If it was going to happen to ANYBODY in those days Marshall Holman would've been everyone's wish. Look at the composed sportsmanship of PBA members prior to Holman and look at it now. PDW took over from there, and now there's Rash (aptly named). Holman was the lead punch followed by the devastating second blow which is PDW that put professional bowling on the ropes, costing the contract with ABC. Now the PBA is relegated to cable for lack of sponsorship. Thanks Marshall.
I don't know whats tougher, to swallow the fact that you double guttered or to be an audience and not laugh. I've done single gutters from time to time and it does not feel good. I feel your pain M.H.!!!
No. I do NOT enjoy seeing a top pro being shown like this. It was bad enough when it happened to him, but why do this to him now, after all these years? Regardless of some of his other antics on the lanes (for which he was fined by the PBA), there is no valid reason to put these two shots on display. Nothing is ever gained from such nonsense. As a former PBA member, I object. I hope this video will be removed from youtube!
@DeedsResearcher It's history in the PBA, whether good or bad. I personally have never seen a person pro or amateur trying to do well and throw two straight gutter balls. I certainly have never seen a pro do it. You guys are supposed to be the best bowlers in the world.
I'll bet you protest the Del Ballard gutter ball video and probably a video of Pete Weber's trophy falling to the ground and smashing.
@steelcityvoice No, but I remember Pete's trophy falling, and the look of total shock that came over his face. That was priceless, of course, in its own way. Also, it is probable that the sponsors had the trophy replaced with a new one, so Pete really didn't lose out. I'm sure his bank also accepted the check when he deposited it!
...If that - - was in the 3rd frame or beyond, Marshall's best possible score would have been only 240. I'm curious what the actual frame-by-frame game was.
@kingzmaul Actually, not so. If the ball misses the spot by 2 boards to the right (for a righty, of course), it may wind up catching too much oil and never even have a chance to hook back.
Imagine sitting in that crowd; what do you do? Clap? Look down at your feet? You couldn't help but feel embarrassed for Holman, even if he was the #2 asshole on the tour (Pete will always be #1.) What to do? I imagine the crowd that saw Del Ballard dunk the winner into the channel on the last shot felt the same way.
I do know of one other instance of a double-gutter on a PBA Tour telecast. Dale Eagle, back when he went by his birth name of Dale Glenn, did it on a telecast in 1979 against Butch Soper. That match is here on YouTube somewhere.
@jinx2162k Same thing happened to me last year. I have no idea how or why but yeah, it was incredibly embarrassing. So embarrassing that I considered not going back this year.
I don't think he was embarass nor upset at all for those gutter shots thrown. Am quite familiar with his history of his good shots thrown during crunch time and his accuracy, let us not forget his actual expression of dismay. It would take more than that to convince me, they were just bad shots.
Must have bet his career earnings on the other guy to win the match..
