I'm french and I like this song, I'm not nazi or something else. Just the joy when I listen I see munchen, the forest, the german mum with the apfelstrudel lol. And i dont see the soldier !
Soldiers have sung (and died) all over the world, and why shouldn't they sing! Music is a uninversal language! It is perhaps that the Germans had better soldiers marching songs, and therefore others got envious! I was a soldier and we sang loud and often! and I would sing it all again!
This song has nothing to do with war only with courage and survive. Think about what you want to do in a critical situation as our parents and grandparents were.
All german songs sung by german army are views in France as nazi songs. Poeple don't know these songs wasn't created during ww2 and aren't political. I think Germany has the best military songs and march in Europe.
@julien0540 I fully agree with you. Let's forget about politics, and let's just listen to the wonderful, inspiring music of German military songs! Greetings from Catalonia.
In France, this song is almost entirely viewed as the symbol of the German oppression. Which is totally stupid, it has been written in 1830 and his lyrics have NOTHING to do with politic or war. It is just an old song (already old during WW2) which was popular among German soldiers.
yes, you are right. When i was young ,7,8 years old, it was almost forbiden to sing this song , around 1967.Althought this song has nothing to do with rassism, war , just a drinking song. but for the people who have known this time , 1940, they can not dissociate this song with war time.

ww2 is not what matters here, what matters is that this is an incredibly great marching and party song!

That just shows how ignorant people can be, turning your back on anything like this is a bad and/or stupid idea.
This isn't the only thing I've seen them do, French people were bloody tortured for giving a crumb of bread to a German soldier back then.
