@ThePhoneUpdate Nice :) Since my poor old Compaq died long ago, I now have a Toshiba Portege 320CT, a cool little Pentium 266 subnotebook. It too has an OPL3, great fun. It has a little docking station with the CDROM drive and extra ports!
@d0pefish Sweet, mines a full heavy laptop, with built-in CD and floppy. It has a 300MHz AMD K6-2, I think my sound is playing up a bit though, seems to miss quite a few notes when playing MIDI files :(
@OBSysteme I didn't notice any hearable difference between the emulation and our old SB 16. If the Pontiac drives as nice as the ferarri, I don't have a problem with the fact^^ (Or if the emulation sounds as great as the actual hardware)
Well, it's not that weird to have that kind of chip in that era. My Toshiba Sattelite has an OPL3 chip inside. For some reason it only works through windows, I can't get any of these DOS based OPL3 trackers to work with it. But I can sequence it's General MIDI soundset with any sequencer. But I can't program my own patches that way. However I just bought a Yamaha Tx81Z (same synthesis as OPL3) so i'm not complaining anymore.
i just freakin loved the OPL. didn't learn trackers (milkytracker is pretty confusing for a newb), but i like chiptunes too. still nothing beats FM synth. because it could be used to create real-life sounding music.
i still have a SB16 in a computer i fire up from time to time, and the AWE64 in daily use on the pc at my grandparents place.
i've used soundfonts, even the yamaha xg software MIDI synth driver. NOTHING sounds like real FM synthesis. there's something about that "cheap" sound.
kollikolli, I've got a sine an a saw. You want them? ;)
Just kidding. Samples in chiptunes are just standard soundwaves like sine, saw, square, triangle and things you draw yourself. They are normally so easy to create/generate that people don't exchange them between each other.
wow thats good. i just wish my craptop had better comadability with FreeDos to handle that program. drivers for my chipset are aperently rare or nonexistent.
after around 3 hours of diging throgh a room full of boxes I found the drivers and got the sound working, but now I'm having trouble with making insterments because the rez is so small 1/3 of the screen is cut off, making this harder than it should be. (my laptop was made in 1995) and has opl2 i think "thanks to the fatman"
cool, thats a bit weird that a laptop from that era would still have the sb16 style chip in there since its been out since 92 or so. but noneless keep rocking on .. :)
The sound chip in this laptop was an ESS Audiodrive which incorporated 100% SB16 compatibility, including the OPL3. This laptop was designed for Windows 98, and a I'd say a lot of 98 users were still using a few legacy DOS apps that banged Sound Blasters directly. I guess that was the idea. I think laptop hardware was a little behind the times too as the technology was developing.
I love it too! I have a DX100 synthesizer as well as my computers. The laptop in the video unfortunately died a while ago and I sold the spares. :( But I built myself a retro PC with a couple of old ISA Sound Blaster 16s so that I can continue to play with AdlibTracker!
This is great stuff! I wish I could also use Adlib Tracker.. I can't seem to get even EdLib tracker working properly (keyjazz refuses to work in dosbox). I would need some Adlib guru to teach me some tracker so I could produce joy in musical form too! I am green with envy!

Cool Beans I got an Audio drive in me Presario "Im sorry yo"
So I'll be trying this too.
I love this OPL3 song the best out all that I've heard.
ESS does sound cool.
maxfischer36 1 year ago
Since DOSBOX with it's nice OPL emulation there is no need of an old system or soundcard.
NoMac90 1 year ago
OPL3 is probably my most favorite form of synthesis ever. You can do so ridiculously much with it and it is so unique. <3

You should have connected the laptop straight to the sound card... Audio recorded with a mic sounds like crap :(

Sounds like Sonic the Hedgehog (1337)
ZildjianAVC 5 years ago
Yeah! :D The Sega Megadrive/Genesis also used FM synthesis for its music, and so the sounds are very similar.
In fact there's a cover of the Sonic Green Hill Zone tune in the Adlib Tracker archive! :)
