Amazing film. It's so like both Ashby's work and Bill Gunn's (including his unreleased first film "Stop") that I can't tell where one of them stops as director and the other begins as screenwriter. No DVD release yet either?

@bsjt: "The Landlord" is on DVD, but you have to order it online, because it's one of those cheap OnDemand DVD from MGM. Criterion Collection might put out a better version.

I saw this movie when I was 17 in SF when it first came out. I thought it was far out! In 78 I moved to Brooklyn and lived there 13 years. Park Slope was pretty upscale by then.

What a shame. One of the countries best directors! A lotta the best actors: Lee Grant, Beau Bridges, Dianna Sands, Lou Gossett, Jr., Pear Bailey, Susan Anspach, and they just weren't ready for a film about a white guy and a black woman. They shoulda been ashamed!!!
