I, a non-Christian, believe that the"Upper Room" draws upon each person's reach for something higher than the explanation we are given for our existence. There are surely infinite connections implicit in the moment of our miracle, and no one can tell us how we should live the only life that is given us. In this quantum reality we are both mortal and immortal, sinner and saint, lover and loved, and no God or King or Shaman has control over our destiny.
@mikes230 I grew up steeped in the faith, and treasure the Jesus story. But I'm afraid it seems that the modern folk who most espouse their Christianity are often the ones who rally to war, the death penalty, and vitriol. I think the Jesus man would have little in common with modern religion in America, preferring again the common folk to the megachurches and crystal cathedrals. Faith is a thing best worn in private. Thank you, and best wishes to you.
I remember this song my mama used to play her album all the time i guess i was about 7 yrs old but u never get tired of hearing good old fashion music just love it
@carterwjeff, I totaly disagree with that statement having sudied history exyensively the African slaves did not have any knowledge of God, for they had many gods . The slaves wre introduced to God durning the Awakings,,and strong revivivual meetings, and I am not at all convinced that they all embrace it. because we seem to need God in the past, but what about now?
@damdra I think i may see your point if I precieve you right then you are correct can't fight with you on that . I did not comewith percentages but if 5% was included in the frist place then you win.
@damdra I think that I get your point. You are correct if 5% was not included in the frist place. I have to say true. I did not know the percent that is hard to figure.
I grew up listening to Mahalia, being a white child in the 60's that I suppose was unusual. My mom used to say if one was an "unbeliever", they needed to listen to Mahalia sing, because after listening to Mahalia sing if they didn't become a believer after that, there was no hope for that person!! I think Momma's right!
@malisoucy my sister thank you for letting the world know , when it's was so racist back in the 60's , it was OK to listen to Mahalia no matter what color you were. Mahalia's voice was from God. Everytime I play this song , I know God is Pattening his feet. GODBLESS !
@msprettyass22 GOD BLESS YOU, Ms. Pretty! My momma brought us up the way she & my daddy were brought up!! Momma loved listenin' to what she called "real" Gospel music! For her & Daddy growing up in the 30's & 40's in TN, and brought up right, and bringing up 5 of us kids right, was no easy job, I suppose, but I'm thankful for it. Racism is something I cannot understand, and do not tolerate, never have, never will. Mahalia still keeps me going & other "real" Gospel music!! Bless you, Sister!
When i hear you singing upper room with Jesus. I feel i can see all my family members who gone on before me sitting there with you in the upper room!!.
This was one of my mom's favorite gospel songs...my mom passed away 5-21-2011, 4 days after her 62nd birthday. I dedicated this song in my mom"s memory to those who have, did have or passed away from cancer. RIP Mom, I love and miss you.
@lilacrose08 My mother passed away 2-17-2011. Mahalia was her favorite gospel singer and listening to this brings back good memories. You will always have those good memories of your mother to help you through the sad days. I know I do.
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I first heard this song close to 50 years ago, being played on an old jukebox from a black storre in a Texas town. It moved me then, and it moves me now. This lady truly had a blessed voice, and she used it to serve Jesus.
@DeenTyler HAHAHA!! ME TOO!! I never heard the real version. Only heard them messing around with this song in the movie "Life" with those crazy fools!! Sis. Jackson, God Bless her forever and ever!. I know in my heart she is with the KING still singing!

Mahalia.. Thank god for your recordings.... I am trying to find more salve time black music and am unsure what to search for... Does anyone else know a keyword for slave black music?
@carterwjeff: primitive gospel, old church, primitive baptist. The reason the African slaves loved the gospel was because it taught that all were free, that regardless of being a slave, that you were loved by God. Pretty heavy stuff, considering the people that taught their slaves about Jesus were the same ones who held them as slaves. That's why they saw Old Testament Stories of Hebrew slaves meant so much to them. Mahalia was the Best. Check out the Staples Family Singers sometime.

@verbaud I still have my great grandfather's emancipation papers from slavery. Your insight is so right on. And I hope you don't bother engaging in some of the nonsense here. What you've written needs no explanation.
@twigbass How did they know about God voodoo was their god and they had many gods. they was taught by the the crusaders for christ they came from across the water to seek religiious freedom . What is your proof ?
Yes I agree, and she was so generous. She was giving from this great power to other people during her whole life and still is. I am very grateful for it.

she was the best of the best wish i could of seen her face to face! she was a real child of GOD i love her music she was my g~mother's fav ta~ta till next time friens
As an Abrahamic atheist, I obviously don't attribute any divine or supernatural power to Miss Mahalia's voice. But it's the closest thing to an otherworldly force I've ever experienced. Her 'Amazing Grace' makes me well with tears when sober, and flat out sob like a baby when drunk.
@ordordo You can be a man of faith. Just study the word. Attend bible study and church and your faith will grow. U can have just as much faith has her
@ordordo IT IS WRITTEN: For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9To another FAITH by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
When I hear Mahalia Jackson's voice , I really feel the spirit of The Lord. Song's like this remind me of my people and how we have always stood on the promises of God.
@FHARRISJR55 My mother loves Mahalia Jackson and sounds just like her. Type in Mahalia Jackson by Marie Guillian. U will be blessed. Comment and tell me what u think.
When I was 8, I was first introduced to Mahalia Jackson. I used to think she was the women who sang the lead to the TV theme for The Jeffersons. I also thought she was the one who played Louise. But I was wrong, because The Jeffersons was aired in 1975, and Mahalia Jackson passed away in 1972.
One of few times in my life I agreed with my older (and bossier) sister was when she brought a LP of Mahalia home for us to enjoy. We made our house a house of praise playing that record at full blast :-)
I love this.. A true blessing to the body of Christ they just don't sing like this anymore. Songs to lead you to the water and make you want to drink. Pastors have to start leading the people to Chirst and not their own agenda's. I'm tired of church as usual I want to experience Jesus EVERYTIME I'm in the Sanctuary that begins with Praise and Worship..
But every time I hear "Upper Room" I think of Martin Lawrence when he was talking about the "Upper Room" on his show..lol
I found Mahalia Jackson's CD in a library once and I was hooked. The Holy Spirit just radiates from her. This is my favorite song she sings because this is what I see in a vision, me and my Lord Jesus sitting together, me and Him talking. Such a special moment. I pray I get to sit with Him in heaven like that.
I grew up listening to Mahalia Jackson. My Mother knew her music...I am 50 years old and I still listen to Mahalia...The only gospel singer whom I can really connect with. I NEED to be in the Upper Room...Thank you for the music....I was so shocked to find it here...

@spaceoreo You think you are tearing up for NO reason? Its right there, you just dont see it. :)
stewwalk 1 year ago
@stewwalk No...I don't think it's for no reason. I just don't think it's because of an Abrahamic god.

Amazing. How i would like to be a man of fatih. But faith is a grace given to a few privileged people like this great woman.
ordordo 1 year ago
@ordordo You can be a man of faith. Just study the word. Attend bible study and church and your faith will grow. U can have just as much faith has her
rayjgc2010 1 year ago
@ordordo IT IS WRITTEN: For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9To another FAITH by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

When I hear her voice, I really feel the spirit of The Lord. Songs like this remind me of how black people have always stood on the promises of God.
