The Guiness people have it wrong. "Deadliest" is a relative term. The Olive Sea Snake has venom far more toxic than the Mamba, but human deaths are very rare. The Krait of Southeast Asia kills far more people than the Mamba, with venom equally as potent. Even in Africa, it's the Russel's Viper that drops more humans each year. The Black Mamba is deadly, and dangerous, but it's not the "deadliest" by either toxicity or death-count.

If you get COMPETENT medical help reasonably soon, mamba bites are almost always survivable. How soon "soon" is depends on a lot of factors, like your weight and health, the size of the snake, EXACTLY where you are bitten and how much venom that snake decides to inject in that instance (they have control of the amount).
If a large black mamba got it's fangs directly into a vein and gave you a full load of venom, you might be dead in a few minutes. That is VERY rare. Typically, you would have from 30 minutes to a few hours to get help.
Assuming that you're referring to the North American snakes most commonly known as Green Snakes (Opheodrys), the easy way to tell is...if you're in Noth America, it's a Green Snake...if you're in Africa it's a Mamba.
If you lived near a serpentarium and wanted to be sure, probably the easiest way would be by the shape of the head. Go to you favorite image search engine and find "Opheodrys" for Green Snakes and "Dendroaspis" for mambas.
A mamba will usually be bigger, but a baby mamba is smaller than an adult green, so that's probably not useful. I guess if it's ofer 4 feet, you can assume it's not Opheodrys, but there are other harmless "green snakes" that are not native, but that you are more likely to run into than a mamba (unless you're in Africa).

the black mamba is not the most poisonou land snake. the inland taipan (fierce snake), taipan, eastern brown, saw scaled viper are all more venemous.
