the spirit of the original game (just fight and build strength and fight some more), and didn't try to give it a plot/storyline or turn it into a pokemon clone.
One of my all time favorite of the C64/Atari800 games. Even by that time I was only 8 and had a very short attention span, I clearly remember playing for hours building up my Brontozaur... Ireally would like for a very very close remake with 3d graphics. Man imagine the Dinos... gahhh... ^^
The guys who made it went on to make (among other things) the Star Control series. Toys for Bob is now CEO'd by one of the main programmers of this game.
We bought a shoebox full of games when I was in early elementary school. This game was in it, and I loved it so much! It got messed up somehow though, so I never got to play it. These videos bring the whole atmosphere back.
Thank you so much for posting...man did I love this game before I got a Nintendo! Hearing that "nee nee nee nee nee nee nee!" death song really brings me back. I gotta finish my walkthrough for this game oneday,...as last I checked there was only one which was *really* bad and didn't do the game proper justice. Still have the original disk somewhere...lol. ;)
I loved this game as a kid, I played it with a c64 emulator. This, Archon and the Ultima series were totally totally awesome. Even today it's pretty awesome. I really should download it again.
brings back fond memories of C64...call me crazy....but this game would great if they brought it back with todays technology keeping the simplistic form of battle...i mean with the advent of online...it would be great to build up a character for battle!
Finally, someone posted a video on M.O.M. I loved this game along with the Archon series. I would play this game over and over. I remember flipping my disk from front to back because I had to save my character or using a seperate disk. Man, this game rocks and it brings back memories.
This game was before its time. Imagine what it would have been like with today's graphics and internet play. Sometimes I think that revisiting old titles like this and bringing them up to 21st century specs while remaining true to the original gameplay should be what some independent developer should attempt.
Yes and no. I don't want to see a remake of Neverending Story, or Goonies. Some things belong to my childhood. Besides, there are a thousand great game designers out there with lots of great ideas that could use a publisher. No reason they can't do something inspired by this though.
Thank you very much for posting this. Between this game, archon, and Starcon, Paul Reich is responsible for much ill spent time, but well remembered childhood moments!
Joe Negron LOVES this game!

@gjc82071 I used WinVICE 1.22; the disk swapping is a pain though.

I had this on my Atari, looks like it was pretty much the same game. This was ahead of its time as far as concept goes. Love the opening theme.

No This first, if it was anything, Spore would be a ripoff of this.

Thanks for posting this -- Mail Order Monster vids are FAR too rare. Heck, I'll probably have to resort to making some of my own one of these days.

Anyone share that feeling?

i agree with u

Yeah, let's face it -- games like this were predecessors to things like Pokemon and the upcoming Monster Lab on the Nintendo DS.
Mail Order Monsters was AWESOME.
