The more I explore The Four Preps, the more impressed I am with not just their incredible vocal skills as singers and arrangers but their terrific skills as live entertainers, songwiters, wits and selectors of so much first-rate material. One person I played their material for described them as "The Lettermen with a sense of humor" but then added "Actually, they were more versatile and better than The Lettermen." I must agree. The Lettermen were excellent. The Four Preps even better.
WOW!! I never heard this Four Preps song..it is absolutely great!! The Four Preps had some of the best songs from the fiftes. I'm glad I'm old enough to remember them.
Yes for the time period it was a daring song like "Wake Up Little Susie" by the Everly Brothers. But the melody and harmony of this song is so delightful that it leaves me feeling happy. There is a sense of innocence in the way it sung, much better than the graphic lyrics in music we hear today.
check out "the girl with the striped umbrella" omg jan & dean would have killed for this - Hi to Bruce Belland you sir & your band were why the 50z / 60z were the best, hugs
Thanks for the greeting and remembering "girl in the shade etc.". It's one of my favorite Preps tracks thanks, in large part, to the brilliant arrangement by the talented Perry Botkin Jr. one of the true geniuses in the record business.
It's so great that our fans are resurrecting some of these more obscure Four Preps recordings.
The Four Preps are a part of my childhood growing up. (I'm 58). I agree, song has a very delighful melody like 26 miles.I wondered if this song ran into a problem of being played on the radio station because of a topless female sunject, like the Everly brothers song "Wake little Susie " subject about a young couple overslept in a car at the drive inn.
how about 'the girl in the shade of a striped umbrella'..is that one available????? thank you

Thanks for the compliment!
We wrote this one to have some fun with the topless bathing suit craze. We were always ready to poke fun at the latest fad.
Glad you enjoyed it down under. Oz is our favorite place on earth.
All the best,

This is kind of a daring song for the time period, at least for a teen-oriented vocal group.

Actually that song is called "the girl in the shade of the striped umbrella." Shame it wasn't a big hit as it's a great song.

Hi lightningstorm1,
Bruce Belland here - lead singer of The Four Preps and co-writer of this song.
That line is, "he covered for the girl without a top
COVERED UP for the girl without a top".
Hope that clears it up for you.

After the line "he covered for the girl without a top" they say "something for the girl without a top." What do they say in that line?
