I'm 23 and got diagnosed when I was 21. I been on ritalen for 2 years and switched to adderall not too long ago. I wish I knew this when I was in school I wouldn't have dropped out. I'm doing good now I own a buisness married with a daughter. I think middle school or high dchoo
Katie, doctors treat the patient not the disorder. I work in a field where the medieval practice was to do what you are saying. If you were up to date on the profession and the advances in developmental disorders you would know that treatments by organizations such as OMRDD are about fostering independence, individuality, inclusion, and productivity. Your limited understanding of the situation is no foundation for educating yourself or anybody else. All you are doing is brainwashing yourself.
What I am suggesting here is that the use of vague diagnoses and drugs cocktails to curb "behavioral" disorders is counterproductive . Over 4 million children under the age of 15 in the US are taking psychotic drugs... some of them are under the age of 3, and parents need to be educated on the side effects of these drugs and of how their treatment of their children impacts them in the long run. Check out the DSM, read it for yourself... few psychiatrists are aware of consequences.
I am an adult now with ADD and I wished my parents got help for me when I was in school. So now I have alot to catch up on because I did not get the help I need to deal with my ADD.
I am currently working on developing alternative solutions for children diagnosed with learning and behavioral disorders so that the problem does not compound into what you are currently experiencing.
k, I'm thinking YOU, are assuming everyone is doing this k, and they're not k, don't act like an elitist k, it doesn't make you look smart when you lump parents into one form k. Some adults wish they had the chance to have been put on something when they were younger. EVERYONE is diff, so you saying you did doesn't make it the way for everyone.
Parents have a responsibility of acting on the best interest of their child. ADD medication is considered highly addictive and has very intense side effects, like heart palpitations, heart attacks, stroke, anxiety, hallucinations, nausea, loss of appetite, etc... List the side effects to a child and ask if they would like to still take the medication, no influence of punishment, they will say no.
Over 4 million children in the US are taking these medications, Cate. Get real.
@katieconklin You need to look at things and see you are NOT smarter than everyone in the world! I'm NOT saying kids need to go on them and I'm NOT saying that every child that is hyper needs it. Those side effects are not what everyone is going to feel. If the case were that every meds side effects happened then I'm sure a lot more people you know would have already died. Stop acting like you know everything because somethings have more than one side.
The information I am sharing here is not contrived, it is information readily available on the internet, information compiled by experts who actually have done research on this.
Example of the side effects of drugs:
Columbine Shooters- taking Luvox (antidepressant)
Thurston High Shooter - Prozac
Heritage High Shooter - Ritalin
Heath High Shooter - Ritalin
Benjamin Bratt- 13yrs old committed suicide- Paxil
The Point here is that how do you know what effect the drugs could have on you until one day you may go and get a gun and blow someones head off?
The psychiatrists don't do any SCIENTIFIC tests for the CHEMICAL drugs they are giving people... and parents don't question the doctors because they feel as though the doctors "know better".
Alternative therapy and placebos have been proven to be equally as effective for people diagnosed with "mental disorders", so there is no excuse to use drugs.
@katieconklin And what I am saying is that yes it not for everyone and diet environment etc, can play a huge roll if changed, but you can not cut it out for everyone! There is a very short list compared of people who died compared to the ones that it has helped. I am one...I would not be here today if it was not for those drugs you speak of.
@katieconklin You are talking in terms of one way, black and white...people like you are acting like the ones who choose to give or take them are wrong. It's a choice and it saves people from suicide...I don't want to talk about this anymore. I am one of people that it saved first hand and you are saying that it was wrong.
ADHD is a neurochemical imbalance or neurochemical deficiency. If it is merely about conforming to the bell curve, and they are medication, then I see your point. That would be a misdiagnosis. However, ADHD is a very real issue, and different people, children and adults are more impaired than others. Meds do not cure it, or make it better, they merely manage symptoms to potentially live a more productive life.
ADHD is the outflow of children not being confident and properly educated.
Look at it like this: If you believe you can't do something... then most likely, when you try to do it, you will get anxious and bored.
If children are given equal opportunity to learn to read effectively by solidifying a vocabulary foundation, they will build confidence within language and communication and thus will not be bored when learning in class... because they will enjoy learning information
@katieconklin Scientific reseach and peer reviewed medical journals and neuroscience does not support your assertion. Science and research has documented the neurochemical deficiencies in diadnosed subjects. These are double blind placebo controlled tests. Please research medical journals on this subject, and learn more before making up your mind. Review science daily . com or google scholar. There is an abundant amount of research avail that discredits your claim.
All this research has shown is that there is a correlation between neurochemical deficiencies and the symptoms of ADHD, but there is no proof that these deficiencies CAUSE ADHD. You have said yourself that meds do not actually cure the problem, and what I am presenting here is a solution to the learning disability we all have, which I have proven for myself.
btw im an an artist now so i guess i prove my self right lol only a few ADHA people cant hold on to there gift u just need to learn how to controll it i think its not an illness but its the school bored & society that psychologically force you to think it your ill!!!! maybe if you thought a little less and started to feel, ur relise that some kids can see things you cant WOW its that simply lol yes like you said katie kids are born then programed...
ive got adhd myself, i was kicked out out 5 different mainstream schools and then finally went to boreding school for 2yrs, i cant keep still, my brains spins to fast, im out of control, thats what they said yeah i did do some crime and never been the perfect person, but as ive grown ive come to relise that its the system that i live in witch i find so BORING,&ROBOTIC LIKE! is the reason why ADHD gifted, express the way we do, imagination is life
Very good Video. I have had these thoughts all my life. People have always been of the position that they can't "handle" me. I am too intense or too serious. But when they need something that only genius can do then they can all of a sudden "handle" me. I think humans suck. i'll be glad when I die.
my 3rd grade teacher recommended that i get tested for add because "i could not follow directions" my mom took me to get my iq tested and for learning disorders and my iq turned out to be near genius? wtf these teachers really do know best!
I know someone that was given this kind of meds because of a teacher's suggestion when he was about 8 - he's nearly 30 and he's addicted to weed because he became dependent on something to 'be calm' because then he believed himself to have this ADD/ADHD. I once told him that his parents had simply drugged him and that he was following that - no change has been made by his own will. This is how parents fuckup a child by following 'authority advices' without fully understanding what they're doing
The way we act towards their children is just sick. Look at me my child I'm already a program robot and this is how I behave, so you must do what i did to survive in the system that was created from our acceptance and allowance in the first place! Beautiful!!
