This classic song could've easily fit on Phil's "Face Value" album but i'm glad that he saved it for Genesis instead. Along with "Turn it On Again" it introduced the band to a whole new generation of fans (myself included).
This is genius! Collins has the voice of a god! This is the perfect example of great pop music. There are great melodies and song structures here. These days, too many artists rely on one hooks per song and cheesy rap sections.
@pinkfloydrule27 But Pink Floyd do rule, notice on LastFM service, a severe lack of the bands music, and I am miffed! They have solo cuts mostly and some Dub versions which suck!
@pinkfloydrule27 I believe there's no animosity there, seeing Phil live, he's a true fan of the standard early rock era and gets his style from those that founded Rock singing and drumming
I thought Mike played all of the guitar parts that were post-Hackett in concert and Daryl played all of the old stuff? I saw them on their reunion tour a couple of years ago and that's how it was. Come to think of it, though, they didn't play Misunderstanding in concert which really pissed me off. But I though Mike wrote the guitar on this and everything from Duke on?
@jrock2264 Mike would record all the guitar and bass parts in the studio, but live he generally took his usual role as bass player, with Daryl taking the lead guitar parts. Even back in the "classic" days, Mike would occasionally play 12 & 6 string guitar live, depending on the needs of the track.
I'am sure I knew this album of Genesis named Duke in the year of 1982, when I was almost absolutely crazy. I was then in the fifth class of the theoretical mathematician course at Eötvös Loránd University of Natural Sience.
This was my favourite album, almost better than Supertramp Concert in Paris.
@Chime64 Not releases to Video (Beta and VHS formats) or LaserDisc can yet be found on DVD, and it helps keep a market alive for LD fans at least, and LD can be found but the media is more of a challenge actually! As you can guess. I own more then one LD and am selling spare hardware on CraigsList
@JAB5625 Phil or Genesis, this is a GREAT SONG, and what a GREAT performance!!!! Absolutely fantastic!
If Banks and Rutherford decided to record it, it is because it's a worthwhile song to be called GENESIS song. If Peter Gabriel Still were in the band, they would go pop anyway, and they could even record this song. Wonder if Gabriel would sing this song
well, the song reached 2# on the american pop charts on its release and was played at the iconic woodstock festival. Rolling Stone ranked it #247 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Thats because the one on the album was recorded the night before at the Savoy Theatre (November 28, 1981) which was the only recording from that show that was put on the album.
The band have admitted that the main rhythm structure of this song came from Toto's "Hold the line" and The Beach Boys' "Sail on sailor"

no, phil collins admits he took 'inspiration' from the sly stone song, and also another song. the similarities are uncanny.

well, the song reached 2# on the american pop charts on its release and was played at the iconic woodstock festival. Rolling Stone ranked it #247 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

yes i agree but it does demonstrate the prominance.

Anyway, if we consider that a song like "Beat It" from Michael Jackson is ranked 337 from 500, 247 for a less known song is not too bad.
